Chapter 14 - Ambush at Lakeshore Apex

Z
The sky over Chicago was a heavy, bruised purple when our charter plane touched down at Midway International Airport. A convoy of three unmarked federal vehicles met us on the tarmac, escorting Daniel Brooks, Agent Ramirez, and me directly toward the financial district near Michigan Avenue.
The headquarters of Lakeshore Apex Development occupied the thirty-second floor of a glass skyscraper overlooking Lake Michigan. Rain sleeted off the windows, blurring the city lights below into brilliant streaks of gold and red.
Inside the building’s main lobby, six heavily armed federal agents assembled near the elevator bank. The lead agent gave Ramirez a sharp nod.
“The search warrant is signed,” the agent confirmed. “Target one, Diana Cole, is currently inside the executive suite. Target two, Arthur Vance, was tracked entering the building forty minutes ago in direct violation of his house arrest conditions.”
“Move in,” Ramirez ordered.
We stepped into the high-speed elevator. The ascent was silent, marked only by the flashing digital floor counter: 10... 20... 30... 32.
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime.
The reception area of Lakeshore Apex was sleek, opulent, and lit by warm recessed LEDs. Beyond a glass partition, two figures stood over an mahogany desk covered in dual-monitor setups and stacks of offshore banking ledgers.
Arthur Vance, wearing a sharp gray suit with an ankle monitor hidden beneath his trousers, was frantically shoving hard drives into a leather briefcase. Standing beside him was Diana Cole—a tall, polished woman with sharp facial features and eyes as cold as flint.
“Set up the scrub protocol now, Diana!” Vance shouted, his voice echoing through the glass wall. “If the feds trace that wire, we have less than twenty minutes!”
“Relax, Arthur,” Diana replied coolly, her fingers flying across her mechanical keyboard. “The audit trail on Claire Vance’s foundation is already hard-coded. By the time they analyze the drive, she’ll be in federal custody in Ohio.”
BANG!
The heavy double doors were kicked open as federal agents breached the suite, weapons raised.
“FBI! Don’t move! Hands where we can see them!” Agent Ramirez yelled, his voice thunderous.
Vance gasped, dropping his leather briefcase onto the floor. The hard drives tumbled across the polished marble, spilling sensitive financial records across the room. He raised his hands instantly, his face draining of all color.
Diana Cole, however, did not panic. She froze for a fraction of a second, her hands hovering above the keyboard, before reaching swiftly toward a small red toggle button on the side of her terminal—a physical kill-switch designed to wipe her local servers permanently.
“Don’t touch that button, Diana!” I called out, stepping out from behind the tactical team into the center of the room.
Diana stopped, her eyes shifting from the red button to my face. A look of absolute disbelief crossed her expression, followed quickly by a sneer of pure venom.
“Claire Vance,” Diana whispered, her voice trembling with hatred. “You actually dragged yourself all the way from your little suburban office.”
“I came to make sure you didn't press that button,” I said, taking two deliberate steps toward her. “Because if you wipe those drives, you won't just face wire fraud—you’ll face twenty years for obstruction of justice and federal racketeering.”
“You think you’ve won?” Diana laughed, a bitter, hysterical sound. “You’re nothing! A small-town mother who got lucky because my idiot sister and Ethan Holloway were too stupid to cover their tracks!”
“Your sister was a thief, Diana,” I said softly, my voice calm and unshakable. “Ethan was a liar. And you’re just another coward hiding behind a computer screen trying to steal what isn't yours.”
Agent Ramirez stepped forward, grabbing Diana’s arms and pinning them behind her back with a metallic click of handcuffs.
“Diana Cole, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate sabotage,” Ramirez declared, forcing her away from the computer terminal.
Two other agents handcuffed Arthur Vance, who collapsed into a nearby leather chair, weeping quietly as he realized his legal career, his appeal, and his freedom were gone forever.
I walked over to the terminal, where Nina’s embedded tracking protocol was flashing brightly on the primary monitor: MATCH CONFIRMED. ASSETS LOCATED.
I picked up Vance’s dropped briefcase, handed it to Agent Ramirez, and turned to look at Diana as she was pushed toward the door.

“Tell Vanessa I said hello,” I said quietly.
Diana glared at me with pure, unadulterated rage, but offered no response as she was escorted into the waiting elevator.
