Chapter 14 - The Ledger of Ghosts

The interrogation room was a sterile, windowless box in the heart of Zurich. Thorne sat slumped in a metal chair, his composure stripped away by the news that his entire operation had been dismantled in less than an hour.
Sarah sat across from him, the decrypted ledger displayed on a tablet between them. It was a roadmap of corruption, detailing not just the Apex Syndicate, but the high-ranking officials, bankers, and politicians who had funded the original hit on the Vance family.
"You think this stops with me?" Thorne rasped, his voice cracked. "I’m a mid-level manager. If you release this, you aren't just taking down a syndicate. You’re taking down half the government."
"Then I suppose we’re going to need a much bigger courtroom," Sarah said, tapping the tablet to send the file to an encrypted server accessible by the International Criminal Court.
"You’ll never survive the fallout," Thorne warned. "They have eyes everywhere. Even in your own security team."
Sarah paused. A cold shiver ran down her spine. "What are you talking about?"
"You think you hired the best security in London?" Thorne chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. "You hired the men who allowed the hit on you in the first place. You’re surrounded, Sarah."
Sarah’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up and walked out of the room, her mind racing. She reached for her earpiece to contact Miller, but the channel was dead.
She hurried toward the waiting area where Miller was supposed to be stationed, but the room was empty. On the table lay his earpiece, shattered, and a single black envelope.
Sarah picked up the envelope. Inside was a photograph of the Alpine villa, with a red "X" marked across the boys' bedroom window.
"No," she whispered, the color draining from her face.
She turned and ran, ignoring the protest of the guards, racing toward the exit. She didn't need to look at the ledger anymore. She knew exactly who was behind the "glitches" in her security. The syndicate hadn't been defeated; they had been waiting for her to move from her fortress so they could strike at the only thing she had left.
She pulled her car out of the parking garage, tires screeching against the pavement, and dialed the emergency number for her security team's private line.
"This is Sarah Vance," she yelled into the phone, her voice trembling. "Get the boys out of the villa. Now! Get them to the extraction point!"

Silence answered her. Then, a chilling voice she recognized from the penthouse attack crackled through the line.
"It’s too late, Sarah. We’re already inside."
