Chapter 3 - Uninvited Guests

The tropical air of the Maldives hit me like a hot, humid wall as I stepped off the private water taxi onto the wooden deck of The Muraka at Conrad Maldives. The turquoise water below sparkled under the midday sun, scenic and breathtaking, but my pulse was steady, driven by a icy, ruthless focus.
It had taken thirty-six hours of frantic travel, stringing together commercial flights and private transfers financed through a hidden credit line David didn't know existed. I wore an oversized pair of dark sunglasses and a sleek, black linen dress. I didn't look like a devastated wife. I looked like an executioner.
I walked down the private pier toward the world-famous undersea residence. Thanks to a generous tip to the resort manager and Marcus's swift legal injunctions, I already knew David's corporate cards had been declined two hours ago when the resort attempted to pre-authorize the $140,000 tab for the stay.
As I approached the private lounge area leading to the elevator that descended beneath the ocean, I heard raised, angry voices.
"What do you mean the card was rejected?" David’s unmistakable baritone boomed, laced with sheer panic. "Try it again! It’s an unlimited corporate Black Card!"
"I'm deeply sorry, Mr. Hayes," the resort manager replied calmly, his voice polite but firm. "The issuing bank placed a fraud freeze on all accounts associated with Hayes Architectural Group. Furthermore, we received a formal legal notice from an attorney named Marcus Vance stating that these funds are subject to an active embezzlement investigation."
I stood just behind a marble pillar, watching the drama unfold. David looked disheveled. His linen shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sweating profusely in the tropical heat. Next to him stood Chloe, wearing a skimpy silk cover-up, her arms crossed over her chest, pouting like a spoiled child.
"David!" Chloe whined, stomping her foot on the deck. "You promised me this was paid for! They're saying they're going to call the island security if we can't settle the deposit!"
"Just shut up for a second, Chloe!" David snapped, pacing back and forth, holding his cell phone to his ear. "Teresa isn't answering her phone either... what the hell is going on back home?"
"Your mother is currently locked in the guest wing with no hot water, David," I spoke up, stepping out from behind the pillar.
The silence that followed was deafening.
David froze mid-stride, his phone slipping from his fingers and clattering onto the teak deck. Chloe gasped, taking a instinctual step back, her eyes wide with terror as she recognized me.
"E-Eleanor?" David stammered, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in New York!"
"And you were supposed to be in Tokyo," I said smoothly, taking off my sunglasses and looking him dead in the eye. "Yet here we are, at a ten-thousand-dollar-a-night underwater suite, using my IVF savings to pay for your cheap little anniversary."
Chloe shifted uncomfortably, clutching her designer handbag—the exact vintage Dior bag Teresa had packed away in my house just two days ago.
My gaze drifted down to the bag, then up to the diamond ring glittering on her left hand. The fifteen-thousand-dollar ring from Fifth Avenue.
"Is that my mother's necklace around your neck, Chloe?" I asked softly, my voice dripping with lethal composure.
Chloe defensively reached for the diamond necklace, her face flushing bright red. "David gave it to me! It belongs to us now! He's leaving you, Eleanor! He doesn't want a barren, boring wife who just sits around while he builds an empire!"
"An empire?" I let out a sharp, genuine laugh that echoed across the water. "David didn't build an empire, darling. He built a house of cards using my family's money and my legal signatures."
I turned to the resort manager, pulling a black metal card from my purse along with a certified court order signed by a New York state judge.
"Manager," I said calmly. "I am Eleanor Hayes, senior partner and primary trust holder of the estate funding this reservation. As of one hour ago, an emergency injunction has seized all marital assets. I am authorizing payment for my own stay in this suite. As for these two... they are currently trespassing and using stolen financial instruments."
David’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. "Eleanor, wait! Let's talk about this! We can work this out! Chloe means nothing, it was just—"
"David!" Chloe shrieked, turning on him in disbelief. "What did you just say?!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" David yelled, clutching his head in panic. "Eleanor, please! If the board hears about the fraud freeze, I'll be ruined! I'll lose my license! Everything we built—"
"Correction," I interrupted, stepping closer to him until I was just inches from his sweating face. "Everything I built. You were just the pretty face in a tailored suit I allowed to sit at the table."
I signaled to the resort security guards standing near the pier. "Escort them off the property. They can wait for the public ferry at the main dock."
"You can't do this!" Chloe screamed as two large security officers grabbed David by the arms. "David, do something!"

David tried to pull away, his frantic eyes locked on mine. "Eleanor! Please! Don't do this to me!"
"Oh, I'm not done, David," I whispered with a cold, beautiful smile. "This is just the first installment."
