Chapter 9 - The UnravelingZ

By 6:00 AM the following morning, the news of the raid on the Lake Union woods had broken across national networks.
I sat wrapped in a warm blanket in Victoria Sterling’s office, sipping hot tea. Beside me, Leo and Toby were fast asleep on a leather couch, safe and sound.
Victoria stepped into the room, holding a tablet displaying a live news broadcast.
"It's happening, Clara," she said quietly, her voice tinged with immense satisfaction.
I looked at the screen. The banner at the bottom read: BREAKING NEWS: VANCE WEALTH MANAGEMENT HEADQUARTERS RAIDED BY FBI.
The camera showed dozens of federal agents carrying boxes of seized documents out of the glass sky-rise in downtown Seattle.
"The USB drive and the ledger your father kept contained structural account ledgers that matched federal tax filings word-for-word," Victoria explained. "The Department of Justice filed emergency warrants at three in the morning. Richard Vance was arrested at his home two hours ago."
"And Elliot?" I asked softly.
Victoria pulled up a secondary news article, featuring a mugshot of Elliot Vance. He looked disheveled, hollow-eyed, and completely broken.
"He was apprehended three miles from the cabin by state troopers," Victoria said. "He’s being held without bail on charges of felony extortion, conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and attempted robbery. His father is facing federal racketeering, money laundering, and grand larceny charges. The Vance family assets have been completely frozen by the federal government."
I stared at Elliot’s mugshot. The man who had demanded I throw away my brothers to preserve his comfortable life was now facing years, potentially decades, behind bars.
"What about the lawsuit against me?" I asked.
"Dismissed," Victoria said, a triumphant smile appearing on her face. "In fact, because your father’s original indemnity trust was illegally obstructed by Richard Vance, the court has officially finalized the transfer. The entire two point five million dollars is now fully released, cleared, and permanently deposited into your private sole-trust account."
I lowered my tea cup, looking over at my sleeping brothers.
The threat was gone. The men who had tried to intimidate us, intimidate my father, and tear our family apart were going to pay for every single crime they had committed.

"You fought like a lion, Clara," Victoria said gently, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Your father would be immensely proud of you."
A single tear slipped down my cheek, but for the first time in weeks, it wasn't a tear of fear or grief. It was a tear of peace.
