Chapter 7 - The Custody Battle Begins

Saturday arrived, the day of Mark’s first supervised visitation. My father drove Lily to the Franklin Family Center, a sterile, neutral facility designed for supervised visits and custody exchanges. I stayed behind at the cabin, my anxiety levels through the roof. I spent the two hours pacing the living room floor, checking my watch every five minutes, praying that Lily would be okay.
When my father finally returned, he looked tired but calm. Lily was fast asleep in her car seat, completely unfazed by the day's events.
"How did it go?" I asked, rushing to help him carry her inside.
"The supervisor was in the room the entire time," my father said, sitting down at the kitchen island. "Mark was... well, he was a mess. He cried the minute he saw her. He held her very gently, I’ll give him that. He didn't try to cause any trouble. He asked the supervisor if he could send a message to you, but she reminded him that he could only use the app."
"Good," I said, letting out a sigh of relief. "I don't want him thinking he can bypass the rules."
But the peace didn't last long. The following Monday, Rachel called me with disturbing news.
"Mark’s attorney has filed an amended response to our divorce petition," she said, her voice tight. "He’s no longer willing to settle quietly. He’s fighting the custody arrangement."
"What?" I felt a surge of panic. "But he was the one who accused me! He’s the one who demanded the DNA test!"
"His lawyer is playing dirty now, Emily," Rachel warned. "They are arguing that Mark was a victim of 'fraudulent medical misrepresentation' by his mother, which caused a temporary state of acute mental distress. They are claiming that once the truth was revealed, Mark immediately sought to rectify his mistake, and that denying him joint custody is a form of maternal alienation. They are asking the court for a gradual transition to joint physical custody, starting with unsupervised visits next month."
I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter. "No. No way. I won't let him take her. She’s only a month old! He doesn't even know how to take care of her. He’s unstable!"
"Calm down, Emily," Rachel said, her voice steady and commanding. "This is a standard legal tactic. They are trying to scare us into settling for a joint custody arrangement. But we have a counter-strategy. We are going to bring the financial investigation of Liam to light. We are going to show that Mark’s ready acceptance of his brother's lies, without any investigation or communication with you, demonstrates a profound lack of judgment and emotional stability that directly impacts his fitness as a parent."
"What about Carol?" I asked. "Whose side is she on?"
"Carol is in a very difficult position," Rachel said. "But she’s terrified of losing access to her granddaughter. I spoke with her attorney yesterday. Carol is willing to testify on your behalf regarding Liam’s financial desperation and his history of manipulation. She’s furious with Liam for what he did, and she’s devastated by Mark’s behavior."
I felt a slight sense of relief. Carol, despite her mistakes, was still a mother. She knew her sons, and she knew which one was the victim and which one was the predator.

"We need to prepare for a deposition, Emily," Rachel said. "Mark’s lawyer will want to question you under oath. It’s going to be grueling, and they are going to try to paint you as a cold, vindictive woman who is using this mistake to punish a loving father. You need to be ready."
"I am ready," I said, my voice hardening. "They can call me whatever they want. But they will not take my daughter."
