Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Rekindling the Light
Alejandro carried Elena upstairs himself, bypassing the guest quarters and taking her straight to the grand master suite.
It was the exact same room where he had kept her favorite perfumes, her half-read books, and her hairbrush untouched on the vanity. Everything was perfectly preserved, exactly as it had been the afternoon she went missing. He had never stopped waiting for her.
While a private physician examined Elena’s malnourished and exhausted body, Alejandro stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the roaring storm. Guilt was tearing him apart from the inside out. While he had spent millions flying to different continents following false leads, she had been suffering right under his nose, a mere few yards away, hidden in the servant quarters of his own home.
Hours later, Elena woke up slowly. The rain had finally ceased, and the room was bathed in the soft, warm amber glow of dawn.
Alejandro was still sitting right beside her bed. He hadn't slept. He hadn't moved. He was simply watching her breathe, terrified that if he closed his eyes, she would vanish again.
Elena looked at him in the quiet light. “Did you really look for me all this time?”
Alejandro gently took her hand, lifting it to his lips to kiss her scarred fingers. “I hired elite investigative firms in eight different countries,” his voice cracked heavily. “I bought out entire private security agencies just to gain unauthorized access to classified international flight logs. I never stopped, Elena. Not for a single day.”
Elena’s eyes filled with fresh tears. “I thought you didn't love me anymore... I thought I was easily replaced.”
Alejandro shook his head fiercely, burying his face in her palm. “Elena… you were this home. Without you, it was just a mausoleum.”
The thick wall of grief between them began to melt, replaced by a warmth they hadn't felt in years. Then, she asked the one question that terrified her the most. “Why did you never try to move on with Vivian?”
Alejandro offered a devastatingly sad smile. “Because nobody else had your laugh. Nobody else was you.”
That was all she needed to hear. Elena threw her arms around his neck, weeping openly against his chest, and Alejandro held her tightly—like a man who had finally recovered the missing half of his soul.
The subsequent months completely dismantled the high society they once knew. The international police investigation uncovered a massive, corrupted medical black-market ring operating out of Eastern Europe, financed by several high-ranking, rogue corporate executives. Multiple doctors were stripped of their licenses and arrested. Crucially, two of Alejandro’s former business rivals were indicted for orchestrating Elena's kidnapping to force Alejandro into a state of emotional and financial ruin.
Vivian Moretti vanished entirely from high society. Her name was scrubbed from charity boards, the invitations stopped arriving, and the luxurious lifestyle she had tried to steal collapsed within weeks. Confronted with conspiracy and asset-theft charges, she fled the country, hunted by Interpol.
But Alejandro no longer wasted a single thought on her. Elena was back.
Slowly, the grand mansion began to breathe again. The manicured gardens were illuminated at night, music drifted through the grand hallways, and fresh flowers bloomed on every terrace. For the first time in his career, Alejandro stopped working past midnight.
One warm afternoon, months later, Elena was walking barefoot through the sprawling estate gardens, the golden hour sun casting a radiant halo around her. Alejandro watched her from the terrace. She wore a simple white sundress, completely devoid of heavy jewelry or billionaire opulence. And yet, she remained the most breathtakingly beautiful woman he had ever seen.
Elena looked up, catching his gaze, and smiled softly. “What are you doing standing up there all by yourself?”
Alejandro walked down the marble steps slowly. When he reached her, he gently pressed his forehead against hers, breathing her in.

“Learning how to live again,” he murmured.
Elena closed her eyes. And for the first time since that terrible night three years ago, she finally felt entirely safe.
