Chapter 6 - The Brother's Malice

The transition to using the court-ordered parenting app, Our Family Wizard, was a stark reminder of how clinical my relationship with Mark had become. His messages were brief, vetted by his attorney, and filled with a desperate, pathetic politeness that made me sick.

Mark: I have paid the temporary child support into the escrow account. I hope Lily is doing well. I would like to schedule my first supervised visitation for this Saturday at the Franklin Family Center. Please let me know if this works for you.

I kept my reply entirely factual.

Emily: The date and location are acceptable. My father will drop Lily off and pick her up. You are not to make contact with him or attempt to follow him.

He agreed immediately.

While Mark was preparing for his first supervised visit, my father and I were uncovering the real reason behind his brother Liam’s malice. It wasn't just simple jealousy or sibling rivalry; it was something far more insidious.

My father had been doing some digging into Liam’s financial situation. Liam had always been the black sheep of the family—always involved in get-rich-quick schemes, always asking Carol and his late father for loans that were never repaid.

"Look at this, Emily," my father said one evening, spreading out several printed documents on the dining table. He had used his connections as a retired bank manager to look into public records. "Two months ago, Liam filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for his consulting firm. He’s in debt up to his eyeballs—nearly three hundred thousand dollars. He’s got tax liens, credit card debt, and his ex-wife is suing him for back child support."

I stared at the financial statements. "What does this have to do with Mark and me?"

"When Mark’s father passed away three years ago, he left the family trust to Carol," my father explained. "But there’s a clause in the trust. Upon Carol’s passing, or if she chooses to distribute the funds early, the money is split equally between Mark and Liam. However, the trust has a strict provision: if either brother is divorced, their portion of the trust is protected from their spouse through a prenuptial agreement or court order. But if Mark had died, or if Mark was found to have no biological heirs, his portion of the trust would revert entirely to Liam or Liam's children."

The puzzle pieces began to fall into place with a horrifying click.

"Liam knew Mark thought he was sterile," I whispered, my hand flying to my mouth. "He knew about the old medical report."

"Exactly," my father said, his face grim. "Liam knew Mark was convinced he couldn't have children. So, when you got pregnant, Liam saw an opportunity. If he could convince Mark that you were cheating, and that Lily wasn't his, Mark would divorce you. And in the ensuing chaos, if Liam could keep Mark single and bitter, there would be no heirs to Mark's estate. If something happened to Mark, or if Mark simply chose to leave his estate to his brother, Liam would inherit everything. He was trying to destroy your marriage to secure his own financial survival."

I felt a cold rage wash over me. "He used my pregnancy, my baby, as a pawn in his financial game. He practically drove his brother to destroy his own family just so he could get his hands on the trust money."

"Yes," my father said. "And he almost succeeded. He played on Mark’s deepest insecurity—his fear of being inadequate, his fear of his own infertility—and turned it into a weapon against you."

"Does Mark know this?" I asked.

"I don't know," my father replied. "But I think it’s time he found out. Rachel can use this in the divorce proceedings to show a pattern of third-party manipulation, which further solidifies why Liam needs to be kept far away from Lily."

"I want Liam ruined," I said, my voice cold and hard. "I want him to pay for what he did to us."

"He’s already ruining himself, Emily," my father said gently. "But we will make sure he never gets a dime of what he tried to steal from your daughter."
