Chapter 15 - The Trial of Adrian Vale

Z
The trial began in September.
By then, the city had become obsessed with the Vale family scandal.
News vans lined the courthouse steps each morning. Reporters shouted questions at Adrian whenever he arrived. Protesters held signs demanding justice for victims of the old Vale network.
Some believed Adrian was a hero for exposing the truth.
Others believed he was simply a wealthy man trying to survive the fall of his own dynasty.
Elena understood why people were skeptical.
Trust was not restored because someone made one good decision.
It was restored because they kept making good decisions when no one was applauding.
Adrian testified for six hours on the first day.
He spoke about the businesses his father built through illegal partnerships. He named the people who accepted bribes. He described the systems that had allowed corruption to hide behind legitimate companies.
And then he spoke about his mother.
The courtroom became silent as Adrian’s voice broke.
“I spent most of my life believing she died in an accident,” he said. “I built my identity around my father’s legacy because I thought it was all I had left of her.”
He looked toward the jury.
“But the truth is, my mother was not weak. She was not careless. She was brave enough to stand against a man everyone else feared.”
Elena sat behind him, holding Livia in her lap.
Their daughter was older now, restless and curious. She played quietly with a wooden toy while Elena watched Adrian tell the truth that had haunted him for decades.
“I cannot bring my mother back,” Adrian continued. “I cannot erase what my family did. But I can refuse to protect it any longer.”
When court ended, Adrian found Elena waiting in a private hallway.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Elena stepped forward and hugged him.
He held her tightly.
“I thought I would feel relieved,” he whispered.
“You may not for a while.”
“I feel empty.”
“That’s because you spent years carrying something that was never supposed to belong to you.”
Adrian pulled back and looked at her.
“You always know what to say.”
“No,” Elena replied. “I just know what it feels like to carry someone else’s damage until you forget where it ends and you begin.”
The trial continued for three weeks.
Marcus testified too.
He revealed the documents his father had hidden and admitted his own failures—the things he had overlooked while working inside Adrian’s organization.
His honesty cost him.
He lost old professional relationships.
People questioned his loyalty.
But he accepted it without complaint.
“I spent too long confusing loyalty with silence,” Marcus said on the witness stand. “They are not the same thing.”
Vincent Moretti’s former associates began turning against one another.
Bank accounts were frozen.
Politicians resigned.
Executives were arrested.
The empire Richard Vale built did not collapse in one dramatic explosion.
It dissolved piece by piece, under the weight of truth.
Then, on the final day of testimony, Elena received a call from Claire.
“Don’t panic,” Claire said.
Elena immediately panicked.
“What happened?”
“It’s Livia. She’s okay. But she has a fever, and the daycare called me because I was listed as backup.”
Elena was already grabbing her coat.
“I’m coming.”
Adrian was due back in court in twenty minutes.
For the old Adrian, court would have come first. The trial. The headlines. The legal strategy.
But when Elena called him, he answered immediately.
“Livia has a fever.”
“I’m leaving now.”
“You have to testify again.”
“I don’t care.”
“Adrian—”
“I said I’m leaving.”
He arrived at the pediatric clinic before Elena did.
Livia sat on his lap, sleepy and flushed, her small fingers tangled in his tie.
When Elena walked in, Adrian looked up.
“She’s okay,” he said. “The doctor thinks it’s an ear infection.”
Elena exhaled in relief.
Then she looked at his watch.
“You missed court.”
“I told them my daughter needed me.”
For a second, the world became very quiet.
Not because it was a grand gesture.
Because it was exactly the kind of small choice Elena once believed he would never make.
She sat beside him and rested her head against his shoulder.
“You chose her,” Elena whispered.
Adrian kissed the top of her head.
“There was never another choice.”
Two days later, the verdict came.
Vincent Moretti was found guilty on every major charge.
Several members of Richard Vale’s old network were convicted or placed under federal investigation.
Serena accepted a plea agreement, providing evidence in exchange for a reduced sentence and mandatory psychiatric treatment.
Adrian faced no criminal charges related to his father’s crimes, though he accepted financial penalties and years of oversight tied to his former companies.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
One shouted, “Mr. Vale, do you still consider yourself the head of the Vale empire?”
Adrian looked toward Elena, who stood a few feet away with Livia in her arms.
Then he turned back to the cameras.
“No,” he said.
“Then who are you now?”
Adrian paused.
For the first time, he did not seem afraid of the answer.

“I’m a man trying to be worthy of the family waiting for me at home.”
