Chapter 5 - THE Shattered RING

Vance shifted his gun away from David’s temple, aiming it straight at my chest. "You bluffing little bitch—"
BANG!
A deafening shot shattered the air, but it didn't come from Vance’s gun.
Nicholas fired with lethal precision. The bullet tore through Vance’s shoulder, spinning him backward. Vance shrieked in pain, dropping his weapon as he crashed onto the concrete floor.
"Move!" Alessandro yelled.
Chaos erupted instantly. Vance’s hidden gunmen emerged from the shadows on the upper catwalks, opening fire on us. Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark warehouse like terrifying bolts of lightning. Nicholas tackled me to the ground behind a stack of heavy wooden crates as bullets splintered the wood inches above our heads.
"Stay down!" Nicholas roared, returning fire up toward the catwalks.
Alessandro didn't duck. Despite his frail condition, the old mob boss stood tall in the middle of the crossfire, pulling a compact pistol from his coat and dropping an incoming gunman with two swift, ruthless shots. He moved like a grim reaper, unbothered by the chaos around him.
"David!" I screamed, crawling through the dust and splintered wood toward the center of the room.
David was thrashing frantically in his chair, trying to tip himself over. I reached him, pulling a pair of medical trauma shears from my coat pocket—tools I always carried in my nursing kit. With shaking hands, I jammed the blades beneath the thick leather straps binding his wrists and cut through them with all my strength.
"Cathy!" David sobbed, his hands coming free. He immediately pulled me into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his bloodied face into my neck. "God, Cathy... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry!"
"Save it!" I snapped, pulling back and slapping him across his bruised cheek with enough force to make my hand sting. "We are going to have a very long, very loud conversation about your choices later! Right now, we need to move!"
David blinked, shocked, before a tearful, bloody smile broke across his face. "God, I missed you."
"Up! Both of you, get up!" Alessandro commanded, appearing beside us as Nicholas covered our flank, firing methodically into the darkness.
Vance was crawling on the floor nearby, leaving a trail of dark blood behind him as he reached for a dropped detonator on the ground.
"If I go down... you all go down!" Vance screamed, his face contorted in madness as he slammed his hand down on the red button.
A series of loud explosions ripped through the support beams of the warehouse. The roof groaned violently, concrete dust raining down as rusted iron girders began to buckle and collapse.
"The building is coming down! Run!" Nicholas shouted.
We sprinted toward the loading bay exit as heavy debris crashed around us. Massive concrete blocks smashed into the floor where we had been standing seconds prior. David grabbed my hand, his grip tight, pulling me through the thick smoke and dust.
We burst through the double doors into the cool night air just as the center roof of the warehouse caved in with a thunderous roar, sending a massive plume of fire and dust skyward.
We collapsed onto the wet gravel of the alleyway, gasping for air, coated in ash and sweat.
Behind us, the warehouse was an inferno. Victor Vance and his men were buried under tons of twisted steel and burning concrete.
I lay on my back, watching the smoke drift toward the stars, my chest heaving. Beside me, David lay panting, his hand still tightly clutching mine. On my other side, Alessandro stood quietly, brushing ash from his suit lapel, looking entirely unfazed.
"Is it over?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
"Vance is dead," Alessandro said softly, looking back at the flames. "The enforcement arm of the syndicate is destroyed. The grand jury will receive the clean files tomorrow morning."
David slowly sat up, turning to face me. The glare of the fire illuminated the deep lines of pain, regret, and exhaustion etched into his face. He looked down at our joined hands, his thumb gently tracing my knuckles.
"Cathy..." David choked out, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on his cheeks. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I ruined everything. I thought... I truly thought I was keeping you safe."
I sat up, turning my full attention to the man I had mourned for seven hundred and thirty days.
"You left me alone, David," I said, my voice cracking with built-up pain. "I held a empty casket. I cried myself to sleep for months. I worked seventy-hour weeks at the hospital, terrified every single night that I wouldn't be able to buy milk or diapers for our son. You took away my choice to stand by your side."
"I know," he sobbed, hanging his head. "I was a coward. I was so afraid of them hurting you that I became the monster who hurt you instead."
"You were," I agreed coldly. "And I don't know if I can ever fully forgive you for that."
David flinched as if I had struck him.
"But," I continued, reaching out to gently tilt his chin up so he had to look me in the eye, "Logan deserves a father. And despite everything... I still love the stupid, foolish man who wrote a birthday card to his son from the shadows."
David let out a broken gasp, pulling me into his arms and weeping openly into my shoulder. I held him tightly, letting my own tears fall, feeling the warm, living heartbeat against his chest. He wasn't a memory anymore. He was real.
Alessandro walked over, reaching into his pocket. He held out his hand, palm up.
Lying in his palm was the plain white gold wedding ring, miraculously undamaged, shining through the dust.
"I believe this belongs to you, Winters," Alessandro said quietly.
David looked at the ring, then looked up at the man who had kept his dangerous secret for two long years. He took the ring, sliding it slowly onto his left ring finger. It fit perfectly, scratches and all.
"Thank you, Alessandro," David whispered.
"Don't thank me yet," Alessandro replied, his eyes narrowing slightly as he checked his ringing satellite phone. He answered it, listened for three seconds, and his expression instantly hardened into stone.
"What is it?" Nicholas asked, stepping forward.
May you like
Alessandro slowly lowered the phone, looking directly at me with an expression that sent a fresh wave of ice straight into my veins.
"Erica Molina just called from the hospital," Alessandro said, his voice deadly quiet. "Two armed men posing as federal marshals just walked into the employee childcare unit... and took Logan."
