Chapter 13 - THE PHANTOM'S RETURN

The leather-bound notebook felt heavy in David’s hands, like a piece of lead carrying the weight of a past that refused to stay buried.
"David..." I whispered, my voice trembling as I looked from the photograph to the peaceful lawn where Logan was playing. "That's impossible. We saw the warehouse caving in. Nicholas said Vance was buried under tons of concrete!"
"Nicholas believed Vance was inside," Alessandro said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped closer, staring at the photo in David’s hands with dark, reawakened fury. "Vance was a master of misdirection. He never stood in the front lines unless he had an exit strategy."
David flipped open the yellowed pages of the notebook.
It wasn't a ledger. It was a journal.
Written in meticulous, hand-drawn diagrams and encrypted numerical sequences were dates stretching back thirty years—tracing every major financial transaction, assassination, and political compromise executed by the syndicate across three continents.
On the very last page, written in fresh ink beneath the latest entry dated just four days ago, was a message addressed directly to David:
You thought you cut off the head of the snake, little accountant. But your father built a hydra. Meet me at the Old Custom House in Baltimore on midnight of the solstice, or the video of your son's actual birth mother will be released to every media outlet in the world.
The terrace went dead quiet.
I froze. The cup in my hand shook violently, lemonade spilling over the armrest.
"My... my what?" I gasped, turning slowly to face David, my mind spinning into a vortex of sheer confusion and horror. "What does he mean... Logan's actual birth mother?!"
David looked at me, horror and profound guilt warring in his eyes. He couldn't look me in the face. He lowered his head, his hands trembling as he closed the notebook.
"David..." I stepped toward him, my voice cracking, tears instantly flooding my eyes. "David, look at me! What is he talking about?! I gave birth to Logan! I was in that hospital room! I labored for fourteen hours! What is Vance talking about?!"
"Cathy..." David choked out, a tear spilling down his scarred cheek. "Four years ago... before the audit... before the car crash... you were told you couldn't conceive."
A cold, paralyzing numbness crept up my spine.
"No..." I whispered, backing away from him, shaking my head frantically. "No, no, no! We went to the fertility clinic! We had the treatments! Dr. Aris Thorne said the protocol worked! I carried Logan for nine months!"
"Dr. Thorne was funded by Romano Maritime's private medical research division," Alessandro revealed softly, his voice heavy with a profound, bitter shame. "Catherine... four years ago, when you were admitted for the procedure, your embryo failed. David was devastated. He knew how much you wanted a child... how much your heart was breaking."
I stared at Alessandro, then at David, feeling as if the ground beneath my feet had vanished into a bottomless abyss.
"So what did you do?" I screamed, my voice echoing across the quiet waters of Lake Como, startling the puppy on the lawn. "WHAT DID YOU DO, DAVID?!"
"A surrogate..." David sobbed, falling to his knees on the stone terrace, burying his face in his hands. "Vance's network found a surrogate... a young woman in Philadelphia who was carrying a viable embryo from our genetic line. Dr. Thorne implanted the growing fetal tissue during your emergency procedure while you were under anesthesia. You carried him, Cathy! You nourished him! He is biologically yours! But... but the legal birth mother listed on the initial hospital intake form was the surrogate."
"Who was she?" I whispered, my heart breaking into a million jagged pieces as I looked at my three-year-old boy running on the grass, oblivious to the monstrous lies surrounding his existence. "Who was the surrogate, David?!"

David raised his head, his face pale, his eyes hollowed out by the terrible truth he had kept hidden for four long years.
"Her name was Sarah Vance," David whispered. "Victor Vance's daughter."
