Chapter 17 - Legal Repercussions

The arrest of Liam Miller sent shockwaves through the family.
By Monday morning, Rachel had already filed a motion to make the temporary protective order against Liam permanent. With the felony charges pending, the prosecutor was pushing for a significant prison sentence. Liam’s financial house of cards had completely collapsed, and he was now facing the grim reality of a prison cell.
I was sitting in Rachel’s office, reviewing the updated custody agreement. Mark was sitting opposite me, looking completely devastated. He had been notified of the arrest immediately, and he had spent the weekend in a state of absolute horror.
"Emily," Mark said, his voice cracking. "I... I don't even know what to say. My own brother. He could have hurt your parents. He could have hurt you. I feel so responsible."
"You aren't responsible for his actions, Mark," I said, my voice quiet but firm. "But you are responsible for allowing his influence to dictate your behavior. Liam’s greed was his own, but your lack of trust was yours."
"I know," Mark said, looking down at his hands. "I know. I’ve spoken with my attorney. I’m not going to fight the permanent protective order. I want Liam kept away from Lily just as much as you do. And... I’m willing to sign a stipulation that if Liam is ever released or makes contact, my visitation rights will be instantly reviewed to ensure Lily’s safety."
Rachel nodded, approving of the move. "That is a very responsible step, Mark. It shows the court that you are prioritizing your daughter’s physical safety over your own personal family dynamics."
"I am," Mark said, looking up at me. "I want to do this right, Emily. I want to be the father she deserves."
"I hope you do, Mark," I said. "Because she deserves a father who is strong enough to protect her, not someone who brings danger to her door."
As we left the office, Mark stopped me in the hallway. "Emily... who was that man? The one who drove you to your parents' house?"
I paused, looking at him. "His name is Julian. He’s a client of mine. He was there when I got the call, and he helped me when I was too shaken to drive."
Mark’s jaw tightened slightly, but he didn't raise his voice. He didn't look angry; he just looked incredibly sad. "He seems... like a good man. If... if he’s in your life, Emily, I hope he treats you the way I should have."
I stared at him, genuinely surprised by his maturity. The old Mark would have lashed out, accused me of replacing him, or demanded to know if Julian was around Lily. But this Mark—the one who had spent a year in intensive therapy, facing his own demons—was actually showing grace.
"Thank you, Mark," I said softly. "That means a lot."

As I walked out of the building, I felt a strange, quiet shift in the air. The war was over. The battles were done. Now, it was just about the slow, steady work of rebuilding.
