Chapter 9 - THE HOSPITAL SIEGEZ

The rain had returned with a vengeance, beating against the windshield of the black sedan Kelly was forcing me to drive. Kelly sat in the passenger seat, her revolver buried deep in the pocket of her coat, pointed directly at my right thigh.

"Drive faster, Clara," Kelly commanded, her eyes darting constantly between the side mirrors and the road ahead. "If I see a single police cruiser trailing us, I press the detonator. It’s that simple."

"They're already evacuating the hospital, Kelly," I said through gritted teeth, my hands shaking on the wheel as I navigated the slick highway toward Greenwich Memorial Hospital. "You can't win this. The FBI has the perimeter locked down."

"The FBI doesn't know which ward my contact is in," Kelly shot back, a chilling smirk on her lips. "And by the time they figure it out, we’ll already have extracted the hospital database key and boarded a private charter out of Westchester Airport."

In my ear, the micro-earpiece was still live, though I couldn't speak to the agents without Kelly hearing me.

"Clara, if you can hear us, do not enter the main lobby," Agent Chen’s voice came through, strained and urgent over the static. "Bomb squad is sweeping the basement. We have tactical snipers positioned on the parking garage roof. Lead her to the side entrance near the radiology department—we have a kill box set up."

I kept my face completely expressionless, staring straight ahead at the grey highway. I couldn't lead her to the radiology department; if Kelly suspected a setup for a single second, she would hit that detonator button without hesitating.

Ten minutes later, we pulled into the rear parking lot of Greenwich Memorial Hospital. The main entrance was a chaotic swarm of flashing red lights, ambulances, and panicked nurses evacuating patients in wheelchairs, but the rear service entrance remained dark and deserted.

"Out," Kelly ordered, opening her door.

We stepped out into the pouring rain. Kelly grabbed my coat collar, shoving me toward the heavy steel service doors.

Using a stolen keycard she had acquired during Jasper’s initial hospital visit, she swiped us inside. The interior of the hospital was eerily quiet, the emergency alarms muted to prevent mass panic, but the red emergency strobe lights pulsed rhythmically along the white corridor walls.

"Where is the main server room for the pediatric ward?" Kelly demanded, shoving me forward down the hallway.

"It's on the third floor," I lied smoothly. "Near the administrative offices."

I knew the server room was actually in the basement—right where her associate was supposed to be stationed with the explosives. I was deliberately leading her into the heart of the building where I knew the SWAT team was converging.

We rode the service elevator up to the third floor. The doors slid open to an empty, quiet hallway lined with framed artwork of smiling children and colorful wall murals.

"Which door?" Kelly asked, her eyes scanning the corridor suspiciously.

"End of the hall. On the left," I said, taking slow, deliberate steps.

As we reached the middle of the hallway, a shadow stepped out from the intersecting corridor ahead.

It wasn't an FBI agent. It wasn't a doctor.

It was Jasper.

He was wearing a blue hospital scrub uniform, his hands covered in plastic surgical gloves, his face pale, gaunt, and sweat-stained. He had escaped from county custody during his medical transfer transfer processing earlier that morning!

Kelly froze, drawing her revolver out of her coat pocket and aiming it directly at Jasper's chest. "Jasper?! How the hell did you get out?"

"You didn't think I had a backup plan, Kelly?" Jasper spat, his voice unhinged, his eyes wide with a manic energy. He was holding a heavy glass IV pole like a club. "You tried to cut me out! You tried to take the entire forty-two million for yourself!"

"Put the gun down, both of you!" I screamed, stepping between them in the narrow hallway. "The FBI is in the building! The bomb squad is in the basement! It’s over!"

"Shut up, Clara!" Jasper roared, turning his rage on me. "You gave them the Ledger! You ruined eight years of planning because you couldn't keep your mouth shut to a damn social worker!"

"You put our son in the middle of a mob hit, Jasper!" I screamed back, tears burning my eyes. "You locked him on a porch to break his leg! You made him lie for you!"

"I did it for our future!" Jasper yelled, stepping closer. "That money was going to buy us a life where no one could touch us!"

"You're insane," Kelly sneered, her finger tightening on the trigger of her revolver. "And you're useless now, Jasper. I don't need you to extract the database key. I have his medical record number."

Kelly shifted her thumb to the red button on the remote detonator in her left hand. "Goodbye, Jasper."

"NO!" I shrieked.

Before Kelly could pull the trigger, I threw my entire body weight into her, tackling her against the drywall!

The revolver discharged with a deafening BANG, the bullet shattering a glass picture frame on the wall above us. The remote detonator flew from Kelly's hand, skidding across the linoleum floor!

Jasper lunged forward, not to tackle Kelly, but to grab the detonator off the floor!

Kelly kicked me off her, scrambling on her hands and knees toward Jasper. They collided in a flurry of desperate, violent blows, fighting over the small black device like wild animals over a carcass.

"Give it to me!" Kelly shrieked, raking her nails across Jasper’s face.

"It's mine! It's all mine!" Jasper screamed back, slamming his fist into her jaw.

I dragged myself up from the floor, my shoulder bruised and aching, and saw the revolver laying three feet away near the elevator doors.

I picked up the gun.

My hands were shaking violently. My breath came in ragged, terrified gasps. I raised the heavy steel weapon, aiming it at the two people who had turned my life, my home, and my son’s innocence into a battleground of greed and violence.

"STOP!" I roared, my voice echoing down the corridor like thunder.

Both of them froze. Jasper was pinning Kelly to the floor, his hand gripping the detonator. They both turned to look at me, staring down the barrel of the revolver.

"Clara..." Jasper gasped, his eyes wide with shock. "Clara, baby... put the gun down. We can take the money together. We can leave the country. Just give me the gun..."

"Don't listen to him, Clara," Kelly choked out, blood trickling from her lip. "He’ll kill you the second he gets that code."

"Shut up! Both of you!" I wept, my arms rigid, the front sight of the gun fixed squarely on Jasper's chest. "You spent years lying to me. You spent weeks making my son feel like he was a liar. You destroyed his safety. You made him carry your sins."

"Clara, please..." Jasper begged, a tear cutting through the dirt on his cheek. "I’m Howard’s father..."

"A father protects his son," I said, my voice dropping into an icy, absolute steel. "You used him as a vault."

Heavy, synchronized boots thundered up the stairwell at the end of the hall. Heavy doors slammed open.

"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP TO THE GROUND NOW!"

A dozen tactical officers burst into the hallway, shields raised, laser sights painting Jasper, Kelly, and me in bright red dots.

Jasper looked at the officers, then looked at the detonator in his hand. A dark, terrifying smile crossed his face. "If I can't have it... nobody does."

He raised his thumb to press the red button.

BANG!

I pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck Jasper cleanly in the shoulder, knocking him backward off Kelly. The detonator slipped from his grip, rolling harmlessly into the corner of the hallway.

Tactical officers swarmed the corridor like a tidal wave. Kelly was slammed face-down into the floor and handcuffed in seconds. Three agents pinned Jasper to the ground, applying a pressure dressing to his shoulder wound while securing his wrists in heavy steel cuffs.

An agent stepped up to me, gently taking the revolver from my trembling fingers.

Agent Chen walked through the line of tactical officers, stepping over the shattered glass on the floor. She looked at Jasper, bleeding on the tile, then looked at Kelly, and finally turned her eyes to me.

"The bomb squad just secured the basement," Agent Chen said quietly. "The secondary threat is neutralized. The hospital is safe."

I fell back against the wall, sliding down until my knees hit the cold floor, and wept.
