Zero nine

Chapter 9 - Cold Hard NumbersZ

The heat from the burning freighter outside was rising rapidly, cracking the outer windows of the control room. The air was thick with the suffocating smell of scorched diesel fuel and burning circuit boards. The floorboards vibrated beneath our feet as secondary explosions ripped through the hull of The Cynthia.

"You think you have me trapped in a binary dilemma, Thorne," I said, my voice cutting through the mechanical hum of the cooling fans and the roaring fire outside. "Shoot you and lose the money, or let you walk and lose the company."

Thorne smiled, reaching slowly toward his side pocket for his satellite ignition device. "Precisely. The math is simple."

"You forgot one fundamental rule of forensic accounting, Dominic," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "The money doesn't matter if the ledger itself is structurally corrupted."

Thorne’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. "What did you do?"

"When Maya initiated the mirror wipe of our corporate mainframe twenty minutes ago, she didn't just back up our files," I explained, stepping sideways to keep the line of sight between him and the terminal clear. "She injected a poison-pill payload into the Vance Logistics outgoing routing protocol. A self-replicating cryptographic worm designed by Eleanor three weeks before she died."

Thorne’s eyes widened with sudden, genuine shock. He spun around to look at the monitor.

The progress bar had suddenly turned from bright green to flashing, violent crimson:

ERROR: HASH COLLISION DETECTED

SOURCE CORRUPTED BY OVERWRITE ALGORITHM: ELEANOR_VANCE_SEC_AUTH_KEY

TRANSACTION REVERSED. ALL FUNDS RETURNED TO ESCROW LOCKDOWN.

OFFSHORE ROUTING DESTINATIONS EXPOSED TO FEDERAL TRADE REPOSITORY.

"No!" Thorne roared, lunging toward the keyboard, his calm billionaire composure shattering into frantic, desperate rage. He hammered at the keys, but the terminal screen turned entirely blue, displaying a single line of text:

> ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT PERMANENTLY QUARANTINED BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES TREASURY.

"Eleanor didn't just keep a paper diary, Dominic," I said, closing the distance between us. "She created an automated dead-man's switch. The moment you attempted to siphon more than fifty million dollars through Vance Logistics without her biometric clearance, the entire network would route the private keys directly to the Department of Justice’s cyber-crimes unit."

"You bitch!" Thorne snarled, his hand whipping toward the heavy pistol lying on the console table.

I didn't wait for him to raise the barrel.

I fired twice.

The first hollow-point round struck the console table inches from his hand, showering his wrist in sharp plastic and metal fragments. The second bullet slammed cleanly through his right knee, shattering the joint instantly.

Thorne let out a guttural howl of pain, collapsing heavily onto the floor, clutching his leg as blood soaked his tailored trousers. His pistol skidded harmlessly across the slick linoleum floor, stopping against my boot.

I kicked the weapon out through the broken window into the black, churning waters of the harbor below.

"You're done, Thorne," I said, standing over him, looking down at the man who had ordered the murder of my mother and the destruction of my life. "Your private blockchain is compromised. Your offshore routing nodes are in federal hands. And every politician, judge, and dock commissioner on your payroll is about to receive an unannounced visit from the FBI."

The door to the control room burst open. Detective Ortiz, her face soot-stained and her jacket torn, stepped inside with two federal marshals in full tactical body armor.

"Federal agents! Do not move!" Ortiz shouted, sweeping the room before lowering her weapon as she saw Thorne bleeding on the floor.

Ortiz looked at me, then at the blue terminal screen, and finally at Thorne. A slow, exhausted breath escaped her lips.

"We intercepted his escape helicopter on the western landing pad," Ortiz reported. "The U.S. Attorney just signed the federal racketeering and treason warrants. It’s over, Julian."

Dominic Thorne glared at me from the floor, his face twisted in agonized hatred. "You think you've saved anything? You destroyed your father, you destroyed your company, and you burned your own legacy to the ground!"

May you like

I looked at him with the same icy detachment I had felt when Arthur was handcuffed in my boardroom.

"My mother was my legacy, Thorne," I replied softly. "Everything else was just numbers on a spreadsheet."
