Chapter 7 - The Final Takeover

Z
By four o'clock that afternoon, the executive boardroom on the top floor of Mercer Supply Corp’s corporate headquarters in downtown Tucson was filled with an atmosphere of impending doom.
Douglas Mercer sat at the head of the long mahogany table, looking gray, exhausted, and ten years older than he had that morning. His daughter Vanessa sat beside him, nervously biting her fingernails down to the quick, surrounded by a team of panicked corporate attorneys.
The double doors swung open, and Beckett Shaw walked in.
He didn't wear a coat, just his dark tailored suit vest, crisp white shirt with rolled sleeves, and an air of absolute, terrifying dominance. Flanking him were Tessa Monroe, two senior forensic accountants, and me.
Douglas didn't even have the strength to stand up. "This is private property, Shaw. Get out before I have security remove you."
Beckett didn't answer. He simply walked to the opposite end of the table, pulled out the high-backed leather chair, and sat down. He tossed a thick blue legal dossier onto the wood surface, sliding it forward with one finger.
"You don't have security anymore, Douglas," Beckett said flatly. "Your private security firm canceled their contract twenty minutes ago when the federal wire fraud indictment was unsealed."
Vanessa gasped, dropping her pen onto the floor. "What indictment?"
Tessa Monroe stepped forward, opening her briefcase. "At three o'clock, the United States District Court for the District of Arizona issued formal arrest warrants for Douglas Mercer and Vanessa Mercer based on the forensic evidence of trust fund embezzlement and tax evasion we provided this morning. The FBI is currently downstairs in your lobby."
Douglas’s hands began to shake violently. "You can't do this... Caleb was my son! The company belongs to the family!"
"Caleb knew you were a criminal," I said, stepping up beside Beckett, looking down at the man who had tormented my life for three long years. "He spent the last six months of his life trying to protect his daughter from your greed. And today, Caleb’s wish comes true."
Beckett tapped the blue folder. "Under Section 4 of the original 2023 Mercer Trust Agreement, executed by Caleb Ellison, control of the company's proxy voting shares transfers immediately to the designated corporate guarantor in the event of criminal malfeasance by the trustee. That guarantor is Shaw & Finch."
Beckett leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table, resting his chin on his laced fingers, locking his lethal dark eyes onto Douglas.
"I now control sixty-two percent of Mercer Supply Corp," Beckett declared, his voice cutting through the room like a executioner's blade. "Your board of directors just held an emergency virtual vote ten minutes ago. You are officially removed as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Your assets have been frozen by federal order, and your buyout deal with the private equity firm has been restructured. Every single dollar generated by this company's restructuring will go directly into Lila Ellison’s irrevocable trust fund."
Douglas slumped back into his chair, looking like a man who had been struck by lightning. Vanessa burst into hysterics, putting her head in her hands.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway outside. The boardroom doors opened once more, revealing four federal agents in dark suits.
"Douglas Mercer? Vanessa Mercer?" the lead agent announced, producing a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and grand larceny. Stand up and place your hands behind your back."
As the federal agents handcuffed Caleb’s father and sister, dragging them out of the executive suite in shame, I stood silently beside Beckett, watching the shadow that had haunted my life for years finally disappear down the hall.
The room grew quiet again. The sun was setting over the Tucson horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of crimson and violet.
Beckett stood up from his chair, turned to me, and reached out his hand. "It's over, Mara. You're free."
I looked at his open hand, then up at his face—no longer just the ruthless CEO or the protective guardian, but the man who had stood by me when the whole world was crashing down around my ears. I stepped forward and wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, burying my face into the warmth of his shoulder.
Beckett hesitated for a fraction of a second before his arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me close, holding me as if he would never let go. The weight of three years of sorrow, fear, and exhaustion finally melted away in his embrace.
"Thank you," I whispered into his neck, tears of true joy spilling over my cheeks. "Thank you for saving us."
"You saved yourself, Mara," Beckett murmured softly, his hand resting gently against the back of my head. "I just made sure you had the right stage to do it."
Three Months Later
The Saturday sun was warm over the backyard patio of Beckett’s Paradise Valley estate. The scent of grilled burgers filled the air, replacing the sterile corporate atmosphere of the past few months.
Lila was running across the lush green lawn, wearing a little red cape, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Beckett had bought her for her seventh birthday three weeks ago.
"Look, Mom! Mr. Button is riding the puppy!" Lila shouted happily, her laughter ringing out clear and bright under the blue Arizona sky.
I sat at the outdoor teak table, sipping a cold glass of lemonade, watching her play. My life had transformed entirely. The red letters were gone, replaced by a secure future, a thriving career as Vice President, and a peaceful home.
Beckett walked out from the outdoor kitchen, wearing a casual black polo shirt and jeans, carrying two plates of fresh food. He set one down in front of me and sat beside me, his arm sliding naturally over the back of my chair.
He reached over, taking my hand in his, intertwining his fingers with mine. His thumb gently rubbed the back of my hand, a gesture that had become a familiar, comforting part of my daily life.
"What are you thinking about?" Beckett asked softly, looking at me with dark eyes that held no secrets anymore—only warmth and deep affection.
"I was thinking about the morning Lila talked to you in the hallway," I said, smiling softly as I looked into his eyes. "About how terrified I was that I was going to get fired."
Beckett laughed—that deep, genuine, unguarded laugh that had stopped the entire floor three months ago.
"Best corporate merger of my life," Beckett whispered, leaning in closer.
His lips met mine in a slow, sweet, and deeply passionate kiss that tasted like summer and promised a lifetime of security, love, and untamed happiness.
When he pulled back, Lila was standing by the table, hands on her hips, watching us with a massive, triumphant grin on her face.
"I told you!" Lila announced loudly, pointing her finger at Beckett. "I told you you were too handsome to be alone!"

Beckett looked at my daughter, then back at me, a brilliant, breathtaking smile lighting up his face.
"You were right, Little Ninja," Beckett said softly, pulling both of us into his arms. "You were completely right."
