Chapter 13 - Queen's Gambit

The rain hammered against the glass windows of a high-end lounge in SoHo where Victoria Vance sat, sipping espresso from a delicate china cup. At seventy-two, she was an imposing figure, draped in tailored black cashmere, her silver hair pulled back in a flawless chignon. Across from her sat Chloe Jenkins, looking noticeably thinner, her face tense as she nervously tapped her manicured nails against the marble table.
"Are you certain the system won't trace the second node back to Helios?" Victoria asked, her voice rich with an upper-class European accent, completely devoid of warmth.
"I used the legacy backdoor David installed four years ago," Chloe whispered, glancing around the dimly lit room. "The security breach will look like an internal system glitch from Eleanor's own terminal. By the time their IT team realizes what happened, the three million will be split across four accounts in Zurich."
Victoria smiled coldly, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Good. My son Julian is rotting in a cell because that arrogant girl thought she was clever. I want Eleanor Hayes stripped of her firm, her foundation, and her pride. She took my son's legacy; I will take her freedom."
"She won't know what hit her," Chloe sneered, a flicker of her old arrogance returning to her eyes. "She thinks she won just because she put us away. She has no idea—"
"She has every idea, Chloe," a smooth, commanding voice rang out from the shadow of the velvet curtains behind them.
Chloe gasped, turning around so fast she nearly knocked her coffee cup over.
I stepped out into the light, wearing a tailored cream suit, flanked by two uniformed officers from the NYPD Financial Crimes Division and Marcus, who stood with his arms crossed, staring directly at his mother.
Victoria didn't flinch. She set her cup down with a soft click, her sharp eyes locking onto mine with supreme contempt. "Eleanor. I see my son Marcus is still running around acting as your lapdog."
"Mother," Marcus said coldly. "Stop this madness. You're going to destroy what's left of our family name."
"You destroyed this family when you betrayed your brother Julian!" Victoria snapped, her voice rising with sudden, venomous heat. "You joined forces with this... this outsider! She threw my son to the wolves!"
"Your son stole millions, committed tax fraud, and tried to ruin my family's estate, Mrs. Vance," I said smoothly, taking a seat at the empty chair at their table without waiting for an invitation. "And as for Chloe..."
I turned my gaze toward Chloe, who was trembling violently, backing her chair away from the table.
"You really never learn, do you, Chloe?" I said softly. "You thought you were using a legacy backdoor. Did you honestly believe that when I took over as CEO two years ago, I didn't completely scrub and rebuild the entire server architecture?"
Chloe's eyes widened in sheer horror. "What... what are you talking about? The administrative key worked!"
"It worked because I allowed it to work," I smiled, pulling a tablet from my leather handbag and placing it on the table. "The moment you attempted to access the foundation's escrow account last night, your IP address, device signature, and location were logged in real-time by the FBI Cyber Division. The three million dollars never left the bank. It was routed into a federal trap account."
Victoria’s calm demeanor cracked for the first time. Her hand twitched slightly against her saucer. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" I tapped the screen on my tablet, displaying a live document from the Southern District of New York. "This is a federal warrant for the immediate seizure of all assets associated with Helios Capital for wire fraud, money laundering, and witness tampering. And since you personally signed as the primary investor, Mrs. Vance, your personal holdings in France and New York have been frozen as of ten minutes ago."
The two police officers stepped forward, pulling out metallic handcuffs.
"Chloe Jenkins, you are under arrest for violation of parole and attempted grand larceny," the lead officer declared, pulling Chloe out of her chair.
"No! Please! Mrs. Vance, do something!" Chloe screamed, breaking into hysterical tears as the officers slapped the cuffs onto her wrists. "You said I wouldn't go back to prison! You promised!"
"Silence, you foolish girl!" Victoria hissed, her face pale as marble as she stood up, trying to maintain her dignity.
I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and looked Victoria dead in the eye.

"You wanted to take my freedom, Mrs. Vance," I whispered, my voice carrying a quiet, terrifying authority that filled the room. "But instead, you just guaranteed that Julian won't be the only member of your family spending the next decade behind bars."
Victoria stared at me, her mouth opening slightly, but no words came out as the second officer stepped up to place her under arrest. I turned and walked out of the lounge into the crisp spring air, leaving the remains of the Vance empire crumbling behind me.
