Chapter 5 - The Walls Closing In

Z

Three weeks after Brandon’s dramatic removal from Vance Logistics, the San Diego summer heat set in, bringing scorching afternoons and relentless blue skies. But inside the old Vance family estate in La Jolla, the atmosphere felt like an arctic freezer.

Without the financial backing of Vance Logistics, the high-end lifestyle Victoria and Brandon had enjoyed for decades began to unravel at staggering speed. The main bank accounts linked to the family trust had been frozen by a federal judge following the initiation of the SEC's formal fraud investigation. The fleet of luxury vehicles had been repossessed, and the servants had all quit after their paychecks bounced.

I sat in my lawyer's office, reviewing the latest developments on a large digital monitor mounted on the wall.

"The federal grand jury was convened yesterday morning," Laura informed me, taking a sip of her coffee. "They are reviewing charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, tax evasion, and conspiracy against both Brandon and Victoria."

"What about the custody case?" I asked, my main concern remaining steadfastly focused on Liam.

"The family court judge reviewed the forensic evidence regarding the forged Swiss passport documents," Laura replied with a subtle smile. "The judge issued a permanent restraining order against Victoria Vance, prohibiting her from coming within five hundred feet of Liam. Brandon’s visitation rights have been reduced to two hours a week, strictly monitored inside a state-mandated child protection facility."

A heavy sigh of relief escaped my lips. For the first time in months, the terrifying weight sitting on my chest began to lift. Liam was safe. The legal machinery they had designed to steal him away had been completely dismantled and turned against them.

Suddenly, my phone rang. It was an unrecognized number with a local area code. I hesitated for a moment before pressing the speaker button.

"Nora?"

It was Brandon's voice. But it sounded nothing like the confident, polished executive I had married. His voice was raspy, hollow, and slurred, as if he hadn't slept or shaved in days.

"Brandon, you are not supposed to be calling this number directly," I said sternly, my finger hovering over the end-call button. "All communications are required to go through our respective legal councils."

"Nora, please! Don't hang up!" he begged, his tone bordering on hysterical. "Please... just give me five minutes. That’s all I'm asking for. Just five minutes."

Laura gave me a cautious look, shaking her head, but I raised my hand to stop her.

"What do you want, Brandon?" I asked coldly.

"My mother had a minor stroke last night," Brandon choked out, sounding on the verge of tears. "The bank served us with a formal notice of foreclosure on the La Jolla house this morning. We have thirty days to vacate the property. She can't handle this, Nora... she’s seventy-two years old."

"Victoria brought this upon herself, Brandon," I reminded him without a trace of sympathy. "She was the one who drafted the legal strategy to separate a mother from her infant child. She was the one who managed the shell accounts."

"I know! I know she was wrong!" Brandon cried out through the speaker. "I was wrong! I was blind, arrogant, and stupid! I let my mother's ambition and my own greed ruin the best thing that ever happened to me! But please, Nora... don't take Liam away from me completely. Don't let them put me in prison."

"I am not the United States Attorney, Brandon," I said flatly. "I didn't file the criminal charges against you. The federal government did, because you committed severe financial crimes."

"If you drop the civil suits, if Apex Global agrees to a financial settlement, the federal prosecutors will downgrade the charges!" Brandon pleaded desperately. "I’ll give up all claims to any marital assets! I’ll sign a complete waiver! I’ll do whatever you want! Just tell your lawyers to stop!"

I closed my eyes for a brief moment, remembering the terrifying feeling of waking up from my C-section, paralyzed by anesthesia, listening to this same man cold-bloodedly plan my emotional destruction behind a hospital door. I remembered the sheer cruelty in his voice when he said, What is she going to fight with? Her parents are dead.

When I opened my eyes, my heart was completely cold.

"Do you remember what you said to Chloe outside my hospital room three hours after Liam was born, Brandon?" I asked, my voice echoing quietly through the silent office.

There was a long, panicked pause on the line. "Nora... I was just talking nonsense... I didn't mean—"

"You said, 'I will give her a reasonable amount of money to walk away, and that will be the end of it,'" I quoted him word for word. "You thought you could put a price tag on a mother's love for her child. You thought my grief and isolation made me weak."

"Nora, please..." he sobbed.

"You reap what you sow, Brandon," I said softly. "You built a pit of deceit and cruelty, expecting me to fall into it. I am not going to throw you a rope now that you're the one trapped at the bottom."

"Nora! No! Don't do this! Nora—!"

I hung up the phone, ending the call permanently.

I looked over at Laura, who gave me an approving, respectful nod. "We're filing the final motion for full legal and physical custody tomorrow morning at eight AM."

"Good," I said, standing up and picking up my handbag. "Let's finish this."
