Zero nine

Chapter 4 - The Emergency Boardroom Battle

Z

The headquarters of Vance Logistics occupied the top three floors of a sleek skyscraper in San Diego’s financial district. Normally, the glass doors opened to an atmosphere of quiet efficiency, where high-salaried executives managed supply chains across three continents.

On Thursday morning at nine o'clock, however, the main lobby was in utter chaos.

Journalists from regional financial publications were gathered outside the glass barriers, flashing cameras every time a senior executive walked through the turnstiles. Rumors of an emergency board meeting had leaked to the press late the previous evening, causing Vance Logistics stock to drop fifteen percent before the opening bell even rang.

I stepped out of the private elevator accompanied by Howard, Laura, and two senior auditors from Apex Global. I was dressed in a sharp, dark navy suit, my hair pulled back tightly, carrying myself with an undeniable aura of absolute authority. Gone was the timid wife who wore oversized sweaters and spoke in quiet, deferential tones.

As we approached the main boardroom doors, Brandon’s personal secretary tried to step in our path, looking panicked. "Mrs. Vance, I'm sorry, but this is an internal board meeting! Non-board members are not permitted—"

Howard stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal documents directly onto her desk. "Nora Salgado holds fifty-two percent of the voting power of Apex Global, which currently owns forty percent of Vance Logistics' preferred stock and holds absolute foreclosure rights on your primary operating credit line. Step aside."

The secretary froze, looking at the legal authority stamped on the top page, and immediately backed away.

I pushed open the heavy double doors of the boardroom.

Inside, twelve men and women in expensive business attire were seated around a long mahogany table, talking frantically among themselves. At the far end of the room stood Brandon, looking pale and disheveled, holding a microphone as he tried to address the board. Beside him sat Victoria, dressed in a sharp black jacket, her eyes darting around the room like a trapped animal.

The entire room went dead silent the moment I walked in.

"Nora?" Brandon gasped, his microphone making a loud, high-pitched screech against the sound system. "What are you doing here? This is an executive board meeting!"

"Correction, Brandon," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the glass walls as I walked toward the center of the room. "This was your executive board meeting. As of eight o'clock this morning, it is a formal debt liquidation assessment."

Victoria slammed her hand onto the table, standing up to glare at me. "You have no standing here, Nora! You are a grieving, emotionally unstable woman who is abusing her father's legacy to launch a personal vendetta against my family! Board members, I demand that you have security escort this woman out immediately!"

Not a single board member moved. In fact, several of the senior directors looked down at their tablets, where notification alerts regarding Apex Global’s formal foreclosure notices had just arrived.

"Sit down, Victoria," Howard said firmly as he walked to the head of the table. "You don't hold a single voting share in this company. You are merely an unlisted consultant receiving unauthorized monthly retainers from a shell company in Delaware."

A murmur of shock rippled through the board members.

Brandon took a step toward me, his hands shaking. "Nora, please... you're ruining everything. We can fix this! Whatever problems we have in our marriage, we can handle them privately! Don't destroy the company my father spent thirty years building!"

"Your father built a legitimate logistics firm, Brandon," I replied, staring at him with cold detachment. "You turned it into a money-laundering vessel to fund your affairs, buy international properties, and construct a legal conspiracy to kidnap my child."

"That is a lie!" Brandon shouted, pointing a finger at me. "She's fabricating evidence! She was suffering from severe postpartum depression! She wasn't fit to care for Liam, and everything I did was to protect my son!"

Laura stepped forward, opening her leather briefcase and pulling out twelve bound legal folders. She distributed them down both sides of the long conference table.

"In those folders, board members," Laura announced, "you will find verified bank transcripts, forged travel visa applications for Switzerland, and sworn affidavits from Ms. Chloe Bennett detailing Mr. Vance’s deliberate embezzlement of over four million dollars of Vance Logistics operational reserves."

The board members immediately began flipping through the folders. Gasps and hushed whispers filled the room as they read through the damning evidence.

"This is absurd!" Victoria yelled, her voice cracking with hysteria. "These are private family matters! Brandon was managing our family estate!"

"Your 'family estate' was being funded by defrauding your own board of directors," Howard countered sternly. "And as of twenty minutes ago, Apex Global has officially revoked all credit guarantees extended to Vance Logistics. Furthermore, we are exercising our legal right to demand immediate repayment of the outstanding twenty-five-million-dollar operational loan."

The lead independent director of Vance Logistics, an elderly man named Arthur Pendelton, slowly closed his folder and looked up at Brandon with deep disgust. "Brandon... is this true? Did you use corporate credit lines to secure personal properties in Zurich?"

Brandon opened his mouth to lie, but the sheer weight of the evidence sitting in front of every director paralyzed him. He looked around the room, searching for a single ally, a single friendly face among the colleagues he had known for a decade. Every single director looked away from him.

"Effective immediately," Arthur Pendelton declared, his voice cold and uncompromising, "the board of directors calls for a vote to relieve Brandon Vance of his duties as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, pending a full federal investigation."

"You can't do this!" Brandon yelled, his voice sounding small and desperate. "I am the majority common shareholder!"

"You were the majority shareholder," I corrected him, taking a step closer to him until I was standing right across the table. "Until Apex Global exercised its pledge rights on your pledged equity. As of this morning, Brandon, you hold less than five percent of this company. You are no longer the CEO. You are no longer a major shareholder. And by the end of the day, you won't even have an office in this building."

Victoria looked as though she was about to faint, slumping back into her chair with her face buried in her hands. Brandon stood entirely frozen, staring at me as if he were seeing a complete stranger.

"How could you do this to me?" he whispered, his voice cracking with genuine anguish. "I loved you, Nora."

I looked at him, feeling no triumph, no joy—only a profound, absolute emptiness.

"You didn't love me, Brandon," I whispered back so only he could hear. "You loved the idea of controlling me. You loved the idea of taking everything my father built and making it yours. But you forgot one simple thing."

May you like

"What?" he choked out.

"My father built his empire to protect his daughter," I said softly, turning on my heel toward the exit. "And I will use every dollar of it to protect my son."
