Chapter 10 - The Desperate Flight

Z

Three weeks after the sentencing, the Vance estate had finally found a semblance of peace. The media trucks had cleared away, the legal proceedings were finalized, and the probate court had officially transferred all Sterling-Vance assets and trust funds entirely into Sarah’s sole ownership.

It was a crisp autumn evening. Sarah was upstairs in the boys' bedroom, packing suitcases for a long-planned recovery trip to a private coastal retreat in Maine.

Downstairs, the front gates buzzed. Detective Miller, now promoted to Captain of the Major Crimes Division, was scheduled to drop off the final protective closure paperwork.

Sarah walked down the curved grand staircase, smiling as she opened the heavy oak front door. "Marcus, you're early—"

The words died in her throat.

Standing on the porch was not Captain Miller.

It was Julian Vance.

He wore a dark mechanic’s jumpsuit, his face gaunt and covered in fresh abrasions. In his right hand, he held a heavy steel crowbar; in his left, a stolen police-issue revolver.

"Did you really think ADX Florence could hold me before the federal transport bus even cleared the county line, Sarah?" Julian hissed, kicking the door wide open and shoving Sarah violently backward into the foyer.

Sarah hit the marble floor, her head spinning. A prison transport ambush. The Apex Syndicate had staged a violent breakout on the highway, freeing Julian so he could secure the offshore recovery codes before fleeing the country on a private charter waiting at the regional airfield.

"Where are the boys?" Julian snarled, locking the deadbolt behind him and racking the slide of the revolver. "And where is the encrypted ledger key?"

"They're not here, Julian," Sarah lied, scrambling backward toward the base of the stairs, trying to draw his attention away from the upper floor where Lucas and Ethan were packing. "I sent them to Maine yesterday. The codes are in my safe at the bank."

"You're lying!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild with the manic desperation of a cornered animal. "I saw their bikes in the driveway! Give me the ledger key, or I will paint this entire foyer with your blood before I fly to Costa Rica!"

From the top of the stairs, a small voice broke the tension. "Mom?!"

Ethan and Lucas stood at the railing, their eyes wide with terror as they looked down at their escaped father.

"Lucas! Ethan! Run! Lock the panic room!" Sarah screamed.

Julian spun toward the stairs, raising his weapon. "Stay right there, you little brats!"

Before Julian could take a single step up the stairs, Sarah seized the heavy brass umbrella stand beside the coat rack and swung it with all her strength against Julian’s kneecap.

A sickening crack echoed through the foyer. Julian screamed in agony, collapsing to one knee as his gun fired wildly into the ceiling, showering plaster across the grand hall.

Sarah didn't retreat. She tackled Julian to the floor, pinning his gun arm beneath her knee and driving her fingers into his eyes with savage, relentless fury. "You will never touch my children again!"

Julian bucked violently, throwing Sarah off and raising the crowbar to strike her down. But before the metal could descend, the heavy glass panel of the front door shattered inward in a shower of deadly shards.

Captain Marcus Miller and a tactical strike team breached the foyer, their assault rifles raised.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" Miller roared.

Julian turned, raising the crowbar in a blind, suicidal rage.

The crack of a single sniper shot from the garden perimeter rang through the shattered doorway. The bullet struck Julian’s shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him face-down onto the blood-streaked marble floor.

Tactical officers swarmed over him, pinning his limbs, kicking the crowbar away, and zip-tying his wrists in unbreakable steel cuffs.

Miller rushed forward, helping Sarah to her feet. "Sarah! Are you okay?!"

Sarah ignored the blood on her hands. She turned toward the stairs and opened her arms. Lucas and Ethan sprinted down the steps, throwing themselves into their mother's embrace, sobbing into her coat as she held them tighter than she ever had in her life.
