Chapter 10 - A New BeginningZ

Six months later.
The summer sun beamed down brightly on the lush backyard of our Bellevue home. The smell of fresh-cut grass filled the air, mixed with the sound of laughter echoing from the wooden playset.
Leo and Toby were swinging happily, their laughter ringing out like music. They looked healthier, happier, their cheeks rosy and their eyes free of the dark shadows that had haunted them after our parents' death.
I sat on the back patio, a sketchbook resting on my lap. I had officially re-enrolled in university to finish my degree in architecture—a dream I had put on hold years ago.
A light knock on the patio fence made me look up.
Victoria Sterling stood there, dressed in casual clothes for once, holding a bottle of sparkling apple cider and a small gift box.
"Am I interrupting family time?" she asked with a warm smile.
"Never," I said, standing up to welcome her. "Come on in."
She walked over, placing the gift on the patio table before sitting down. "I stopped by to give you the final legal updates. The trial wrapped up this morning."
I sat across from her, feeling completely calm. "What happened?"
"Richard Vance pled guilty to federal money laundering and wire fraud. He was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison," Victoria reported. "Elliot accepted a plea bargain for his role in the extortion and assault. He’s going away for four years."
I took a deep breath, letting the finality of her words settle into my soul. "It's really over."
"It's really over, Clara," Victoria affirmed. "They will never touch your family again."
She pushed the small gift box across the table toward me. "This arrived in my mail yesterday from the state archivist. I thought you should have it."
I carefully unwrapped the box and pulled out a framed, old photograph.
It was a photo taken twenty years ago. My father was sitting on a porch, holding a infant version of me in his arms, smiling warmly into the camera. On the back, written in his familiar, neat handwriting, were the words:
“To my brave little girl. Everything I build, and everything I protect, is for you. Stand strong always.”
Tears filled my eyes, but a joyful smile broke across my face.
I looked up at the sunny sky, then over at Leo and Toby, who came running toward the patio, screaming my name as they begged for ice cream.
"Clara! Clara! Look how high I jumped!" Toby yelled, throwing his arms around my waist.
"I saw it, buddy," I laughed, pulling them both into a tight, warm hug.

I had lost my parents, and I had stared down the darkest betrayal from the man I thought I loved. But standing here today, holding my brothers in my arms under the clear blue sky, I knew one thing for certain:
We hadn't just survived the storm. We had won.
