Chapter 3 - A Dangerous Offer

Z
Elena did not sleep that night.
She sat at the kitchen table with her laptop open, staring at the email from Moretti Holdings until the letters blurred.
The offer was professionally written. Too professional.
A first-class flight to New York. A suite at a five-star hotel. A consulting fee that was nearly triple her current rate. A request for a confidential review of a real estate acquisition involving several waterfront properties.
Everything about it was tempting.
Everything about it was wrong.
At 2:14 a.m., Elena forwarded the email to Claire with one message.
Tell me I’m not overreacting.
Claire replied within seconds.
You are absolutely not overreacting. Don’t answer them.
Elena leaned back in her chair and pressed a hand over her stomach.
Her baby shifted faintly beneath her palm.
It was still strange to think of herself as someone’s mother. She had spent so much of her life taking care of Adrian’s world, Adrian’s people, Adrian’s emergencies.
Now there was someone who depended on her completely.
And she needed to make better choices.
By morning, Elena had decided she would decline the offer.
But before she could respond, another email arrived.
This one came from a private address.
No company logo.
No signature.
Just a single line.
Your husband cannot protect you from the consequences of his choices.
Elena’s fingers froze over the keyboard.
Her first instinct was to call Adrian.
The thought alone made her angry.
Why should she call him? Why should she need him now, after he had made it painfully clear that Serena’s emergencies mattered more than the family they were supposed to be building?
Still, fear had a way of stripping pride down to survival.
Elena reached for her phone.
Then stopped.
Instead, she called Marcus Reed.
He answered on the second ring.
“Mrs. Vale.”
“Don’t call me that.”
A brief pause.
“Elena.”
“I got an email from Moretti Holdings.”
Marcus went silent.
Then his voice changed. Lower. Sharper.
“Forward it to me immediately.”
“I also received another message.”
“Forward that too.”
“You already knew someone was watching me.”
It was not a question.
Marcus exhaled slowly.
“Yes.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“You knew, and nobody told me.”
“I was trying to assess the threat before alarming you.”
“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.”
“No,” Marcus said quietly. “You’re right.”
His answer surprised her.
For years, Marcus had been the only person in Adrian’s circle who treated her like something more than a beautiful wife who made the room look softer. He listened when she spoke. He remembered details.
But he was still Adrian’s man.
And that made trust complicated.
“Is Adrian behind this?” Elena asked.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Marcus sounded certain.
“Elena, Adrian is furious. But he is not targeting you. He would never authorize anyone to frighten you.”
The words should have comforted her.
Instead, they made her chest ache.
Because somewhere beneath the betrayal, she still believed that too.
Adrian would never physically hurt her.
But he had broken her heart so carelessly that the distinction felt almost meaningless.
Later that afternoon, Adrian arrived outside Elena’s house alone.
No security detail.
No black SUV.
No men in suits standing near the curb.
Just Adrian, leaning against a dark sedan with both hands in his coat pockets.
Elena saw him through the front window.
For one dangerous moment, everything inside her wanted to run outside.
To scream at him.
To ask why Serena had mattered more.
To let him hold her and tell her this had all been a mistake.
But then she remembered the ring on the dresser.
The note.
The silence after he left.
She opened the door but did not step outside.
Adrian looked at her stomach first.
It was subtle, but Elena saw it.
His expression changed.
Something shattered behind his eyes.
“You’re showing,” he said.
Elena’s voice stayed calm. “That’s generally what happens when someone is pregnant.”
“I know.”
“You didn’t seem to know much that night.”
Adrian flinched.
He deserved it.
“I came to warn you,” he said. “Vincent Moretti is making moves. He knows you left. He knows about the baby.”
“How?”
“We’re finding out.”
“No. You’re finding out. I’m just trying to survive the mess created by your life.”
“My life?” Adrian stepped closer, then stopped himself. “Elena, this is not your fault.”
“No, Adrian. It’s yours.”
His face tightened.
“You brought Serena into our marriage. You brought your enemies into our home. You made me feel like I had to disappear just to be heard.”
“I never—”
“You did.” Her voice cracked for the first time. “Maybe you didn’t mean to. But you did.”
Adrian stared at her.
The man who could make senators nervous and competitors panic had no answer for his wife standing in a doorway.
Finally, he said, “I made a mistake.”
Elena laughed once, bitterly.
“You didn’t make a mistake. You made a choice.”
The words landed hard.
Adrian looked down at the ground.
“I’m asking you to let me protect you.”
“I don’t need your protection. I need honesty.”
“You’ll have it.”
“Then tell me the truth about Serena.”
Adrian looked up.
For the first time, Elena saw fear in him.
Not fear of Moretti.
Fear of losing her completely.
“Serena is not just an old friend,” he said.
Elena felt the world go still.
“She knows things about my family,” Adrian continued. “Things that could destroy people. Her father worked with my father years ago. When he died, Serena became my responsibility.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed.
“Your responsibility?”
“I should have told you.”
“Yes. You should have.”
“She has been using that connection to control me.”
“And you let her.”
Adrian had no defense.
Before Elena could say anything else, a black SUV sped down the street.
It stopped in front of the house.
Two men jumped out.
Adrian moved instantly, pulling Elena behind him as gunfire shattered the front window.

And in that terrifying second, Elena realized she had never truly escaped Adrian Vale’s world.
