Chapter 8 - Victoria's Poisoned Chalice

The high-security visitation room at the Westchester County Detention Facility was cold, sterile, and reeked of industrial bleach. Victoria Sterling sat on the other side of the reinforced glass partition, wearing a pristine beige prison uniform that could not hide the growing terror in her eyes.
When Sarah sat down on the metal stool and picked up the telephone receiver, Victoria leaned forward eagerly, her manicured fingers trembling against the glass.
"Sarah! Thank God you came," Victoria whispered urgently into the phone. "You have to tell Harrison to drop the accessory charges! Pendelton said there's a technical hold on my bail because of some administrative error. You're my daughter, Sarah. I raised you! I gave you everything!"
Sarah held the receiver to her ear in silence, looking at the woman who had stood beside her children's birthday cake and lit the candles with a smile.
"Why the boys, Victoria?" Sarah asked quietly. Her voice was calm, devoid of any anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "Julian was drowning in gambling debt, fine. But Lucas and Ethan were your grandchildren. Your own blood."
Victoria flinched, her eyes darting nervously to the armed guard standing near the door. "You don't understand the financial pressure we were under! The Sterling family name was on the verge of total bankruptcy! My offshore investments collapsed, and the Apex Syndicate was threatening to take the family estate, the trust, everything! If the trust transferred to Julian as the sole surviving guardian, we could have cleared the debt and saved the empire!"
"By putting twelve-year-old boys in the ground alive?" Sarah leaned closer to the glass. "You ordered a single coffin because you didn't want an autopsy. You wanted them to suffocate in the dark so no one would find the puncture marks from the neurotoxin."
"It was Julian's plan!" Victoria sobbed, losing all her aristocratic composure as tears streaked her powdered face. "He said the toxin was painless! He promised they wouldn't feel anything! He told me we would dig the coffin up in secret after the funeral and move you to Europe with fake identities once the trust payout cleared! He lied to me, Sarah!"
Sarah reached into her bag and pressed the high-definition audio recorder against the glass. The small red light was blinking steadily, having captured every single word of Victoria’s confession.
Victoria’s eyes widened in horror as she realized what she had just done. "Sarah... what did you do?"
"Julian didn't plan to save you, Mother," Sarah said, pulling a folded piece of paper from her pocket and pressing it flat against the glass partition.
It was a copy of the secondary contract recovered from Julian’s floor safe—the clause naming Julian Vance as the sole beneficiary of the Apex payout, with an explicit instruction to eliminate Victoria Sterling via staged heart failure within thirty days of Sarah’s death.
Victoria stared at the document, her mouth open in a soundless scream of betrayal. The very man she had conspired with to murder her daughter and grandchildren had planned her execution from the very beginning.
"He played you for a fool," Sarah said, her voice cold as ice. "And now, your confession is on federal record. There is no bail. There is no high-society redemption. You are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a six-by-eight concrete cell, remembering that you traded your family for a man who saw you as nothing more than an expendable liability."

Sarah stood up, hanging the receiver on the wall hook with a final, echoing click.
As Victoria pounded hysterically against the glass, screaming Sarah’s name until her voice broke, Sarah turned her back and walked out of the facility into the blinding morning sun.
