Chapter 13 - The Chicago Paper Trail

Within twelve hours of Diana Cole’s phone call, our office transformed into a command center. Daniel Brooks arrived with two specialized cyber-forensic investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, while Nina sat alongside them, cross-referencing every corporate transaction connected to FinTech Alliance over the past five years.
The rain outside hammered against our office windows, matching the relentless tempo of keystrokes echoing through the room.
“She was smart,” Special Agent Ramirez explained, projecting a complex digital flow chart onto the wall screen. “Diana Cole didn't just hack your foundation’s escrow. She created a mirror account using your foundation’s tax identification number six months ago. She was slowly accumulating small, untraceable micro-transactions—pennies at a time—from hundreds of our client restitution payments.”
“How much total has she siphoned?” I asked, standing beside Daniel with a mug of black coffee.
“So far? Nearly $600,000,” Agent Ramirez revealed. “She was waiting for the foundation’s national launch to frame you for grand embezzling. If she had initiated the public leak tomorrow as planned, federal regulators would have frozen your foundation, arrested your board, and seized your mother’s house as potential proceeds of crime.”
My mother, who had brought lunch for the team and was sitting in the corner cradling Lily, let out a soft gasp. “She wanted to do to Claire what Ethan tried to do to me.”
“Exactly,” Daniel Brooks agreed, his expression dark. “It’s a classic framing operation designed to destroy credibility before a defense can even be mounted. But Diana made one fatal assumption.”
I turned to Daniel. “What’s that?”
“She assumed you were working alone,” Daniel smiled faintly. “She didn't realize that every dollar entering the Margaret Vance Foundation passes through Nina’s multi-tiered secondary audit system.”
Nina spun her chair around with a triumphant grin. “When Diana authorized that $45,000 transfer yesterday, she fell right into my honeypot trap. I didn't try to block the transfer, Claire. I let it go through—but I embedded a hidden tracking protocol inside the data packet.”
“Where is the money right now?” I asked, stepping closer to the screen.
“It didn't go to Grand Cayman,” Nina revealed, typing rapidly on her keyboard. “The Cayman server was just a proxy jump. The money was routed directly into a private commercial escrow account registered to a real estate development firm in downtown Chicago—’Lakeshore Apex Development LLC’.”
My eyes narrowed as I recognized the naming convention. “Apex. The same name Ethan used for his shell company.”
“Because it’s the same legal entity,” Agent Ramirez interjected, pulling up a state registration document. “Lakeshore Apex is co-owned by Arthur Vance and Diana Cole. They didn't just want to destroy you, Claire. They were using your foundation’s capital to complete an illegal land acquisition in Illinois before Vance’s appeal trial begins next month.”
The full horror of their plot was laid bare. Arthur Vance, operating from house arrest, was using Diana Cole’s technological expertise to execute a massive revenge scheme that would simultaneously fund his legal defense and ruin my life.
“Agent Ramirez,” I said, looking the FBI agent straight in the eye. “Is this enough for an emergency arrest warrant?”
“It’s enough for a federal raid,” Ramirez answered, closing his laptop with a decisive snap. “We’re coordinating with the Northern District of Illinois right now. SWAT units will be at Lakeshore Apex’s headquarters within two hours.”
“I’m coming with you to Chicago,” I said immediately.
“Claire, no,” my mother urged gently, stepping forward. “It’s too dangerous.”

“Mom, I spent nine years letting men like Ethan and Vance hide behind lawyers and curtain walls while they dismantled our lives,” I said softly, taking her hand. “I’m not sitting in Columbus waiting for a phone call. I’m going to stand right there when the handcuffs go on.”
Daniel Brooks clapped a hand onto my shoulder. “I’ll book the private charter flight. Let’s go finish this.”
