Chapter 3 - The Price of Blood

The air inside the private suite on the top floor of the Grand Pinnacle Hotel smelled of crushed eucalyptus, lavender, and old leather. Soft, warm light poured from recessed gold fixtures, reflecting off the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the vast, glowing grid of Los Angeles. Below them, the city looked small, irrelevant, and silent.
A team of three top pediatric specialists, personally flown in by Samuel Crawford from Johns Hopkins, were quietly completing their examination of little Hazel. The lead physician, a gentle woman with graying hair, stepped away from the plush leather sofa where Hazel was resting comfortably under a knitted cashmere blanket.
Gwen stood near the window, her arms crossed over her chest, watching her daughter with hawkish intensity. Samuel stood beside her, resting both hands on the platinum head of his cane, his face carved out of stone.
"How is she, Dr. Evans?" Gwen asked softly, her voice wavering slightly for the first time all night.
Dr. Evans pulled off her stethoscope and gave Gwen a reassuring, compassionate smile. "Physically, she is stable, Mrs. Crawford. The two teeth she lost were primary milk teeth, fortunately. The tissue around her gum line is lacerated and inflamed, but there is no structural jaw fracture. We’ve applied a localized anti-inflammatory gel and administered a mild, child-safe analgesic. She will be sore for a few days, but she will heal."
Gwen let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders dropping an inch. "And the swelling?"
"The facial trauma will resolve in about a week," Dr. Evans replied, her tone turning slightly grave. "However, the psychological impact of such physical violence, combined with the environment she was subjected to, will require soft care. She is terrified, Mrs. Crawford. She asked me three times if she was going to be punished for bleeding on the floor."
Samuel’s hand tightened around his cane until the wood groaned under the pressure. "Punished..." he repeated, his voice a dangerous murmur. "My granddaughter was afraid of being punished for being assaulted."
"I have already arranged for our family’s top child psychologist to join us tomorrow morning at the estate in Malibu," Samuel said, turning to Gwen. "She will never feel unsafe again, Gwen. I swear it on your mother’s memory."
"Thank you, Dad," Gwen whispered. She walked over to the sofa, knelt down, and softly kissed Hazel’s forehead. The little girl stirred in her sleep, reaching out a tiny, warm hand to clutch Gwen’s thumb. Gwen held it tightly, anchoring herself.
The suite door opened with a quiet click, and Thomas Vance stepped inside. He held a sleek silver tablet in his left hand, his face unreadable.
"Sir, Mrs. Gwen," Thomas spoke quietly, bowing his head. "The situation downstairs has escalated, as expected. The media has picked up the story. The footage of Mr. Albright on his knees outside the hotel is currently trending as the number one news item across all major financial and entertainment networks."
Samuel didn't even turn around. "What is the status of the financial liquidation?"
"At 6:30 PM, following your directive, Crawford Global’s primary clearing house suspended all short-term liquidity facilities extended to Albright Enterprises," Thomas reported, tapping the screen. "By 7:15 PM, three major commercial banks executed emergency margin calls on Spencer Albright’s personal and corporate accounts. Because his personal real estate portfolio—including the Bel Air mansion—was pledged as collateral for his recent failed tech investments, foreclosure proceedings were initiated forty-five minutes ago."
Gwen looked up, her eyes icy. "And Patricia Albright? My former mother-in-law?"
Thomas allowed a cold, rare smirk to touch his lips. "Mrs. Patricia Albright was detained at the Beverly Hills Country Club roughly twenty minutes ago. It appears her exclusive membership was automatically flagged and revoked when her primary credit card defaulted on an overdue forty-thousand-dollar event bar tab. When she attempted to scream at the staff, the country club management had her forcibly removed from the dining room in front of two hundred of her social peers."
"She always did love an audience," Gwen remarked, her tone entirely devoid of pity. "Where is Spencer now?"
"He and Miss Cassandra Vance were driven back to the Bel Air residence in a municipal taxi after their rented limousine service canceled their contract mid-transit," Thomas replied. "However, they will find the estate locked. County sheriffs, along with our private auditing team, arrived at the gates fifteen minutes ago to place federal seals on the property."
Samuel turned slowly toward his chief of security. "Have the federal prosecutors issued the formal arrest warrants yet?"
"The federal grand jury was convened in an emergency session at seven this evening," Thomas explained. "With the overwhelming evidence of systemic wire fraud, offshore tax evasion, and illicit corporate fund transfers provided by Mrs. Gwen’s encrypted files, the Department of Justice has already signed the indictments. Federal marshals are currently en route to the Bel Air address."
Samuel nodded slowly, then looked at Gwen. "It is a swift end for a man who thought he was invincible. But tell me, my sweet girl... is this enough for you? Or do you want his absolute destruction?"
Gwen stood up from the edge of the couch, smoothing down her velvet dress. She looked out the panoramic window at the shining lights of the metropolis. For six years, she had lived under the suffocating weight of Spencer’s control. She had watched him belittle her intelligence, treat her like a shadow, and hoard every dollar as if it were a weapon of authority over her. She had endured his mother’s daily venom, accepting the role of the quiet, obedient wife because she foolishly believed peace could be bought with silence.
"Destruction is too quick, Dad," Gwen said softly, her voice filled with a terrifying, calm authority. "Spencer Albright spent his entire life worshipping money, status, and the illusion of power. Stripping him of his wealth is just the beginning. I want him to watch everything he ever built, every fake friendship he ever bought, crumble into dust around him while he stands entirely helpless."
She turned back to face her father. "I want the Albright name completely erased from California finance. I want every asset seized, every offshore account frozen down to the last penny, and I want him to face the full weight of the law for what he did to our family."
Samuel looked at his daughter, a spark of immense pride flashing in his aged eyes. The timid girl who had left his house six years ago out of a romantic delusion was gone. In her place stood a true Crawford—unyielding, brilliant, and ruthless when protecting her blood.
"Thomas," Samuel commanded smoothly. "Execute Phase Two."
"Understood, Mr. Crawford," Thomas replied with a sharp bow. "Phase Two is live. The press conference is scheduled for nine o'clock tomorrow morning at the Crawford Global headquarters."
"Good," Samuel said. He walked over to Gwen, placing a warm, heavy hand on her shoulder. "Tonight, you rest. My private helicopter is waiting on the roof to take you and Hazel to the Malibu estate. No press, no police, no Albrights will ever touch you there."
May you like
Gwen looked down at Hazel, who was sleeping peacefully now, her small hand still resting softly against Gwen’s palm.
"Let's go home, Dad," Gwen said softly.
