Chapter 8 - Queen of the Board

One year after the collapse of Montgomery Capital, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was filled with five hundred of the most influential corporate titans, politicians, and philanthropists in the world. It was the annual Vance Global Gala, celebrating the firm’s record-breaking fiscal year and the launch of the Hazel Vance Foundation for Children’s Welfare.

I stood at the top of the sweeping marble staircase overlooking the ballroom, dressed in a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown tailored by Oscar de la Renta. Around my neck hung a classic diamond solitaire necklace—simple, elegant, and timeless.

Beside me stood Arthur Sterling, reviewing the evening’s itinerary on his tablet.

“The international press corps is fully assembled downstairs, Genevieve,” Arthur said quietly. “The merger between Vance Global and the European Nordic Green Fund was finalized at four o'clock today. You’ve officially doubled the firm’s enterprise value in twelve months.”

“And the Hayes Group?” I asked casually.

“Julian Hayes formally signed the restructuring agreement this afternoon,” Arthur replied with a faint smile. “Vance Global now owns a forty-percent non-voting stake in their commercial real estate portfolio. Julian sent a personal floral arrangement to your suite this morning, thanking you for your ‘visionary partnership.’”

“Julian knows which way the wind blows,” I murmured. “He’s a survivor.”

I looked out over the glittering crowd below. Twelve months ago, people in this very room had whispered about Sterling Montgomery’s brilliant expansion plans, believing I was nothing more than a quiet, background wife lucky to have captured his attention. Now, every single person in that room was waiting for me to descend the stairs and take the stage.

A light tug on my hand brought my attention down.

Hazel stood beside me, looking like a little princess in an ivory silk dress, her hair neatly curled with a matching blue ribbon. On her left wrist, the thin red bracelet sat comfortably against her skin.

“Mommy, are you ready?” she asked, smiling up at me with absolute confidence.

“I’m ready, my love,” I said, squeezing her hand. “Are you?”

“Yes!” she whispered proudly. “Grandpa told me that Vance women don't get nervous—we just take over the room.”

I laughed softly, looking across the landing to where Harrison Vance stood leaning on his cane, a proud, triumphant grin lighting up his face.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone at the center of the grand stage below. The orchestra faded into silence, and the chatter of five hundred billionaires and executives instantly ceased.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the announcer’s voice echoed across the vaulted ballroom. “Please welcome the Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Holdings—Ms. Genevieve Vance, accompanied by Miss Hazel Vance.”

A thunderous wave of applause swept through the ballroom.

I lifted my chin, straightened my shoulders, and took Hazel’s hand. Together, we walked down the grand marble staircase, stepping out of the shadows of the past and into the blinding light of our own unstoppable empire.
