Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

By the following Tuesday, the dominoes began to fall at a terrifying speed. The financial audit conducted by Victoria Sterling’s team opened a trapdoor under Jason and Linda that revealed crimes far beyond simple marital infidelity or domestic dispute.

Inside my private office at Vance Capital, Marcus handed me a newly printed federal document.

"The forensic team found the primary paper trail," Marcus explained, pointing to a series of wire transfers routed through an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands. "Jason wasn't just laundering money to cover Linda's gambling debts. He was operating an illegal kickback scheme through Carter Logistics. He was over-billing corporate clients and pocketing the excess under the guise of 'sub-contracting fees' paid to ghost companies owned by Linda."

"How much?" I asked, scanning the numbers.

"Over $3.8 million over four years," Marcus replied. "And because your name was listed as an inactive board member on Carter Logistics' original incorporation papers, he tried to set up a fall-back clause. If the IRS ever audited the company, the tax liability was structured to drop directly onto your personal trust."

I felt a cold rage settle into my chest. He hadn't just used me for my money; he had systematically built a trap designed to destroy my financial future while shielding himself and his mother. He had planned this long before the night Linda put her hands on me. The assault at Linda's house wasn't the beginning of the end—it was simply the catalyst that forced me to pull the string that unravelled their whole structure.

"Send everything to the United States Attorney’s Office," I commanded softly. "No deals. No settlements."

Meanwhile, in a cramped, two-bedroom motel on the outskirts of the city—the only accommodation Linda could afford using cash she had hidden in a safe deposit box—the tension had reached a boiling point.

The luxury SUV Linda drove had been repossessed the previous evening after the lease payments bounced. Their mail was overflowing with final eviction notices, court summonses, and demand letters from creditors.

Jason sat on the edge of a stained mattress, staring at a plastic bottle of cheap whiskey. He hadn't showered in three days. The polished, confident young executive was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow shell of a man who looked ten years older.

Linda burst into the room, holding a newspaper. The headline on page three read: CARTER LOGISTICS FACES FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION IN FAMILY FEUD.

"Did you see this?!" Linda screamed, throwing the paper directly at Jason’s head. "Our names are in the paper! My boutique agency has lost three clients since yesterday! Everyone is calling me a thief and a child-abuser!"

Jason didn't even move to block the newspaper. It hit his shoulder and fell to the floor.

"It's over, Mom," Jason said lifelessly, staring at the floor. "We lost."

"It is NOT over!" Linda shouted, pacing the small room like a caged animal. "We have rights! She can't do this to us! We are going to go to the news stations! We’ll tell them how her rich, snobbish family forced you into signing agreements! We’ll turn the public against her!"

Jason finally looked up, his eyes bloodshot, filled with pure contempt. "Are you really that blind? Do you still not get it?"

"Get what?!"

"Claire isn't just fighting us, Linda! She’s executing us!" Jason yelled, standing up so fast his chair flipped over behind him. "Her uncle owns half the commercial real estate in this city! Her lawyer is on the board of the state bar! She has endless resources, endless time, and absolute proof that you assaulted her and that we took her money! Who do you think the public is going to believe? A woman with a broken wrist and bank statements showing wire fraud, or a gambling addict and her coward son?!"

Linda slapped him across the face. The sharp crack echoed in the small room.

"Don't you EVER speak to me like that!" she hissed, her fingers trembling. "I gave up everything for you! I built your confidence! I got rid of the girls who weren't good enough for you until Claire came along with her money!"

Jason touched his reddened cheek, a terrible, twisted smile spreading across his lips.

"You didn't get rid of them for me," Jason whispered, realizing the horrifying truth for the first time in his life. "You got rid of them because they saw right through you. Claire was the only one who was sweet enough, patient enough to tolerate your abuse... until you pushed her too far."

Before Linda could reply, heavy footsteps sounded outside the motel room door. Three loud, authoritative knocks shook the thin wood frame.

"FBI! Open the door!" a voice boomed from outside.

Linda froze, her face draining of all color. Jason didn't even flinch. He walked slowly toward the door, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled it wide open.

Four federal agents in dark blue jackets standing in the hallway pulled out badges and warrants.

"Jason Carter? Linda Carter?" the lead agent stated coldly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."

As the agents stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Linda's wrists as she began to scream and thrash hysterically, Jason simply held out his hands, offering no resistance at all.

As the steel locked around his wrists, Jason closed his eyes, remembering the text message he had sent to me in the hospital room just six days ago.

“You deserved it.”

Now, as the federal agents led him out into the rain, he finally understood who the message was really meant for.
