Chapter 14 - The Dead Woman's VoiceZ

The silence in the titanium vault was suffocating. I gripped the edge of the steel console so tightly that my knuckles turned bone white, the sharp corners biting into my palms, grounding me against the terrifying reality of the woman speaking to me from the screen.
"You're dead," I whispered, my voice trembling with a violent collision of raw grief, betrayal, and boiling rage. "I saw the burned-out kitchen. I saw the coroner’s van. I spent weeks choking on smoke that I thought killed you!"
Eleanor looked down at her hands, where an ornate diamond ring caught the daylight. "The body in the kitchen belonged to a terminal cancer patient from a private clinic in Munich who was paid two million euros to ensure her family would never starve. Her dental records were swapped at the state examiner's office forty-eight hours before the fire. Arthur believed he was locking me inside. He was so arrogant, so utterly predictable. I let him think he had orchestrated my murder so that he would walk straight into the DOJ trap I had spent three years preparing for him."
"You used your own husband as an execution bait," I snarled, stepping closer to the camera mounted on the terminal. "You let him burn our home down! You let him try to murder me!"
"No, Julian!" Eleanor’s voice sharpened, the authoritative tone of the family matriarch cutting through the digital audio feed with chilling precision. "You were never supposed to be in that house that night! You were supposed to be in New York on an audit engagement! When Arthur moved the schedule up by six hours, I was already at the airstrip in private transit. By the time I realized you were inside, the fire was already lit. I spent three days in a safe house in Geneva waiting to hear if my only daughter survived the flames."
"And when you found out I lived?" I demanded, tears of pure fury finally burning at the corners of my eyes. "You left me in that hospital bed! You let Arthur come to my bedside with lilies and legal contracts! You let me face Dominic Thorne's assassins alone on a burning dock in Chicago!"
"Because you needed to be forged, Julian!" Eleanor proclaimed, her eyes flashing with fierce, unapologetic ambition. "I built this empire from nothing. In the nineteen-nineties, women weren't allowed inside the boardroom of Bankhaus Helvetia unless they were carrying a tray of coffee! I had to align with monsters like Dominic Thorne to build the largest private capital reserve on this planet! But Thorne became greedy. He wanted to turn our financial clearinghouse into a weapon of war and narcotics."
"So you decided to play God and burn the board down," I spat.
"I decided to clean house," Eleanor corrected smoothly, leaning forward into her camera. "Arthur was weak and corrupted. Thorne was a rabid dog that needed to be put down. I orchestrated Arthur's downfall, manipulated Thorne into exposing his private blockchain network, and used you—my brilliant, incorruptible daughter—as the spotless public hero to legitimize the purge."
"I was not your pawn, Eleanor!"
"You were my successor, Julian!" Eleanor’s voice boomed with terrifying pride. "Look at what you accomplished in three months! You dismantled Thorne's domestic network, you purged the corrupt board of Vance Enterprises, and you secured federal compliance status from the United States Treasury! You did what I could never do: you made the Vance name completely untouchable in the eyes of the law."
Eleanor gestured to the terminal screen beside me.
"The four hundred and twenty million euros sitting in Bankhaus Helvetia are completely clean, laundered through thirty layers of sovereign debt swaps that no court on Earth can overturn. It belongs to us, Julian. To you and me. Christian Vogel is waiting outside that door to hand you the private bearer keys to the entire European trust. All you have to do is close this audit, certify Bankhaus Helvetia as compliant, and join me in Geneva."
I stared at the woman on the screen—the mother who had taught me to read ledger books, who had bandaged my childhood scrapes, and who had cold-bloodedly engineered the slaughter of her husband and the near-incineration of her child to consolidate half a billion dollars in offshore wealth.
"And if I refuse?" I asked softly, my voice dropping to a flat, dangerous whisper.

Eleanor's warm smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, aristocratic detachment.
"Then Christian Vogel will ensure that you and Maya never leave this subterranean vault alive. A tragic electrical fire caused by a lithium battery malfunction in your forensic gear. A poetic end for an auditor who simply looked too deep into the numbers."
