Chapter 2 - The Freezing Order

Z

The morning light cut through the tinted glass of my temporary residence—a high-rise penthouse suite rented under my maiden name, Claire Vance. For three years, I had allowed myself to be dimmed, conditioned by Jason’s subtle manipulations and Linda’s relentless toxicity to believe that my worth was tied to my compliance. But as I sat across from Victoria Sterling, the city’s most ferocious forensic family lawyer, the physical bruises on my arms and collarbone served as a stark, permanent reminder of where compliance got a woman.

"The police report is airtight, Claire," Victoria said, sliding a thick blue folder across the marble desk. "The ER attending physician documented every laceration, every contusion, and the hairline fracture on your wrist. Combined with the 911 recording from Linda’s neighbor—who explicitly told the operator she heard a woman screaming for help while a man watched—we have more than enough grounds for immediate ex parte relief."

"What about the bank accounts?" I asked, my voice steady despite the tremor in my right hand.

"That’s where the real fun begins," Victoria replied, a cold, sharp smile playing on her lips. "Before Jason and Linda even left the hospital parking lot, my team filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order freezing all marital assets, joint credit lines, and corporate accounts affiliated with Carter Logistics. As of 8:15 AM, your husband’s Black Amex is declined. His corporate debit card is useless. And the $1.2 million line of credit he secretly applied for using your family’s trust as leverage? Suspended pending audit."

I took a sip of black coffee. The bitter taste grounded me. For years, Jason had quietly shifted money out of our joint equity, feeding his mother’s failing boutique real estate agency, Linda Carter Luxury Properties. They had treated my inheritance like an endless personal slush fund, assuming my grief over my grandfather’s passing made me too fragile to notice the discrepancies. They thought I was weak. They mistook my patience for ignorance.

Meanwhile, back at the gutted apartment, Jason stood frozen in the center of the vast, echoing living room. The silence in the home was deafening. The bare hardwood floors, stripped of the antique Persian rugs my family had owned for three generations, reflected the pale morning sun.

"This is an outrage!" Linda shrieked, her voice echoing off the stripped concrete walls. She pulled out her gold iPhone, her manicured fingers trembling violently as she dialed her bank. "I’m calling the police again! She robbed us, Jason! She cleared out the entire place!"

"Mom, shut up for a second!" Jason snapped, his face pale, his sweat staining the collar of his tailored shirt. He held up his phone, showing her the screen. "Look at this. My banking app... everything is red. Zero balance. Account Restricted."

"What do you mean restricted?!" Linda marched over, grabbing his arm. "Try the business account! The retainer from the Sterling deal came in yesterday!"

Jason tapped frantically on his screen. "Declined. Locked. Pending judicial review."

A sharp knock at the door shattered the quiet. Jason whipped his head around, praying it was the building manager returning to fix the key cards. Instead, a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped into the threshold, flanked by two uniformed process servers.

"Jason Carter? Linda Carter?" the man asked, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his leather briefcase.

"Who the hell are you?" Linda sneered, stepping in front of her son defensively. "If you’re another one of Claire’s thugs, you can get out of my son’s home before I call the district attorney!"

"My name is Arthur Pendelton, associate counsel for Sterling & Associates," the attorney said smoothly, stepping past her without breaking stride. He handed two identical yellow envelopes directly into Jason’s and Linda’s hands. "You’ve both been served. Mrs. Linda Carter, you are officially summoned to appear in District Court this Friday for an emergency arraignment on charges of felony assault, battery, and harassment. Mr. Jason Carter, you are served with a formal petition for dissolution of marriage, an emergency freezing order on all financial assets, and a court order mandating the immediate surrender of all corporate books for Carter Logistics."

"You can't freeze my business!" Jason yelled, his voice cracking with rising panic. "That company is mine! I built it!"

"With Mrs. Vance-Carter’s capital," Pendelton corrected without missing a beat. "Our forensic accountants have already identified $450,000 in unauthorized transfers from her trust account into Carter Logistics over the past eighteen months. Furthermore, we have subpoenaed the security footage from your mother’s property on Sunday night. Every camera angle. Every audio feed."

Linda’s jaw dropped. The color drained completely from her face. "That’s private property! You can't use that!"

"Your home security system uploads directly to a cloud server paid for by Claire’s credit card," Pendelton replied, offering a cold, polite nod. "Which makes the data marital property. And I must say, Mrs. Carter... the audio quality is remarkably clear. The grand jury is going to find it very interesting when they hear you tell your son to hold her down while you take her phone."

Jason turned to his mother, his eyes wide with utter terror. "Mom... you said those cameras weren't recording audio!"

Linda couldn't speak. She clutched the yellow envelope against her chest, her chest heaving as the reality of her situation began to close in around her like a vice.

Pendelton turned back to Jason. "Oh, and Mr. Carter? Your landlord for the Carter Logistics office building called our firm twenty minutes ago. Since the lease was backed by your wife’s personal guarantee, and that guarantee has been formally revoked as of 6:00 AM, the building management has changed the locks on your office as well. Have a pleasant day."

As the legal team exited, leaving the front door wide open, Jason fell back against the bare wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the cold floor. His phone buzzed in his hand. A text message appeared on the screen from an unknown number.
