Chapter 5 - Unraveling Vanessa's Web

By Friday morning, the scandal surrounding Ethan and Vanessa had erupted into a full-scale media storm within the local Columbus business community. The arrest of Gregory Myers, the corrupt loan officer, sent shockwaves through First National Bank, prompting an internal audit that revealed a sprawling network of fraudulent commercial transactions executed by Apex Horizon LLC.
I sat in Nina’s living room, surrounded by printed emails, corporate filings, and bank ledgers. Lily was sleeping peacefully in her bassinet near the window, oblivious to the war being waged to protect her future.
“Look at this, Claire,” Nina said, highlighting a string of transactions on her laptop screen. “Ethan wasn’t just stealing your mom’s house to fund an affair or buy expensive suits. His medical equipment firm, Holloway MedTech, was practically insolvent.”
“Insolvent?” I echoed, setting down my tea. “Ethan always said sales were through the roof. He bought a new Audi six months ago!”
“It was all an illusion,” Nina revealed, turning the screen toward me. “He was falsifying sales reports to keep his board of directors happy. When his primary supplier in Germany threatened to cut off shipments due to unpaid invoices, Ethan panicked. He needed $300,000 immediately to cover the shortfall, or the company would have gone into forced liquidation.”
“And that’s when Vanessa stepped in,” I realized, the pieces of the puzzle finally locking together.
“Exactly,” Nina confirmed. “Vanessa wasn’t just his mistress; she was his financial architect. She knew your mother held sole ownership of a home worth over $400,000 with zero mortgage debt. She targeted your mother because she was vulnerable, recovering from surgery, and trusted Ethan implicitly.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine. The betrayal was so calculated, so predatory, that it made me sick to my stomach. Every romantic dinner, every gentle touch, every promise Ethan had made me over the past year had been a lie designed to keep me docile while he orchestrated the financial execution of my family.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was an urgent call from Detective Reed.
“Claire,” Reed’s voice was tense. “We have a situation. A judge just issued arrest warrants for Ethan Holloway and Vanessa Cole for grand theft, forgery, and federal wire fraud.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Did you arrest them?”
“We picked up Vanessa at her apartment an hour ago,” Reed said. “She’s currently in holding. But Ethan... Ethan slipped away. When officers arrived at his hotel, his room was cleared out. He cut off his GPS ankle monitor from the civil restraining order and fled.”
Panicked fear gripped my chest. “He’s on the run?”
“We believe so,” Reed said grimly. “We’ve alerted local police, state troopers, and airport security. But I want you to listen to me carefully, Claire. Ethan is desperate. A desperate man with nothing left to lose is dangerous. I’m sending two uniformed officers to stake out your house immediately.”
“I’m at Nina’s house right now,” I said, my voice trembling.
“Stay there,” Reed ordered. “Don’t go home, don’t answer calls from unknown numbers, and keep your doors locked. We will track him down.”
I hung up the phone, my hands shaking uncontrollably. Nina looked at me with deep concern. “What did he say?”
“Ethan ran,” I whispered, turning to look at Lily in her bassinet. “The police can’t find him.”
Just as Nina rushed over to double-lock her front door, my phone screen lit up with a text message from a new, untraceable number.
“You took everything from me, Claire. My career, my reputation, my freedom. Now I’m going to take the only thing you care about.”
Attached to the message was a photograph.

It was a live picture taken from across the street—showing Nina’s house, her front porch, and the exact window where Lily’s bassinet was standing.
Ethan wasn’t fleeing the state. He was standing right outside.
