Chapter 11 - The Courthouse Ambush

Z
Friday morning in Boston arrived with a biting coastal wind and grey, heavy clouds rolling off the Atlantic. Outside the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, a crowd of over fifty financial reporters, camera crews, and paparazzi had gathered on the granite plaza.
A makeshift podium with multiple network microphones had been set up at the base of the courthouse steps.
At 8:50 AM, a black Lincoln Town Car pulled up to the curb. Damian Vance stepped out, exuding the predatory swagger of a man who believed he was about to orchestrate the coup of the decade. He was fifty-two, impeccably groomed, wearing an expensive bespoke charcoal overcoat with a silk scarf. Following closely behind him was Sterling Montgomery.
Sterling looked marginally better than he had during his desperate days at the airport motel, dressed in a new suit purchased with Damian’s money, but his eyes carried the nervous, darting anxiety of a man riding on borrowed courage.
Damian walked up to the podium, adjusting the microphones as cameras flashed.
“Good morning, members of the press,” Damian began, his voice commanding and polished. “My name is Damian Vance, managing partner of Apex Horizon. Today, we are filing a landmark multi-billion-dollar securities fraud lawsuit against Vance Global Holdings and its interim chairwoman, Genevieve Vance.”
A flurry of shutters clicked as reporters shouted questions.
Sterling stepped up beside Damian, puffing out his chest. “For years, Genevieve Vance used a false identity to deceive Montgomery Capital and its public shareholders. She manipulated credit facilities at Atlantic National Bank to illegally acquire proprietary assets, resulting in the unjust destruction of Montgomery Capital and the unlawful seizure of my private family heritage.”
“We are asking the federal court to issue an immediate emergency injunction,” Damian continued, raising a thick stack of legal briefs. “Halting Vance Global’s pending European listing and freezing all disputed assets until a full federal forensic investigation can be completed.”
“Is that so, Damian?”
A clear, resonant voice cut through the cold morning air like a diamond blade.
The entire press corps whipped around in unison.
A convoy of three gleaming black Vance Global executive SUVs had pulled up silently to the plaza curb. Four security officers in matching dark overcoats stepped out, clearing a direct path through the crowd.
I stepped out of the center vehicle, wearing a tailored midnight-black wool trench coat with sharp lapels, accompanied by Arthur Sterling and two senior federal prosecutors who had recently joined our private counsel.
Cameras went wild. The flashing strobes lit up the grey morning as reporters frantically repositioned their boom mics.
“Ms. Vance! Ms. Vance! Is it true?”
I ignored the reporters, walking up the courthouse steps with calm, measured grace until I stood less than five feet from the podium. Sterling instinctively took a step back behind Damian, the old fear instantly resurfacing in his eyes.
Damian forced a condescending smirk. “Genevieve. How brave of you to show up. But a press stunt won't stop a federal complaint.”
“I’m not here for a press stunt, Damian,” I said, my voice carrying effortlessly across the silent plaza. “I’m here to deliver a courtesy notice before you embarrass yourself in front of every major network in the country.”
Damian chuckled mockingly. “You think you can intimidate me like you did this weakling Sterling? I am a Vance. I built Apex Horizon from the ground up.”
“You built Apex Horizon on eighty million dollars of borrowed high-yield credit from Trident Cayman,” Arthur Sterling stepped forward, opening a stamped legal notification. “Credit that was fully recalled at 7:30 this morning by Banque Privée de Genève following an emergency risk-compliance audit.”
Damian’s smirk froze. “What did you say?”
“Banque Privée discovered severe irregularities in your offshore collateral declarations,” Arthur continued smoothly, handing a copy directly to Damian’s lead attorney, whose face drained of color as he read the first page. “Trident Cayman has frozen all Apex Horizon operational accounts. As of twenty minutes ago, Apex Horizon is legally insolvent.”
Murmurs exploded among the journalists.
“That’s impossible!” Damian hissed, grabbing the document from his lawyer’s hands. His eyes darted frantically across the legal seals. “This... this is an illegal breach of contract!”
“It’s a standard debt covenant recall, Damian,” I said, stepping closer, my eyes locking onto his with absolute authority. “The exact same covenant Harrison Vance wrote into the family charter thirty years ago. Did you really think you could challenge Vance Global using money that ultimately flows through Vance vaults?”
Sterling looked between Damian and me, realization crashing over him like a tidal wave. “Damian... what is she talking about? What about our lawsuit?”
“There is no lawsuit, Sterling,” I said, turning my gaze to my pathetic ex-husband. “Without Apex Horizon’s capital reserves, you have no standing, no legal retainer, and no bond to file an injunction. Furthermore, the documents you stole from Montgomery Capital’s old servers have already been handed over to the Department of Justice by Victoria Hayes.”
Sterling gasped, clutching his chest. “Victoria? She... she gave you the files?”
“She chose a future,” I said coldly. “While you chose to remain a parasite clinging to whatever host was foolish enough to take you in.”
I turned to face the wall of cameras.
“Vance Global Holdings remains fully capitalized, completely transparent, and entirely focused on our upcoming European expansion. Any further attempts to defame this corporation or my family will be met with immediate, overwhelming legal force.”
I looked back at Damian and Sterling, who stood frozen on the courthouse steps like two statues of ruined ambition.

“Have a pleasant morning, gentlemen.”
I turned on my heel and walked back down the steps toward the waiting SUV, surrounded by the thunderous applause of snapping shutters, leaving the last ghosts of my past completely destroyed on the cold Boston pavement.
