Chapter 10 - The Hidden Will Z

The silence in the study after the call ended was heavy, charged with the lingering electricity of a brutal corporate execution. I looked at Beckett, my heart pounding in my chest.

"Do you think he’ll surrender?" I asked softly, searching his dark eyes.

"He has no choice," Beckett said, sliding his phone back into his pocket. "Julian is a coward who hides behind international legal complexity. When forced into a corner where his personal fortune is on the line, he will break."

Tessa Monroe was already packing her leather briefcase. "I'm heading to my office to draft the formal surrender agreement and the global release forms. If Julian’s solicitors in London are as smart as I think they are, they’ll advise him to sign before the Singapore trading markets open tonight."

As Tessa exited the study, leaving us alone, the tension in the room began to diffuse, replaced by a quiet, intimate atmosphere.

Beckett turned toward me, his hands resting on his hips as he looked down at me with an expression of profound tenderness. "Are you alright, Mara?"

"I think so," I said, letting out a long, shuddering sigh as I sank back into my chair. "It just feels like every time we win, another ghost from Caleb’s family appears out of the dark."

Beckett walked around the table, pulled up a chair directly beside mine, and sat down. He reached out, gently lifting my chin with his index finger so that my eyes met his.

"The ghosts are almost gone, Mara," Beckett whispered softly. "I promise you. Once Julian signs these papers, there is no one left in the Mercer family with any legal standing to ever touch you or Lila again."

Before I could answer, a soft knock came at the door. Beckett’s personal assistant, Sarah, stepped quietly into the study, holding a yellowed, vintage leather binder.

"Mr. Shaw, Ms. Ellison," Sarah said softly. "The courier just arrived from Tucson. A private safe-deposit box at First Arizona Bank was opened this morning following the federal court order against Douglas Mercer. The bank manager sent this directly to us."

I frowned, taking the heavy yellowed binder from Sarah. "A safe-deposit box?"

"It was registered in Caleb’s name three days before his accident," Sarah explained before quietly closing the study door behind her.

My hands began to tremble as I opened the worn leather cover. Inside was not a stack of corporate balance sheets or bank notices, but a series of hand-written letters on plain white notepad paper, written in Caleb’s neat, familiar handwriting.

Tears instantly blurred my eyes at the sight of my late husband's script.

If you are reading this, Mara, the first page began, it means my father Douglas found out what I was trying to do, or I was unable to come home to you and our sweet girl.

Beckett stood up quietly, giving me space, but I reached out and caught his wrist, pulling him gently back down beside me. "Stay. Please."

Beckett nodded softly, staying right beside me as I read the letter aloud, my voice trembling with raw emotion.

Mara, I know you are strong—stronger than you ever give yourself credit for. But my family is ruthless. They look at our daughter not as a blessing, but as a bank account to fund their sinking ships. I have hidden the original 1984 foundation documents in this safe box to ensure Douglas can never use them against you. But more importantly, I need you to know something.

I knew my time was short. I knew Douglas was tracking my movements. That's why I met with Beckett Shaw. I asked him to promise me one thing: that if anything ever happened to me, he would use his brilliance, his power, and his firm to shield you and Lila from the storm.

A quiet sob broke from my throat as I read those words. I looked up at Beckett, who was staring at the paper, his jaw tight, his own eyes holding a rare glistened moisture.

"Caleb asked you to shield us?" I whispered, my voice choking on the emotion. "That’s why you kept watching over me for three years?"

"Caleb was terrified for you, Mara," Beckett said softly, his voice gravelly with deep feeling. "The night before his accident, he made me swear on my honor that I would step in if his family ever came after you. I gave him my word. But over the last three years... watching you fight, watching you grow into an extraordinary leader, watching you love Lila with every ounce of your soul... my promise to Caleb turned into something else entirely."

"What did it turn into?" I asked, my heart hammering wildly in my chest as I searched his dark, intense face.

Beckett reached out, gently cupping my face in his large, warm hand, his thumb softly tracing my cheekbone.

"It turned into the only thing that matters to me in this world," Beckett murmured, his voice rich with an undeniable, fierce devotion. "It turned into loving you, Mara. Not because of a promise to a dead man. But because you are the most incredible woman I have ever known."

I dropped the letter onto the table and threw my arms around his neck, burying my face into his shoulder as silent tears of joy and healing washed over my skin. Beckett held me tightly, his arms locking around my waist, lifting me slightly off the chair as he held me close to his chest.

"I love you, Beckett," I whispered into his ear. "I love you so much."

Beckett pulled back slightly, looking down into my eyes with a smile so breathtaking it made my breath catch in my throat.

"Good," Beckett whispered, leaning down to press his lips to mine in a kiss that was filled with three years of unspoken yearning, fiery passion, and absolute commitment. "Because I have no intention of ever letting you go."

The study door clicked open suddenly, and Lila ran inside, holding a bright purple drawing in her hand, with her golden retriever puppy trotting happily behind her.

"Mommy! Mr. Handsome!" Lila called out, stopping in her tracks when she saw us holding each other. She put her hands on her little hips, her eyes sparkling with pure mischievous delight. "Are you guys kissing again? Yuck!"

Beckett laughed, picking Lila up in one smooth motion and settling her onto his hip while keeping his other arm wrapped securely around my waist.

"Not yuck, Little Ninja," Beckett said, tapping her nose playfully. "It's called a corporate merger."

Lila giggled, hugging her stuffed rabbit to her chest. "Does that mean Mr. Handsome is staying forever?"

May you like

Beckett looked at me, his dark eyes shining with absolute warmth, love, and a future filled with endless light.

"Forever," Beckett promised softly. "And not a second less."
