Chapter 8 - THE ARRAIGNMENTZ

The Los Angeles County Courthouse was packed the following Tuesday morning. Reporters from major business journals and local news outlets squeezed into the wooden pews of Courtroom 402.

Claire sat in the front row, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, her posture straight, her expressions calm and unyielding. Next to her sat Victoria Sterling.

Across the room, sitting at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, was Ethan Vance. His hair was messy, his eyes hollow, stripped of all the charm and swagger he had used to deceive people for years. Behind him sat his sister Lily and his parents, looking defeated and humiliated under the bright fluorescent lights.

The judge, a stern woman in her late sixties named Justice Mercer, tapped her wooden gavel against the desk.

"Case number 24-CR-8891, the People of the State of California versus Ethan Vance," the clerk announced. "Charges include grand larceny, federal wire fraud, identity theft, commercial burglary, and attempt to steal proprietary trade secrets."

The prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the State requests that the defendant be held without bail pending trial. Mr. Vance poses an extreme flight risk. He attempted to break into the victim's estate while possessing foreign contact details for illegal trade secret brokers, and he has zero liquid assets remaining following the collapse of his fraudulent shell enterprise."

Ethan's appointed public defender—as Braman had officially dropped him due to non-payment—stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my client has no prior criminal record. We ask for a reasonable bail set at—"

"Reasonable bail?" Justice Mercer interrupted, glaring over her reading glasses at the defense table. "Your client forged federal bank documents to secure two million dollars, stole nearly eighty thousand dollars from his spouse, and was caught red-handed by law enforcement inside a private residence attempting to destroy high-value technology assets."

She slammed her gavel down with an authoritative thud.

"Bail is denied. The defendant will remain in custody until the preliminary hearing."

Ethan flinched as if he had been struck. He turned his head desperately toward the gallery, looking for Claire.

"Claire!" he called out as the bailiffs grabbed his arms to lead him out through the side door. "Claire, please talk to them! Tell them it was a domestic dispute! Tell them we can settle this!"

Claire didn't say a word. She didn't even blink. She watched him being led away in chains, his voice fading down the echoing concrete hallway until the heavy metal doors clicked shut.

Outside the courthouse, a swarm of reporters surrounded Claire as she descended the wide stone steps.

"Claire! Are you going to rebuild your tech startup?"

"Claire, how does it feel to see your ex-husband facing up to twenty years in federal prison?"

Claire stopped at the podium setup by her PR team. She adjusted the microphone and looked directly into the camera lenses.

"For three years," Claire said, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet crowd, "I allowed someone to convince me that my success was a shared commodity, while my boundaries were a problem. Women in business are often taught to compromise their achievements to protect the fragile egos of the people around them."

She paused, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air.

"I am done compromising. My company was built on my sweat, my intelligence, and my sacrifice. Today, the legal system affirmed that truth. To every woman listening: never let anyone make you feel guilty for protecting what you worked tirelessly to build."

She stepped away from the podium and entered the back seat of her awaiting car, leaving the press corps scrambling for quotes.
