Chapter 8 - THE BLOODLINE OF ROMANO

Z

The ocean breeze in Maine was supposed to be our sanctuary. For eight months, the quiet cottage overlooking the rocky cliffs of Bar Harbor had given us the peaceful life we fought through blood and ashes to achieve. David had taken up teaching online compliance courses, and Logan’s nightmares about dark hospital corridors had finally faded, replaced by endless days of chasing tidal crabs in his yellow rainboots.

Until the black envelope arrived.

It was placed neatly under our front door at dawn, sealed with dark red wax stamped with the intricate crest of the Romano family: a crowned viper wrapped around an anchor.

I found it while making coffee. David was still upstairs, reading a storybook to Logan. My fingers trembled as I broke the wax seal. Inside was a single piece of heavy parchment, written in Alessandro’s familiar, sharp script:

Catherine, The debt is collected. Nicholas is dead. They are coming for the boy. Burn this.

The mug slipped from my hand, shattering against the hardwood floor. Hot coffee spilled over my bare feet, but I felt nothing except a wave of absolute, bone-chilling terror.

"Cathy?" David’s voice called down from the stairs, followed by the light thud of his footsteps. "What was that sound? Did you drop—"

He froze at the top of the stairs, taking in the broken ceramic, the open door, and the red-wax seal crushed in my palm.

"Who was it?" David asked, his voice instantly dropping into that tight, dangerous tone he had developed during his months on the run.

"Nicholas," I whispered, tears filling my eyes as I handed him the parchment. "Alessandro says Nicholas is dead. And..."

David read the brief lines, his face draining of all color until he looked like the ghost he used to be. "No. That's impossible. Nicholas had a dozen guards at the private estate in Como. He was untouchable."

"They're coming for Logan, David," I gasped, rushing up the stairs to grab my son. "Alessandro said they're coming for Logan! Why would anyone want Logan now?! The trial is over! Sterling is in federal prison!"

Before David could answer, the shrill scream of an emergency satellite phone cut through the quiet house. It was the secure line Alessandro had given us three months ago, locked inside a small safe in our bedroom. We had promised never to touch it unless the world was ending.

David sprinted into the bedroom, punched in the six-digit code, and yanked the receiver to his ear.

"Alessandro?!" David barked into the phone.

A woman's voice answered. Sharp, cold, and dripping with venom.

"Alessandro is currently in an intensive care unit in Milan, Mr. Winters," she said smoothly, her accent thick, refined, and distinctly Northern Italian. "His heart finally gave out after he watched his favorite nephew bleed out on the marble floor of Villa Romano."

David’s breath hitched. "Who is this?"

"I am Donna Vittoria Romano," she replied calmly. "Alessandro’s older sister. The true head of the Romano bloodline before my brother decided to build his cute little shipping empire in Baltimore."

I stood in the doorway, holding Logan tightly against my hip. He sensed the terror in the room, burying his little face into my neck, his small fingers clutching Captain Bear.

"What do you want?" David demanded, his knuckles white around the phone. "We gave up everything! We testified! Sterling is gone!"

"Sterling was a peasant," Vittoria scoffed softly. "A greedy American prosecutor playing with matches. He meant nothing to us. But what Alessandro never told you, Mr. Winters... what your sweet little nurse wife never realized... is why Alessandro protected your son in the first place."

My heart stopped beating. My eyes snapped to David, who looked just as lost as I was.

"What are you talking about?" I shouted across the room toward the speaker. "Alessandro protected my son because David saved his business!"

Vittoria laughed—a low, melodic sound that made my skin crawl.

"Is that what my foolish brother told you, Catherine?" Vittoria said. "Tell me, my dear... why did Alessandro refuse to get married? Why did he have no heirs to his billion-dollar fortune? Why did he take a bullet for your boy at the hospital?"

"Because he was a decent man underneath it all!" I yelled.

"No, Catherine," Vittoria hissed, her tone turning ice-cold. "Because four years ago, before you ever knew your husband was auditing Romano Maritime, your husband’s mother—who worked as Alessandro’s private secretary for twenty years—revealed a secret on her deathbed. Alessandro isn't just your son's guardian angel. Your husband, David... is Alessandro Romano’s illegitimate son."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis. The air left my lungs in a sickening gasp.

I looked at David. He stood paralyzed, the phone slipping slightly from his ear, his jaw trembling as the world he thought he knew crumbled into dust.

"David..." I breathed, the word barely a whisper.

"David is the rightful heir to the entire Romano estate," Vittoria continued, her voice echoing mercilessly through the speaker. "Which makes little Logan the next in line for the throne. And my sons and I will not allow a filthy American accountant and his bastard child to inherit what belongs to the true house of Romano."

A sudden, sharp pop-pop-pop of suppressed rifle fire echoed from the woods at the edge of our driveway.

The windows of our living room shattered downstairs.

"They're here," David whispered, his eyes wide with absolute horror.
