Chapter 4 - The Underground SyndicateZ

I didn't hesitate. I didn't warn her.
I squeezed the trigger.
The gunshot in the enclosed subterranean concrete vault was deafening, a catastrophic boom that violently rattled the steel lockers and punched a shockwave through my eardrums. The 9mm bullet ripped cleanly through the leather fabric of Chloe’s right shoulder, spinning her backward against the safety deposit boxes with a sickening metallic clang.
A small, chrome-plated revolver slipped from her shattered grip, clattering across the floor and sliding beneath a row of storage units.
Chloe dropped to her knees, clutching her shoulder as dark crimson welled through her manicured fingers. She gasped for air, her arrogant smirk disintegrating into a mask of pure agony and shock.
"You... you shot me..." she wheezed, her voice shaking violently.
"I told you," I said, stepping forward until the warm barrel of my Glock was pressed directly against the center of her forehead, "my spreadsheets don't just balance accounts. They balance debts."
With my left hand, I reached past her into Eleanor’s pried-open lockbox and pulled out a thick, black-leather-bound ledger alongside an encrypted military-grade flash drive. I slipped both into my inner coat pocket without taking my eyes off her.
"Who ordered the hit on Arthur?" I demanded, pressing the barrel harder against her skull until she winced. "Who runs the Thorne Syndicate?"
"Go to hell, Julian," Chloe spat, blood bubbling at the corner of her lip. "If you kill me, they won't just come for you. They'll burn down every building with the Vance name on it. They'll hunt every analyst, every friend, every cop you've ever spoken to."
"They're already hunting me, Chloe. That makes you useless as a hostage and invaluable as an example." I clicked the hammer back. "Give me a name."
Terror finally cracked through her icy façade. "Dominic Thorne! He operates out of the Carlyle Shipping Yard on the South Pier! The entire board of Vance Logistics is in his pocket. The city’s port authority commissioner, the municipal judges—Dominic owns all of them! Arthur was just a pawn to move the offshore accounts through the shipping lines!"
"And what was Eleanor's ledger supposed to expose?"
"Everything," Chloe choked out, tears of pain tracking through her foundation. "Names of elected officials, the offshore holding companies, the serial numbers of the untraceable shipping containers. Your mother recorded every single transaction for eighteen months before Arthur caught on. Dominic gave Arthur seventy-two hours to get that ledger back. When Arthur couldn't find it in the corporate office, he tried to burn Eleanor inside the house to destroy her personal archives."
A cold, calculating clarity washed over me. Arthur hadn’t just been greedy; he had been utterly cornered by a criminal syndicate he was too stupid to navigate. And my mother had paid the ultimate price for his fatal incompetence.
Behind me, the sound of heavy boots echoed down the concrete corridor.
"Julian! Hold your fire!"
Detective Ortiz burst through the vault entrance, two heavily armed state tactical officers flanking her with assault rifles raised.
"She’s secured," I said flatly, slowly lowering my firearm and setting it on top of a steel table. "Chloe Vance is Dominic Thorne’s primary field operative within Vance Enterprises. She was attempting to destroy federal evidence."
Ortiz moved instantly, kicking Chloe’s weapon farther away while the tactical officers forced Chloe face-down onto the floor, securing her wrists in heavy plastic flex-cuffs.
"You're bleeding through your bandages, Julian," Ortiz noted, pointing at the dark stain blooming across the side of my white silk blouse where my fractured ribs had strained against the recoil.
"It's not fatal," I replied, pressing my hand against my side. "Arthur Vance is dead, but the man who pulled the strings is sitting at the South Pier. Dominic Thorne."
Ortiz grimaced, kneeling to check Chloe's wound before signaling the paramedics outside. "Dominic Thorne is untouchable, Julian. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has spent six years trying to get an indictment against him. Every witness disappears, every audit trail goes cold, and every judge who looks at his warrants suddenly recuses themselves due to 'conflicts of interest.' You can't touch him with a routine subpoena."
May you like
I tapped the black leather ledger and the encrypted drive secured in my inside pocket.
"I'm not serving a subpoena, Detective," I replied, my eyes hardening into flint. "I am going to bankrupt him, dismantle his offshore infrastructure, and leave him with nothing to pay his mercenaries. Let’s see how long a king stays on his throne when his gold turns into federal asset seizures."
