Chapter 4 - Snakes in the Grass

The security system at my house had been entirely upgraded. High-definition cameras now monitored every square inch of the driveway, perimeter, and entryways. A private security guard sat in a discreet black sedan parked across the street—a precaution funded by my trust that Elena insisted upon.

Inside, the house was silent and pristine. The bloodstains on the hardwood floor had been professionally cleaned while I was in the hospital, and the living room was restored to order. Yet, the ghost of that horrific night lingered in the air.

I sat on the nursery rocking chair, softly nursing Lily. The trauma of the assault still made my hands shake occasionally, but looking down at her innocent, sleeping face grounded me. I wasn't just fighting for my own dignity anymore; I was fighting to protect her from growing up under the shadow of a narcissist.

A soft knock at the front door interrupted the quiet. I checked my phone monitor—it was Brooke, one of the women who had been at the house the night Marcus hit me.

I met her at the front door, leaving the heavy security chain engaged.

"Claire," Brooke said, her voice trembling. She looked exhausted, her eyes rimmed with red. "Please... just give me five minutes. I need to talk to you."

I evaluated her through the narrow gap. Brooke was Nolan’s girlfriend. On the night of the attack, she had lowered her eyes and pretended not to see Marcus slap me to the floor.

"You have two minutes, Brooke," I said coolly, unlatching the chain and stepping back into the foyer, but leaving the heavy door open. "Make it count."

Brooke stepped inside, wringing her hands nervously. "I came to apologize. What Marcus did... what Nolan did... it was horrific. I haven't slept since that night."

"You watched him hit me while I was holding my baby," I said, my voice deadpan. "You drank my wine, sat in my living room, and remained silent while my husband treated me like a slave. Apologies don't fix a ruptured lip, Brooke."

"I know! I know, and I'm so sorry!" Brooke began to cry softly. "I was terrified! Marcus has... he has leverage over everyone, Claire. You don't know what he's like when the doors are closed!"

I narrowed my eyes. "What leverage?"

Brooke took a deep breath, looking around nervously as if Marcus might appear out of the shadows. "Nolan didn't just help Marcus hide $38,000. Marcus has been running an illegal sports gambling ring out of his architectural firm for the past two years. He used Nolan's company to launder the payouts. Nolan owes him over $100,000 in gambling debts. That’s why Nolan did whatever Marcus asked!"

My mind immediately began calculating. Marcus wasn't just a petty thief and an abuser; he was involved in organized illegal gambling.

"Why are you telling me this now?" I asked.

"Because Nolan was arrested this morning," Brooke sobbed. "The police searched our apartment. Marcus told Nolan's lawyer that if Nolan doesn't take the fall for the financial fraud, Marcus will tell the state prosecutors that Nolan was the mastermind behind the entire gambling operation! Marcus is throwing Nolan to the wolves to save himself!"

I stared at her, synthesizing the new information. Marcus was trying to play grandmaster on a chessboard he didn't even understand. He was willing to destroy his best friend to protect his own skin.

"Does Nolan have proof that Marcus ran the operation?" I asked sharply.

"Yes," Brooke said, reaching into her purse and pulling out a silver flash drive. "Nolan kept backups of every text, ledger, and bank transfer. He was scared Marcus would betray him eventually. He told me to give this to you. He wants to make a deal with your sister at the District Attorney's office. He’ll testify against Marcus for domestic abuse and wire fraud if the DA gives him immunity on the gambling charges."

I took the flash drive, feeling the cold metal against my palm. Nolan wasn't acting out of conscience—he was acting out of survival. But in the grand scheme of justice, a rat turning on a snake was precisely what I needed.

"Tell Nolan's lawyer to contact Elena directly," I said. "And Brooke?"

"Yes?" she asked, wiping her tears.

"If you ever come near my house again without an invitation, I'll have you arrested for trespassing. Get out."

Brooke nodded hastily and hurried out the door.

I plugged the flash drive into my laptop. File after file opened up, revealing an intricate, dirty web of illegal wagers, off-the-books cash transfers, and tax evasion spanning three years. Marcus had used his architectural firm as a front, lying on his federal tax returns while spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on high-stakes poker games, luxury cars, and hush money.

My phone rang. It was an encrypted video call from an unlisted number. I answered it, expecting a telemarketer or Sterling.

Instead, Marcus’s mother, Evelyn Vance, appeared on the screen. She was a cold, high-society matriarch who had always treated me like an inferior intruder in her family's pristine social circle.

"Claire," Evelyn said, her tone dripping with fake maternal pity. "I think it's time we put an end to this ridiculous nightmare before you completely destroy my son's reputation."
