Zero nine

Chapter 8 - The HuntZ

Branches clawed at my face and arms as I tore through the dark, rain-soaked woods. The rain was coming down in sheets, turning the forest floor into a treacherous slide of mud and rotting leaves. Behind me, the beams of two heavy-duty flashlights cut through the darkness, swaying wildly as my pursuers gave chase.

"Clara!" a voice bellowed through the trees. It was Elliot.

My heart seized. Elliot was here himself.

"Give it up, Clara!" his voice echoed, laced with a terrifying mix of desperation and rage. "You can't run out there! You don't know what you're dealing with!"

I didn't answer. I kept running, my boots slipping, my lungs burning like fire. The backpack carrying my father’s evidence felt heavy, but I held it against my chest like a shield. If they caught me here, in the middle of nowhere, there would be no witnesses, no police, and no escape.

I tripped over a exposed tree root, crashing heavily onto the muddy ground. Pain shot through my right knee. I let out a gasping cry, quickly clamping my hand over my mouth.

Just twenty feet away, a flashlight beam swept across the trees above my head.

"She went this way!" one of the hired men shouted.

"Find her!" Elliot roared, his voice closer now. "If she gets those files to the authorities, we are all going to jail! Do you understand me? Find her!"

I crawled on my hands and knees behind a massive, fallen cedar trunk, pressing my back against the wet bark. Rain washed down my face, mixing with tears of adrenaline and pain.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. The screen was cracked, but it still lit up. One bar of service.

I frantically typed a text to Victoria: Lake Union cabin. Elliot and two men are hunting me in the woods. I have the files. Call the police.

I hit send. The loading wheel spun endlessly. Sending... Sending...

Footsteps crunched on the wet leaves just on the other side of the cedar log.

"Check behind the logs," a man muttered.

I squeezed my eyes shut, holding my breath, praying silently.

Ping.

The text sent. But the sudden chime of my phone echoed crisply through the quiet forest.

"Over there!"

A hand reached over the log, grabbing my jacket collar and dragging me backward into the mud. I screamed, kicking wildly. My boot hit the man squarely in the shin, sending him stumbling back, but Elliot emerged from the shadows, his eyes wide and unhinged, stepping over the log to block my path.

"Got you," Elliot breathed heavily, wiping rain from his face. He looked manic, completely unrecognizable from the man I had once planned to marry.

"Elliot, stop this!" I cried out, scrambling backward until my back hit a rock face. "This is insane! You're committing felony assault!"

"You did this to us!" Elliot yelled, stepping closer, his fists clenched. "My family was respected! My father built an empire! And you destroyed it in three days because you couldn't just put those stupid kids away!"

"Your father built an empire on stolen money and fraud!" I screamed back, staring him dead in the eyes. "Your whole life is a lie, Elliot! And my dad knew it!"

Elliot grabbed my backpack, trying to wrench it from my grip. "Give me the bag, Clara!"

"No!" I fought back with everything I had, scratching at his hands, pulling his arms.

"Give it to me!" he shrieked, yanking the straps with all his strength.

Suddenly, red and blue lights began flashing through the dense treeline in the distance. The sharp, piercing wail of police sirens tore through the night sky, accompanied by the loud barking of police K-9 units.

The two hired men panicked immediately. "Police! We gotta go!"

"Shut up!" Elliot yelled, still pulling at the bag.

"Elliot, the cops are here! Move!" one of the men shouted, turning and sprinting into the darkness.

Elliot hesitated, looking down at me, then at the flashing lights approaching through the trees. The realization hit him all at once: it was over.

"You ruined everything," he whispered, his face twisted in pure hatred.

He let go of the bag, turned around, and took off running into the dark woods just as flashlight beams burst through the treeline, held by armed police officers.

"Police! Stay where you are! Hands up!"

I collapsed back into the mud, clutching my father's backpack to my chest, letting out a sob of absolute relief as the officers surrounded me.
