Chapter 6 - The Leaked Tapes

The arrest of Jason and Linda Carter made front-page news across the state. The image of Linda being led out of a budget motel in handcuffs, her face twisted in rage while federal agents ushered her into an unmarked sedan, went viral on social media within hours. The media dubbed it the "Dynasty Downfall."
However, the legal war was far from over.
While the federal government processed the financial fraud charges, the local District Attorney was preparing for Linda’s criminal trial for felony assault. To avoid a drawn-out public spectacle, Linda’s newly court-appointed public defender requested an emergency bail hearing, hoping to secure her release under house arrest while claiming "extenuating psychological distress."
I sat in the front row of the gallery during the bail hearing. Beside me, Victoria Sterling held a leather binder containing our ultimate weapon—an item we had intentionally held back from the media until this exact moment.
"Your Honor," Linda's lawyer began, gesturing toward his client, who sat at the defense table wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, looking intentionally frail. "My client is a sixty-one-year-old woman with no prior criminal record. She poses zero flight risk and no danger to the community. The incident in question was a tragic domestic dispute escalated by high emotions. We request bail be set at a reasonable amount so she can seek medical and psychological care."
The prosecutor stood up, smoothly adjusting his microphone. "The State strongly opposes bail, Your Honor. Furthermore, we wish to introduce newly authenticated evidence provided by the victim's legal team that demonstrates clear intent, lack of remorse, and a history of calculated malice."
The prosecutor nodded toward the technician at the court's audio-visual station. A large monitor facing the judge and jury box flickered to life.
"Your Honor, this is an audio clip recorded by the home automation system at Mrs. Linda Carter’s residence thirty minutes before the paramedics were called on the night of the assault," the prosecutor stated.
The room fell dead silent.
The audio began to play. The sound was crisp, crystal clear.
“She thinks she can stop the transfer, Jason!” Linda’s unmistakable, sharp voice filled the courtroom, echoing off the high ceilings. “She’s threatening to look at the books! If she talks to her uncle, we are going to prison!”
Then came Jason’s voice, hesitant but compliant. “Mom, calm down. Let’s just talk to her when she gets here—”
“No!” Linda shrieked on the tape. “We don't talk! We make sure she knows her place! She’s weak, Jason! She’s soft! You hold her arms down, take her phone, and I’ll make sure she understands what happens to little girls who try to destroy this family! She won't dare tell anyone. She has nowhere to go!”
The courtroom erupted into quiet gasps. Several jurors covered their mouths in horror.
The tape continued, capturing the violent struggle, the sound of glass breaking, my terrified cries for help, and finally, the cold, calculated sound of Linda laughing as I lay injured on the floor.
“Look at you,” Linda’s taped voice sneered, cold and ruthless. “Pathetic. You deserved every bit of this.”
The audio stopped.
Linda sat at the defense table, completely paralyzed. Her public defender slumped back in his chair, covering his face with his hands. He knew, right then and there, that any defense strategy he had built was completely destroyed.
Judge Vance’s face was dark with fury as she looked down from the bench at Linda.
"Mrs. Carter," Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with ice. "I have presided over criminal court for twenty-two years. Seldom have I heard such a terrifying display of premeditated cruelty."
"Your Honor, please!" Linda gasped, standing up, tears finally streaming down her face—real tears born of pure terror. "That tape was taken out of context! I was stressed! I was trying to protect my son!"
"Bail is DENIED," Judge Vance boomed, slamming her gavel down with a crack that sounded like a gunshot. "The defendant will remain in custody at the County Detention Center pending trial! Remand her immediately!"
Two bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Linda by her arms. She began to scream, kicking her legs as she was dragged toward the side door leading to the holding cells.
"Jason! Help me! Jason!" she shrieked, looking wildly around the room for her son.
But Jason, sitting in the jury box waiting for his own federal arraignment hearing, did not move. He did not look up. He stared blankly at his cuffed hands resting in his lap, completely motionless as his mother's screams echoed down the corridor before fading behind the heavy steel doors.
I stood up slowly, adjusting my coat. As I walked out of the courtroom, I passed Jason.
For a brief second, our eyes met. He looked at me with an expression of total brokenness, a silent plea for mercy from a man who had stripped away his own humanity for a mother who had ultimately consumed him whole.

I offered him no anger. No hatred. Only a calm, quiet smile.
Because the trial hadn't even started yet.
