Chapter 7 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST The illusion of safety shattered on a Tuesday afternoon.Maya was in the kitchen, blending fresh fruit for Liam, when Jonah burst through the front door of the cabin, his face pale, his chest heaving as if he had run miles.
"We have to go," Jonah gasped, locking the door behind him. "Now, Maya."
"What’s wrong?" Maya asked, her heart dropping into her stomach.
Jonah held up his tablet, showing a localized network scan. "An Aegis corporate transport helicopter just landed at the regional airport thirty miles from here. And someone just ran a targeted satellite sweep of this exact coordinate grid. They didn't find Valkyrie’s servers—they found you. Carter reopened the investigation into your crash. He realized the body in the car was never recovered. He’s traced your father’s land registry."
Maya felt a wave of icy terror wash over her. Her hands began to shake. "He knows. He knows I’m alive."
"He’s coming, Maya," Jonah said, grabbing a duffel bag from the closet and quickly packing Liam’s clothes. "He has a private security force. They don't need a warrant, and they don't care about local police. If they catch us here, they’ll take Liam and make sure we both disappear for real this time."
Suddenly, the high-pitched whine of a drone echoed from outside the cabin.
Maya ran to the window. Hovering just above the pine trees was a sleek, black surveillance drone bearing the Aegis logo. Its camera lens was pointed directly at the cabin, its red recording light blinking like a malevolent eye.
"They’re already here," Maya whispered.
"Get Liam," Jonah commanded, grabbing a shotgun he kept for protection against wild animals. "We take the old sedan. We head south toward San Francisco."
"San Francisco?" Maya gasped, cradling her crying baby tightly in her arms. "That’s where his home turf is! Why would we go there?"
"Because that’s where the Global Tech Summit is tomorrow," Jonah said, his eyes burning with a fierce determination. "Carter is the keynote speaker. He’s going to announce the integration of Aegis with the federal surveillance network. If we try to hide in the woods, he’ll hunt us down like animals. But if we stand in front of the entire world’s media... he can't touch us without exposing his own crimes. We don't hide anymore, Maya. We end this where it started."

They rushed out the back door, the drone buzzing angrily overhead. Jonah fired a single shot from his shotgun, blowing the drone into a cloud of plastic and sparks. They scrambled into the old sedan, the tires spinning in the mud as they roared away from the only peaceful home Maya had ever known.
Behind them, the dark shadows of black SUVs began to emerge from the highway, their headlights cutting through the coastal fog like wolves searching for their prey.
