Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

The visiting room inside the Los Angeles Federal Holding Center was cold, sterile, and smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant. Fluorescent light bulbs flickered overhead, casting an unhealthy grey glow over the bare concrete walls and the single metal table bolted to the floor.
Spencer Albright sat in a metal chair, his ankles cuffed to the floor bar, his wrists bound by heavy steel chains attached to a leather waist belt. His once-impeccable suit had been replaced by a coarse, oversized orange jumpsuit. His hair was greasy, his eyes were sunken and bloodshot, and a thick stubble covered his pale, drawn face.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Gwen stepped into the room.
She was dressed impeccably in a high-collared cream coat and white trousers, looking entirely out of place in the grim facility. She carried herself with an effortless grace that made the harsh environment seem utterly insignificant around her. Behind her stood Thomas Vance, who took his position near the door with his arms folded across his chest.
Spencer snapped his head up, his eyes widening with a frantic mixture of utter hatred and pathetic hope.
"Gwen!" Spencer shouted, leaning forward as far as his chains would allow, the metal clinking harshly against the table. "Gwen, thank God! You came! You have to talk to your father! You have to get me out of here!"
Gwen walked slowly toward the table, but she did not sit down. She stood over him, looking down at his disheveled appearance with cold detachment.
"Why would I do that, Spencer?" she asked quietly.
"Because we are husband and wife!" Spencer cried out, tears welling in his red-rimmed eyes. "Six years, Gwen! We shared a life! We have a daughter together! You can't just throw me to the wolves like this over a petty fight! I know I made mistakes! I know I was distant, and... and Cassandra was a huge mistake, I admit it! I was stupid! I was seduced by her! But I never stopped caring about you!"
Gwen let out a low, bitter laugh that echoed off the cold concrete walls. "You never stopped caring about me? Spencer, yesterday morning, your mistress slapped our five-year-old child so hard that her milk teeth were knocked onto your marble floor. And your only reaction was to adjust your cufflinks and complain about the blood stain."
Spencer flinched, shrinking back into his chair. "I... I was stressed! The business was under pressure! I wasn't thinking clearly! I would never hurt Hazel! You know that!"
"You allowed her to be hurt every single day," Gwen countered, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You allowed your mother to call her a bastard child behind my back. You allowed Cassandra to treat her like a servant. You restricted my allowance so severely that I had to save pennies just to buy her proper shoes, while you spent forty thousand dollars on champagne for your country club friends."
"I was trying to build an empire for us!" Spencer screamed, his face contorting in rage as his pathetic demeanor shattered. "I was trying to make the Albright name respected! You never supported me! You just sat in that house like a dull, silent ghost! You pretended to be a penniless nobody! You lied to me for six years, Gwen! You tricked me!"
"I didn't lie to you, Spencer," Gwen said calmly. "When I met you six years ago, I was tired of the shallow, predatory world of high finance. I wanted a real life. I wanted to see if a man could love me for who I was, not for my father's billions. I left my family wealth behind completely. I wore simple clothes, lived on a modest budget, and gave you my whole heart."
She stepped closer, resting her fingertips lightly on the cold metal table.
"And what did you do with that heart, Spencer? You saw a quiet woman with no powerful backing, and you decided she was weak. You decided to crush her spirit, bit by bit, to make yourself feel like a big man. You took my silence for stupidity."
"Gwen, please..." Spencer stammered, his rage collapsing once again into sheer terror as he realized the finality in her voice. "My lawyer... the firm I called this morning, they suddenly dropped my case! They said they have a conflict of interest! Did you do that? Please, I can't go to federal prison! I won't survive in there! The other inmates... they know who I am!"
"I bought the firm, Spencer," Gwen revealed softly, offering him a terrible, beautiful smile. "I bought every major criminal defense firm in Southern California this morning. None of them will represent you. You will be assigned a public defender who graduated from law school six months ago and has eighty other active cases on his desk."
Spencer’s mouth opened in horror, but no sound came out.
"And as for your mother," Gwen continued, her tone conversational, "the foreclosure on her Beverly Hills condo was finalized an hour ago. All her jewelry, her designer clothes, and her art collection have been seized to pay off your corporate debts. She is currently staying in a low-cost motel near the airport, crying to anyone who will listen."
"You monster..." Spencer hissed, his voice trembling with pure venom. "You're a monster, Gwen!"
"No, Spencer," Gwen corrected gently, turning her back on him and taking a step toward the exit. "I am simply the woman you created."
"Gwen! Don't leave me! GWEN!" Spencer shrieked, slamming his chained wrists against the heavy metal table as the guards rushed into the room to restrain him. "PLEASE! GWEN! LOOK AT ME!"
Gwen didn't turn back. She walked through the heavy steel door into the bright California sunlight, where Thomas was holding open the rear door of a gleaming white sedan.
As she stepped into the luxury car, her encrypted phone vibrated in her handbag. She pulled it out and answered.
"Gwen," her father's voice came through the speaker, warm and steady. "The media press conference at Crawford Global is starting in ten minutes. Are you ready?"
May you like
Gwen looked out the window at the clear blue sky, feeling the weight of six long years of suffering melt away into absolute freedom.
"I'm ready, Dad," Gwen said softly. "Let's finish this."
