Chapter 5 - Bloodlines and Lies

"Your son destroyed his own reputation when he put his hands on me, Evelyn," I replied calmly, setting the phone up against my computer monitor so I could record the call.
Evelyn chuckled—a dry, bitter sound that explained exactly where Marcus had inherited his sociopathic lack of empathy. "Oh, please, Claire. Men lose their tempers. It’s unfortunate, yes, but you provoked him. You’ve always had that arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude. You made him feel small in his own home."
"It was my home," I corrected. "Paid for by my family trust. Marcus didn't contribute a single dollar."
"Marcus is the father of your child!" Evelyn snapped, her composure slipping. "Do you really want Lily growing up knowing her father went to prison? Do you want her carrying that stain? Think about her future, Claire! If you press these charges and destroy Marcus's career, I will ensure you never see a dime of family support. I will fund Marcus's legal team until you are bled completely dry!"
"Evelyn," I said softly, leaning closer to the camera. "You seem to be under the impression that I need your money. I am a forensic accountant. I make six figures on my own. My trust is fully protected. Meanwhile, your son just used your family’s credit line to secure a $250,000 bond, which he will forfeit the moment he violates his restraining order."
Evelyn’s face paled slightly, but she quickly pressed on. "We have connections, Claire. Judges, politicians, board members. You are a nobody from an accounting firm. You think your little D.A. sister can protect you from the Vance family name?"
"Your 'Vance family name' is currently attached to an active federal tax evasion investigation," I replied coldly. "I am currently looking at bank records that show Marcus transferred $50,000 of his illegal gambling proceeds into your personal checking account last October. Does the IRS know you're laundering money for your son, Evelyn?"
The silence on the line was absolute. Evelyn stared at me through the screen, her eyes wide with genuine shock and terror.
"You... you're lying," she stuttered, her authoritative demeanor completely collapsing.
"I don't lie about numbers," I said. "I'm sending this flash drive to the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS by noon. If I were you, I would stop worrying about Marcus's bail and start hiring yourself a very good defense attorney."
I ended the call before she could respond.
An hour later, Elena arrived at the house accompanied by Detective Miller, the lead investigator assigned to my domestic violence case. We sat at the dining table, laying out the contents of Nolan’s flash drive alongside my independent audit of Marcus’s accounts.
"This is massive," Detective Miller said, turning through the printed spreadsheets. "This isn't just a domestic abuse case anymore. We're looking at illegal gambling, money laundering, bank fraud, and state tax evasion. Nolan Wright's attorney just reached out to the District Attorney's office offering a full proffer statement."
"What did Nolan tell them?" I asked.
"Nolan confirmed that Marcus orchestrated the entire scheme," Elena explained. "When Marcus realized you were pregnant, he panicked. He knew that a child meant long-term financial accountability. He wanted to build an off-the-books fortune that you couldn't touch in a divorce. He was planning to drain your joint assets, file for sole custody by fabricating evidence of postpartum instability, and force you to pay him spousal support."
A chill ran down my spine. The sheer level of premeditated malice was staggering. Marcus hadn't just snapped four days after I gave birth; he had been calculating my destruction for months.
"Where is Marcus now?" I asked.
"His mother posted his bond an hour ago," Detective Miller sighed. "He's out. He's wearing an ankle monitor, but given the escalation of charges, he's desperate. I’ve posted an extra patrol unit outside your house, Claire."
"He won't come here," I said, looking out the window at the quiet suburban street. "Marcus is a coward. He only attacks when he thinks nobody is watching, and right now, the whole world is watching."
"Never corner a desperate narcissist, Claire," Elena warned softly, putting her hand over mine. "When their fantasy world crumbles, they do crazy things."

Her words proved prophetic sooner than any of us expected.
At 9:00 PM that evening, while I was downstairs preparing a bottle for Lily, the living room window suddenly shattered inward with a deafening crash.
