Chapter 9

Chapter 9 - THE CODE DECRYPTED The trial of Carter Sterling was the most televised legal battle in modern American history. For three weeks, the court was presented with undeniable, encrypted evidence. Jonah’s meticulous security logs, combined with Maya’s brilliant deconstruction of the Aegis software, left Carter’s high-priced defense attorneys with nowhere to hide.
But the final nail in the coffin was the domestic abuse charges.
The prosecution presented the medical records from the rural Oregon clinic, showing the faint, residual bruising on Maya’s face and wrists that had been documented by a suspicious but silent nurse during her delivery. Combined with the security footage Maya had extracted from the Los Altos estate before her escape, the image of the "perfect tech philanthropist" was completely demolished.
On the final day of the trial, the courtroom was packed. Carter sat at the defense table, handcuffed, his face hollow, his eyes fixed on the floor. He had lost his company, his assets were frozen, and his political allies had abandoned him like rats leaving a sinking ship.
Maya sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a beautiful, simple blue dress. Liam was asleep in Jonah’s arms beside her, his tiny chest rising and falling peacefully.
The judge banged her gavel.
"In the matter of The State of California vs. Carter Sterling, on the counts of domestic assault, corporate fraud, illegal surveillance, and attempted kidnapping, this court finds the defendant guilty on all counts."
A collective breath was released in the courtroom. Reporters began typing furiously on their phones.
"This court sentences Carter Sterling to thirty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, the assets of Aegis Corporation are to be liquidated, with eighty percent of the proceeds directed to a newly established federal foundation for the protection of domestic abuse survivors and digital privacy rights, to be headed by Maya Vance."
Maya closed her eyes, a single tear of relief slipping down her cheek. She felt Jonah’s arm wrap around her shoulder, pulling her close.
"We did it, Maya," Jonah whispered, kissing the top of her head. "It’s finally over."

Maya looked back at Carter as he was led away in chains by federal marshals. He looked small. He looked weak. He was no longer the master of her universe. He was just a man who had built his life on a foundation of fear, only to watch it collapse under the weight of the truth.
As they walked down the courthouse steps, thousands of supporters holding Valkyrie signs cheered their names. Maya looked up at the bright San Francisco sky. The air felt different today. It didn't feel like a prison. It felt like a beginning.
