Zero nine

Chapter 9 - The London Counter-Attack Z

The morning sun over Paradise Valley was obscured by a thick blanket of gray desert clouds, matching the heavy mood inside Beckett’s private study. By six in the morning, the long conference table was once again covered in documents, international legal briefs, and empty espresso cups.

Lila was upstairs in her room, playing with her golden retriever puppy, oblivious to the fact that her future was once again being traded on a global chessboard.

"Julian Mercer wasn't bluffs last night," Tessa Monroe said, sliding a thick stack of blue-bound international legal briefs across the wood table. "My contacts in London confirmed that Mercer Global Logistics filed the jurisdiction injunction in the High Court of Justice yesterday afternoon. They are using a archaic offshore probate law to lock Lila’s trust in litigation limbo."

I buried my face in my hands, feeling the familiar, suffocating weight of anxiety settling over my chest. "How could Caleb’s family do this again? They already lost in court here! Douglas is facing federal prison time!"

"Douglas was greedy and stupid," Beckett said calmly, sitting down beside me and placing a warm, reassuring hand over my trembling fingers. "Julian is calculated and desperate. Mercer Global Logistics lost forty percent of its market value last quarter due to supply chain failures in Europe. Julian needs Lila’s voting shares to approve a desperate merger with a French logistics conglomerate. If he doesn't get those shares, his own board will oust him by the end of the month."

"So he’s willing to starve a child’s trust just to save his corporate chair," I said, a deep bitterness coating my tongue.

"He thinks he can wear you down," Beckett said, his dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal intensity. "He assumes that because London is five thousand miles away, we can't hit back fast enough. He miscalculated."

Tessa raised an eyebrow. "Beckett, what are you planning? Constructing an international defense brief for the London High Court will take weeks."

"We aren't going to defend in London," Beckett replied, pulling a black leather notebook from his jacket. "We are going to attack them in Singapore."

I looked at him, startled. "Singapore?"

"Mercer Global Logistics holds seventy percent of its physical shipping container assets through a holding company registered in Singapore," Beckett explained, a slow, cold smile spreading across his face. "And the Chairman of the Singapore Maritime Arbitration Board happens to be a close personal friend and long-term client of Shaw & Finch. I spoke with him at three this morning."

Beckett tapped a pen against his notebook. "If we file an emergency maritime lien against Julian’s primary cargo fleet docked in Singapore based on his uncle Douglas’s fraudulent inter-company loans, the Singapore authorities will freeze his entire European supply line within forty-eight hours."

Tessa let out a low whistle, a slow grin breaking across her usually stern face. "That will cost Julian fifteen million dollars a day in delayed cargo penalties."

"Precisely," Beckett said smoothly. "Julian wanted an international fight. I'm giving him a global collapse."

Before we could celebrate the strategic brilliance of the move, my phone chimed on the table. It was an incoming video call from an encrypted foreign number.

I glanced at Beckett, who gave me a firm nod. I tapped the screen and set the phone on the table.

Julian Mercer’s sharp, arrogant face appeared on the high-definition display. He was sitting in a luxurious leather chair in what appeared to be a private jet, a glass of scotch in his hand.

"Mara," Julian said, his voice smooth and insufferable. "I assume your high-priced corporate lawyer has explained the reality of the London High Court injunction by now?"

"Julian," I said coldly, leaning toward the screen. "You are wasting your time and your money."

Julian chuckled, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Am I? You see, Mara, you still don't understand how the real world works. You think because Beckett Shaw bought you a fancy title and paid off your mortgage that you sit at the big table now. But you’re just a distraction. A pretty widow he’s using to stroke his own ego."

Beckett leaned forward into the camera's frame, his shadow falling over the screen. "Julian."

Julian’s smirk faltered slightly at the sound of Beckett’s voice, but he maintained his supercilious posture. "Ah, Beckett. I hear you were making wild threats at the gala last night about shorting my stock. Go ahead and try. My European underwriters have already guaranteed our liquidity through the winter."

"Check your email, Julian," Beckett said softly, his tone dangerously calm.

Julian frowned, setting his glass of scotch down on the small table inside his jet. He picked up his tablet, tapped the screen, and began to read.

As his eyes scanned the document sent directly from the Singapore Maritime Arbitration Board, the color rapidly drained from Julian’s face. His arrogant posture collapsed, his mouth opening slightly in absolute, utter shock.

"What... what is this?" Julian stammered, his voice suddenly losing all of its polished composure. "An emergency maritime asset freeze in Singapore? This is illegal! You have no jurisdiction over our Asian fleet!"

"Under International Maritime Law, an ongoing federal wire fraud investigation involving parent holding entities allows for immediate asset impoundment," Tessa Monroe interjected, stepping into the camera frame with a serene smile. "Your ships are grounded in port, Julian. And every hour they sit there, Mercer Global Logistics bleeds one point two million dollars."

Julian slammed his fist against the armrest of his leather chair, his face contorting into a mask of pure rage. "You arrogant bastard! You’re going to ruin the entire family legacy for a six-year-old child's trust?!"

"The family legacy was ruined the moment you and Douglas decided to treat Caleb’s daughter as collateral," Beckett said, his dark eyes burning into the camera lens like hot coals. "You have six hours to withdraw the London injunction, sign a full legal release waiving all future claims to Lila’s estate, and surrender your board seat at Mercer Global. If you don't, by midnight, I execute the maritime lien—and your company goes into involuntary bankruptcy by morning."

"You wouldn't dare," Julian spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror.

"Try me," Beckett whispered softly.

And with that, Beckett reached out and disconnected the call, leaving the screen completely black.
