Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Ambush

Z

The steps of the Manhattan Supreme Courthouse were packed with reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers. The scandal had gripped the New York real estate and financial sectors like a wildfire. An elite architect, his young mistress, an offshore fraud scheme, and a wronged wife who happened to be the daughter of one of the city's most respected estate attorneys—it was the ultimate tabloid spectacle.

I stepped out of the luxury town car wearing a tailored ivory suit, dark sunglasses, and sleek pearl earrings. Beside me, Marcus carried a thick leather briefcase packed with bank statements, forged signatures, and flight manifests.

As we mounted the granite steps, a sudden commotion erupted near the entrance.

"Eleanor! Eleanor, look at me!"

David emerged from behind a pillar, flanked by a public defender who looked overwhelmed and underpaid. David looked pathetic. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, dark purple rings under his eyes. He tried to rush toward me, but two court security guards instantly blocked his path.

"Eleanor, please! Just give me five minutes!" he begged, his voice cracking in front of dozens of flashing cameras. "Chloe ruined me! She set me up! I was coming back to you, I swear! I was going to break it off in the Maldives!"

I paused at the top of the stairs, turning around slowly. The camera shutters clicked furiously, capturing every inch of the confrontation. I took off my sunglasses, looking down at him with quiet, absolute pity.

"You didn't break it off, David," I said loudly enough for every microphone to catch. "You bought her a $15,000 diamond ring with money meant for our unborn child. You signed away my father's land while I was weeping in the guest room. Save your lies for the judge."

Before David could respond, a sleek red sports car pulled up to the curb at the foot of the stairs. Out stepped Chloe, accompanied by her high-priced crisis attorney, Arthur Vance Jr.—the black-sheep cousin of my own attorney, Marcus.

Chloe was dressed in a modest navy blue dress, trying desperately to play the naive, misled young employee. But as her eyes locked onto mine, the innocent facade slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the sharp, bitter venom underneath.

"Mrs. Hayes!" Chloe’s attorney shouted to the press gathered around. "My client is a victim of corporate coercion and emotional manipulation by David Hayes! She had no knowledge of any fraudulent transfers or illegal land deeds!"

I smiled, turning to Marcus. "Show them the evidence binder, Marcus."

Marcus stepped forward, pulling a stack of printed, notarized documents from his briefcase and presenting them directly to the assembled journalists.

"If Miss Jenkins had no knowledge," Marcus declared in a booming, clear voice that drowned out the noise of the crowd, "then perhaps she can explain why her personal signature appears on three separate offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands created two years ago? Or why her personal email address was used to track the liquidation of Mrs. Eleanor Hayes's private IVF trust?"

The press corps gasped. Cameras turned en masse toward Chloe, whose face went completely white. She looked wildly at her lawyer, who suddenly looked extremely uncomfortable holding his client's arm.

"That's... that's a lie!" Chloe stammered, backing away from the microphones. "David forged those!"

"We have IP address logs matching your personal apartment in SoHo for every single transaction, Miss Jenkins," Marcus added with a deadly grin. "And as of twenty minutes ago, the District Attorney's office has officially upgraded this from a civil dispute to an active criminal indictment for conspiracy and fraud."

Two plainclothes detectives stepped out from the court doors behind us, holding a pair of metallic handcuffs. They walked straight past David and stopped directly in front of Chloe.

"Chloe Jenkins, you are under arrest for grand larceny and criminal conspiracy," the lead officer declared, pulling her arms behind her back.

"No! Get your hands off me!" Chloe shrieked, struggling against the cold metal as reporters shoved microphones into her face. "David! Do something! You promised you'd protect me! You said she was just a stupid, barren bitch who wouldn't do anything!"

The entire crowd went dead silent at her words. The mask had completely shattered.

David covered his face with both hands, dropping to his knees on the concrete steps, sobbing uncontrollably as his mistress was led away in handcuffs.

I walked past him, stepping through the bronze doors of the courthouse without looking back. The drama outside was over, but the final accounting was just beginning.
