Chapter 6 - THE TRAP DOORZ

The silence in the high-rise conference room was suffocating. Ethan looked like a man standing on a trapdoor with the lever already pulled.
"You wouldn't," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling. "Claire, you loved me. You wouldn't put your own husband in federal prison."
Claire stared at him, looking at the man she had shared a bed with for three years. She looked for any trace of the person who used to bring her coffee during late nights at the office, the man who had promised to stand by her. She realized now that man had never existed. He was just a costume Ethan wore until he thought he had secured her wealth.
"You stopped being my husband the moment you treated my life's work like your personal bank account," Claire said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "You have until 5:00 PM. Not a minute later."
Braman didn't wait for his client. He grabbed his briefcase, gave Ethan a look of utter disgust, and walked out of the conference room, slamming the door behind him. He was an aggressive lawyer, but he wasn't about to get dragged into a federal fraud conspiracy.
Ethan sat alone across from Claire and her legal team. The reality of his situation was settling in: he was broke, his business was a fraudulent shell, his reputation was hanging by a thread, and his own family was sitting in a cheap motel near the airport waiting for him to bring them back to a mansion he didn't own.
"Claire... please," Ethan sobbed, falling onto his knees right beside the conference table. "I'm sorry! I was insecure! Seeing you make millions while my business struggled... it broke me! I just wanted you to respect me! I wanted my parents to look at me the way they looked at you!"
Claire stood up, pulling her leather bag over her shoulder. She looked down at him kneeling on the carpet.
"Respect isn't stolen, Ethan. It's earned," she said softly. "You wanted to play the high-stakes game. Now you have to pay the buy-in."
She walked out of the room, leaving Ethan groveling on the floor while Victoria Sterling monitored the clock.
At 4:48 PM, Braman’s office sent over a signed full release. Ethan had surrendered every claim to marital property, waived all rights to spousal support, and issued an official public retraction through his PR team, citing "misunderstandings regarding independent financial trusts."
By 6:00 PM, the headlines vanished from the news feeds.
Claire thought it was over. But she had underestimated how far a desperate man would go when he had nothing left to lose.
Later that night, as rain began to pour over the city, Claire returned to her furnished high-rise rental. She poured herself a glass of red wine and stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, watching the city lights blur through the rain-streaked window.
Suddenly, her phone chimed with a private alert from her corporate security chief, Frank.
"Claire, don't go back to the main house," Frank said urgently over the line.
"I'm at my rental, Frank. What's wrong?"
"Ethan just bypassed the outer security gate at the estate. He used a physical backup key he kept hidden in his car. He's inside the empty house right now—and he's not alone."
Claire’s eyes narrowed. "Who is with him?"
"Lily and his father, Richard. And Claire... our remote sensors show they are opening the floor safes in the master study."

Claire felt a cold surge of adrenaline. The master study contained something far more valuable than cash or jewelry. It held the original encrypted server drives containing the source code for her next technology patent—an unreleased software architecture worth tens of millions.
Ethan wasn't just trying to survive anymore. He was trying to steal her future.
