Chapter 12 - The Shadow War Z

The Paradise Valley estate was lit up like a fortress under the star-filled Arizona night sky. Private security guards in dark suits patrolled the perimeter of the property, their discreet earpieces glowing softly in the dark. Inside the main house, the living room had been transformed into an intelligence war room.
Tessa Monroe was sitting at the glass table alongside Beckett’s Chief of Security, Marcus Vance—a former high-ranking military intelligence officer with a severe facial scar and a calm, terrifying demeanor.
Lila was upstairs, fast asleep in her bedroom, guarded by two security officers outside her door, her golden retriever puppy curled up at the foot of her bed.
"Victor Sterling is currently operating out of a private compound in Miami," Marcus Vance explained, tapping a digital tablet that projected a high-resolution file onto the wall screen. "He runs a shadow private equity firm called Aethelgard Holdings. He uses offshore entities in the Cayman Islands and Panama to buy up distressed corporate debt, squeeze the owners, and liquidate their assets."
I sat beside Beckett, my fingers tightly intertwined with his beneath the table. "And he was using Douglas Mercer to get to Caleb’s daughter's trust?"
"Exactly," Tessa Monroe interjected, pointing to a complex flow chart of financial transactions. "Douglas owed Sterling thirty-two million dollars in failed real estate ventures in Las Vegas. Sterling promised to erase Douglas’s debt if Douglas handed over Lila’s voting shares in Mercer Supply Corp."
"Which would have allowed Sterling to gut the company and use its assets to launch a short-attack against Shaw & Finch," Beckett finished smoothly, his deep voice cold and precise. "Sterling doesn't care about the eighteen million dollars, Mara. He wanted to use Caleb’s daughter as a Trojan horse to bankrupt my firm and destroy everything I built."
"What is his next move?" I asked, looking at Marcus.
Marcus zoomed in on a series of recent financial transfers on the screen. "Three days ago, Aethelgard Holdings quietly purchased twenty-two percent of the commercial debt on the office building where Shaw & Finch is headquartered in downtown Scottsdale. If he acquires eight percent more by Friday, he becomes the primary landlord of your corporate headquarters."
"He wants to evict us," I realized, a flash of anger rising through my anxiety. "He wants to create a public scandal, throw our operations into chaos, and tank our stock price before our mid-year earnings report."
"It's a classic Sterling move," Beckett said, leaning back in his chair, a cold, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "He thinks in terms of physical territorial intimidation. He assumes that by threatening my building, he can force me into a quiet cash settlement."
"What are we going to do?" Tessa asked, looking at Beckett. "We can buy out the remaining commercial debt ourselves, but it will require fifty million dollars in liquid capital by Thursday afternoon."
Beckett didn't hesitate for a single second. "Execute the liquidity transfer from my personal trust at sunrise tomorrow."
I looked at him, stunned. "Fifty million dollars from your personal savings? Beckett, no! That’s too much risk!"
Beckett turned to me, his dark eyes softening instantly as he cupped my hand in both of his warm palms. "Mara, money is just a tool. Sterling thinks he can threaten my life's work, my firm, and the peace of mind of the woman I love. I would burn every cent I own to keep you and Lila safe."
"We don't need to burn fifty million dollars," I suddenly spoke up, a bold, brilliant idea forming in my mind as I stared at the financial flow chart on the wall.
Beckett, Tessa, and Marcus all turned to look at me in surprise.
"Mara?" Beckett asked, raising an eyebrow. "What are you thinking?"
I stood up, walked over to the digital screen, and pointed to a small, secondary holding company listed under Sterling’s offshore portfolio.
"Look at this entity here—Aethelgard Logistics South," I said, my creative strategy brain firing on all cylinders. "Sterling isn't just buying our building’s debt. He leveraged eighty percent of Aethelgard’s liquid capital to buy short options against our eco-resort campaign pitch with Klaus Vance today!"
Tessa leaned closer to the screen, her eyes widening. "She's right! Sterling bet thirty million dollars that Klaus Vance would reject our pitch today!"
"And because Klaus accepted our pitch and signed the preliminary contract," I said, a triumphant smile lighting up my face, "Sterling’s short position is currently exposed by over forty million dollars. If we release the official news of the Vance contract to the Wall Street Journal tomorrow morning instead of Friday..."
"...Sterling suffers a massive margin call," Beckett finished my sentence, his dark eyes lighting up with intense, ecstatic pride. "His brokers will automatically liquidate his shares in Aethelgard Holdings to cover the losses—including his stake in our Scottsdale building!"
Tessa let out a loud, delighted laugh, slamming her notebook shut. "Mara, that is absolute genius! You aren't just defending our firm—you're forcing his own brokers to bankrupt him!"
Beckett stood up, walked over to me, and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace right in front of Tessa and Marcus.

"You brilliant, beautiful woman," Beckett whispered near my ear, kissing my neck softly. "You just defeated a international hedge fund mogul with a single press release."
"I told you," I whispered back, smiling into his chest as his arms held me tight. "I had a very good mentor."
