Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - CORNERED AT THE TECH SUMMIT The San Francisco Convention Center was a fortress of glass, steel, and high-security checkpoints. Over five thousand tech executives, journalists, and government officials packed the main auditorium.Backstage, Carter Sterling adjusted his tie in the mirror. He looked pale, his eyes manic. He had spent the last twenty-four hours hunting a ghost, only for his security team to lose her trail on the Golden Gate Bridge.

"Sir, it’s time," his assistant said nervously. "The press is waiting. The senator is on stage."

"Did you find her?" Carter hissed, grabbing the assistant by his collar. "Did you find the bitch?"

"No, sir! Her car was found abandoned near the marina. We’re searching the perimeter—"

"She’s here," Carter muttered, letting go of the man. "I can feel it. She’s here to ruin me."

He composed himself, plastering on his famous, confident smile, and walked out onto the massive stage. The crowd erupted into applause. High above, massive screens displayed the Aegis logo.

"Thank you," Carter said, his voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Today, we introduce Aegis-V, an AI designed not just to connect our lives, but to protect them. In partnership with federal security agencies, Aegis will become the digital shield of America—"

"A shield built on stolen lives and violence."

The voice didn't come from the stage. It came from the main audio speakers, overriding Carter’s microphone.

The massive projector screens behind Carter suddenly flickered. The presentation slides vanished, replaced by a live video feed.

It was Maya. She was standing in the convention center's main broadcast booth, her face clear, beautiful, and completely devoid of fear. Beside her stood Jonah, his fingers flying across a control console, locking down the building’s security overrides.

The crowd gasped. Murmurs turned into a deafening roar as reporters recognized the "dead" wife of Carter Sterling.

"Maya?" Carter whispered, his face turning an ash-gray color under the stage lights. He stepped toward the edge of the stage, looking around frantically. "Security! Shut down the feed! Arrest her!"

"You can't shut it down, Carter," Maya’s voice echoed, cold and unwavering. "We’re broadcasting this live to fifty million viewers across the Valkyrie network. The world is finally going to see the algorithm of your empire."

On the screens behind him, documents began to scroll.

They were the original source codes showing the backdoors in Aegis. They were the audio recordings of Carter instructing his developers to sell user data to foreign shell companies.

And then, the screen changed to a medical report—the forged psychiatric commitment papers for Maya, signed by a doctor Carter had bribed.

"This man," Maya said, her voice filled with a powerful, emotional resonance, "tried to steal my life. He locked me in a house, he beat me while I was pregnant, and when I tried to leave, he tried to have me committed to a sanitarium so he could steal my father’s legacy and my son. He told the world I died in a tragic accident. But I didn't die. I survived. And I built Valkyrie to set us all free from his surveillance."

"You’re lying!" Carter screamed, losing all control. He ran off the stage, storming toward the broadcast booth, his security team trailing behind him. "You’re a lunatic! I’ll kill you!"

He kicked open the door of the broadcast booth, his face contorted in a murderous rage. He lunged at Maya, his hands reaching for her throat.

May you like

"I should have broken your neck when I had the chance!" Carter roared.

But before he could touch her, Jonah stepped in his path, landing a devastating punch that sent Carter crashing through the glass partition of the booth, landing hard on the concrete floor of the convention center lobby below, right in front of twenty police officers and fifty flashing news cameras.
