Chapter 8 - Serena’s Last Gamble

Elena did not scream.
She did not run.
For one terrifying second, she simply stood in the dark hallway, staring at Serena through the camera feed.
Then every instinct inside her turned toward the child growing beneath her heart.
She pressed the emergency button beside the alarm panel.
The signal went directly to Adrian’s security team.
Serena knocked again.
This time, harder.
“Elena,” she called through the door. “I know you’re in there.”
Elena’s hand shook as she reached for her phone.
She called Adrian.
He answered before the first ring fully ended.
“Elena?”
“Serena is outside.”
The silence on the line lasted less than a second.
“Lock yourself in the bedroom.”
“She has a gun.”
“I’m on my way. Marcus is two minutes out. Do not open the door.”
Serena’s voice rose outside.
“I’m not here to hurt you!”
Elena almost laughed.
There was something cruel about that sentence coming from a woman holding a weapon at her front door.
“You took everything from me,” Serena shouted.
Elena forced herself to breathe steadily.
“You did that yourself.”
The porch light flickered.
Then Serena slammed her hand against the door.
“You don’t understand! Adrian was supposed to be mine. My father promised me I would never be alone.”
Elena moved toward the bedroom but stopped halfway down the hall.
Part of her wanted to hide.
The wiser part begged her to.
But another part—the part that had spent years swallowing her own voice—refused to be frightened into silence again.
“You were never alone, Serena,” Elena said through the door. “You had people who cared about you. You just wanted to own someone who never belonged to you.”
Serena went quiet.
Then Elena heard a sob.
“I loved him.”
“You loved what he made you feel,” Elena replied. “Safe. Important. Powerful.”
“You don’t know anything about me.”
“No,” Elena said. “But I know what it feels like to make someone else the center of your life until you forget who you are.”
Her own words hit deep.
For years, Elena had done exactly that with Adrian.
She had bent herself around his world, convincing herself that patience was devotion and silence was strength.
But silence had almost cost her everything.
Outside, Serena’s voice softened.
“I didn’t mean for Vincent to hurt you.”
“But you gave him the information.”
“I thought he would scare Adrian. I thought Adrian would come back to me.”
Elena closed her eyes.
There it was.
The ugly truth.
Serena had not wanted Adrian dead.
She had wanted him desperate.
She had wanted him to need her.
“You don’t get to destroy people because you’re lonely,” Elena said.
A car door slammed outside.
Then another.
Marcus’s voice came through the loudspeaker from somewhere beyond the porch.
“Serena Hart. Put down the weapon and step away from the house.”
Serena panicked.
Elena heard her footsteps move quickly across the porch.
Then the front door lock rattled.
“She’s trying to get in,” Elena whispered into the phone.
“Get to the bedroom now,” Adrian ordered.
Elena moved.
She had almost reached the door when glass shattered behind her.
Serena had fired through the front window.
Elena screamed and ducked.
The next sound was louder than the gunshot.
Adrian’s voice.
“Serena!”
He must have arrived through the back entrance.
Elena turned.
Adrian stood at the end of the hallway, rain dripping from his coat, his weapon lowered but ready. Serena had entered through the broken front window and stood frozen near the living room.
Her gun was pointed toward Adrian.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Serena’s eyes filled with tears.
“You came,” she whispered.
Adrian looked at her with a sadness Elena had never seen before.
“I came because you are holding a gun near my family.”
“You would have come for me once.”
“Yes,” Adrian said. “But not because I loved you the way you wanted. I came because I felt responsible for you.”
Serena’s hand trembled.
“I could have been your wife.”
“No.”
The word was quiet.
Final.
Serena looked as if he had struck her.
“No,” Adrian repeated. “You could have been someone I cared for. Someone I protected. But you were never going to be Elena.”
Elena held her breath.
Adrian took one careful step forward.
“And you were never supposed to become my punishment for refusing you.”
Serena’s face crumpled.
Then she turned the gun toward herself.
Elena gasped.
Adrian did not rush her.
He spoke slowly.
“Serena, look at me.”
Her eyes lifted.
“You still have a choice,” he said. “For once, make one that is yours. Not your father’s. Not mine. Not Vincent Moretti’s.”
The gun shook violently in Serena’s hand.
“You don’t know who I am without all of this.”
“Yes, you do,” Elena said softly.
Serena looked at her.
“You are someone who is hurting. But hurting people does not have to become who you are.”
For several seconds, only the rain could be heard.
Then Serena dropped the gun.
Marcus’s team entered immediately.
They restrained her carefully as she began sobbing uncontrollably.
Adrian stood still.
He did not go to Serena.
He did not comfort her.
Instead, he turned toward Elena.
His face was pale with fear.
“Are you okay?”
Elena nodded, though tears were running down her cheeks.
Adrian walked toward her slowly, stopping close enough for her to feel his warmth.
“Can I touch you?” he asked.
The question broke something open inside her.
Not because it was romantic.
Because it was different.
Because he had asked.
Elena nodded.
Adrian wrapped his arms around her carefully, one hand protecting the back of her head, the other resting gently against her stomach.
For the first time in years, Elena let herself cry against his chest.
Not because she was weak.
May you like
But because she no longer had to be strong alone.
