Chapter 10 - The Unraveling of Cassandra

Z

The hot afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on a noisy commercial car wash in North Hollywood. The air was thick with the smell of cheap chemical soap, hot rubber, and exhaust fumes.

Cassandra Vance stood near the end of the automated drying line, wearing a faded blue uniform shirt, rubber boots, and heavy work gloves. Her skin, once so carefully protected by expensive sunscreens and spa treatments, was dry and sunburned. Her manicured nails were entirely ruined, her hair pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail.

She held a damp microfiber towel, furiously wiping down the windshield of a metallic-black sports car that had just rolled off the conveyer belt.

"Hurry up over there!" the shift manager barked, stepping out from the small glass office while checking a digital clipboard. "We've got thirty cars in line! Move it!"

"I'm wiping it! I'm wiping it!" Cassandra snapped, wiping sweat from her forehead with her sleeve.

"Don't talk back to me, Vance," the manager warned coldly. "You're lucky I hired you with a pending federal indictment on your record. One more attitude problem and you're fired on the spot."

Cassandra swallowed her rage, bowing her head and scrubbing harder at the dark glass. She hated every second of her new life. She hated the cheap apartment she shared with two college students in the Valley. She hated the bus ride she had to take every morning at five AM. But most of all, she hated the ghost of her past that followed her everywhere she went.

Suddenly, a sleek white Maybach pulled smoothly into the detail lane, stopping right beside her station. The heavily tinted electric rear window rolled down with a soft, mechanical hum.

Cassandra stopped wiping, wiping her damp hands on her aprons as she turned her head.

Sitting in the plush interior of the luxury sedan was Gwen Crawford. She was dressed in an immaculate white silk blouse, holding a cup of iced coffee, looking out at Cassandra with a calm, silent gaze.

Cassandra froze, her face flushing with a violent mixture of extreme humiliation and burning rage. She threw her damp towel onto the concrete floor with a loud slap.

"What are you doing here?!" Cassandra screamed, her voice hoarse as she stepped toward the luxury car. "Have you come to gloat?! Are you happy now?! Look at me! Look at what you did to my life!"

Gwen didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her iced coffee, her eyes scanning Cassandra's ruined uniform and dirt-stained boots with absolute detachment.

"I didn't do this to your life, Cassandra," Gwen said smoothly, her voice cool and crystal clear over the roar of the car wash machinery. "You chose this path the moment you decided to build your happiness on another woman's suffering."

"You ruined Spencer! You put him in prison!" Cassandra yelled, tears of frustration streaming down her dusty cheeks. "You took everything from us!"

"Spencer put himself in prison when he chose to steal from his own employees," Gwen corrected gently. "And as for you... you were simply a parasite who mistook a dying host for an empire."

Cassandra stepped closer, reaching out to grab the edge of the car window, but Thomas Vance instantly stepped out from the front passenger seat, placing a massive, firm hand against her chest and pushing her back two feet.

"Keep your distance," Thomas warned coldly.

Gwen looked down at a thick legal folder sitting on her lap. She pulled out a single sheet of paper and handed it through the window to Thomas, who dropped it at Cassandra's feet.

"What is this?" Cassandra gasped, looking down at the legal document.

"That is a formal notice of civil seizure," Gwen explained. "The federal prosecutors have approved the final liquidation of all luxury items purchased for you using embezzled corporate funds. Federal marshals will arrive at your apartment this evening to collect the designer handbags, jewelry, and furs Spencer gave you over the last two years."

"No!" Cassandra shrieked, clutching her chest. "Those are mine! He gave them to me as gifts!"

"Gifts bought with stolen money belong to the victims of the theft, Cassandra," Gwen said calmly. "They will be auctioned off next week, and every single dollar raised will be placed into the Crawford Foundation for abused women and children."

Gwen signaled to the driver. The heavy electric window began to roll back up smoothly.

"Enjoy your shift, Cassandra," Gwen said softly as the window closed, blocking out Cassandra's hysterical screams as the Maybach accelerated smoothly out of the parking lot, leaving her standing alone in the cloud of hot exhaust and cheap chemical soap.
