Chapter 6 - The Breaking Point

Glass showered across the hardwood floor. Instinct took over before fear could paralyze me. I sprinted toward the nursery, scooped Lily out of her crib, and ducked into the master bedroom closet, locking the heavy solid-wood door behind me.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My hands shook violently as I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.
"911, what is your emergency?"
"Someone just broke into my house! 1424 Elm Street! I'm locked in the upstairs closet with my baby!" I whispered frantically into the receiver.
"Officers are on their way, ma'am. Stay on the line."
Outside the closet door, heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway. Glass crunched beneath boots.
"Claire!" a voice screamed.
It wasn't Marcus. It was Nolan.
He sounded completely unhinged, his voice raw and slurred with alcohol.
"Claire! Where are you?! You destroyed my life!" Nolan shouted, slamming his fist against a hallway wall. "The police raided my office! Brooke left me! My business is gone! It was supposed to be between you and Marcus! Why did you bring the feds into this?!"
I held Lily tightly against my chest, covering her tiny ears as she began to wail. "Nolan, stop!" I yelled through the closet door. "The police are already on their way! You're making this ten times worse!"
"It doesn't matter anymore!" Nolan screamed, kicking open the bedroom door. "Marcus told me everything! He said if I took the fall, he'd pay me off! But then you gave my flash drive to the DA! You set me up!"
"Marcus lied to you, Nolan!" I shouted back, trying to keep him talking until the police arrived. "Marcus was going to pin the entire gambling ring on you! He already gave a statement to his lawyer blaming you for all the wire transfers! Check your phone! He threw you under the bus!"
Silence fell over the hallway for a second, punctuated only by Nolan's heavy, ragged breathing.
"He... he wouldn't," Nolan muttered, his voice faltering. "We were brothers."
"He doesn't have brothers, Nolan! He has tools!" I yelled. "He used me, he used you, and when things got hot, he burned us both! Look at his formal defense filing! Sterling claimed you coerced Marcus into signing those transfers!"
I heard Nolan rustling in the dark bedroom, the chime of his phone screen lighting up as he frantically checked his messages or calls. A sudden, feral roar of betrayal burst from his throat.
"That lying bastard!" Nolan shrieked.
Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder with every passing second. Red and blue lights flashed through the bedroom windows, cutting through the darkness.
"Nolan! Police are outside! Put down whatever you're holding and drop to your knees!" an officer shouted through a megaphone outside.
Nolan slammed his hand against the closet door one last time. "You haven't won, Claire! Marcus isn't going to let you walk away from this!"
Footsteps thundered down the stairs as Nolan attempted to flee out the back entrance. Within seconds, the sound of splintering wood and shouted commands echoed from downstairs.
"Police! On the ground! Hands behind your back! Now!"
I sank to the closet floor, my legs completely giving out. Tears finally spilled over my eyelashes, washing away the numb shock that had sustained me for days. I held Lily close, rocking her back and forth in the dark.
Ten minutes later, Elena and Detective Miller breached the bedroom, guiding me and Lily safely out of the house. Nolan was hauled away in handcuffs, screaming curses at Marcus and promising to tell the grand jury every single detail of their illegal enterprise.
As Detective Miller took my statement in the back of an ambulance, my phone chimed with a text message from an unregistered prepaid phone.
You think Nolan was my only play? Check your trust account, Claire. Look at what happens when you cross me.
My blood turned to ice. I immediately opened my banking app, authenticating with my fingerprint.
