Chapter 8 - THE FOUNTAIN OF LIESZ

The morning air inside the Stamford Town Center mall was thick with the artificial scent of roasted coffee, polished granite, and floor wax. It was 8:45 AM. The mall was quiet, with only early morning walkers and mall staff opening shop doors.
I walked slowly along the polished tile floor of the second-level balcony, my heels clicking softly. Beneath my silk blouse, taped securely to my ribs, was a wire transmitter no larger than a postage stamp. A micro-earpiece was nestled deep inside my right ear canal, humming with the faint static of the FBI tactical channel.
"Check, check. Audio is clean, Clara," Agent Chen’s calm, sterile voice echoed in my ear from a surveillance van parked three blocks away. "Tactical Team Alpha is positioned on the upper mezzanine near the department store. Team Bravo is covering the street exits. You are completely covered."
I didn't answer. I couldn't. I kept my hand inside my coat pocket, clutching a dummy USB drive that the FBI had prepared for me.
Down on the main level, at the center of the atrium, was a massive circular stone fountain. The water splashed rhythmically, creating a dark, hypnotic sound that did little to soothe my racing pulse.
At 8:58 AM, a woman stepped out from behind a high-end clothing boutique near the fountain.
She wore a tan trench coat, dark sunglasses, and her blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail. She was striking, athletic, and possessed an air of total composure.
It was Kelly Vance.
She walked over to the edge of the fountain, pulling a paper coffee cup from a nearby cafe, and stood facing the water, her back partially turned to the main walkways.
"Target acquired," a voice crackled in my earpiece—Tactical Lead. "Clara, move down the escalator now."
My knees felt weak, but I forced my feet to move. I rode the glass escalator down to the lower level, my eyes locked on Kelly’s back. Every step felt like walking toward an executioner's block.
When my shoes hit the tile floor at the bottom, I walked directly toward the fountain.
"Kelly," I said, stopping three feet behind her.
Kelly didn't jump. She took a slow sip of her coffee, turned around slowly, and lowered her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose. Her blue eyes were cold, assessing, and entirely unbothered.
"Clara," Kelly said, her voice smooth and pitched low. "You look remarkably put-together for a woman whose house was shot up last night."
"Where is the key?" I asked, skipping any pretense. "You said you’d hand it over."
Kelly let out a soft, bitter laugh, taking off her sunglasses completely. "You really are as naive as Jasper said you were. Do you actually think I’m handing forty-two million dollars over to the FBI so they can put me in a witness protection program in Idaho?"
My blood ran cold. "Clara, step back!" Chen’s voice snapped in my ear. "She’s stalling!"
"You told the FBI you wanted a deal," I whispered, holding my ground.
"I told the FBI what they needed to hear to get you out into the open," Kelly said, leaning in closer. "The FBI has Jasper’s half of the key from your attic. But they don't know how the encryption works. The two halves don't just combine, Clara. They require a biometrically locked master key that Jasper hid inside Howard's medical records at the hospital."
I stared at her, horrified. "What?!"
"Jasper didn't just take Howard to the hospital because he broke his leg," Kelly sneaked a sinister smile. "He took him there because he needed a secure, federal-vault-level bio-data storage network to hide the primary wallet key under Howard’s pediatric patient file! Why do you think Jasper was in Howard's hospital room at 3:00 AM? He wasn't just telling the boy to lie to you! He was installing a digital payload into the hospital’s pediatric database!"
My mind reeled as the pieces clicked together with horrifying clarity. The hospital footage... Jasper leaning over Howard's bed... the nurse seeing Howard flinch... Jasper wasn't just manipulating our son. He was using our injured child’s medical file as a digital bank vault!
"Teams Alpha and Bravo, move in! Move in now!" Chen screamed through my earpiece.
"They're coming for you, Kelly," I said, pointing toward the upper balconies as tactical officers in black armor burst out of the service stairwells, weapons drawn.
Kelly didn't panic. She reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a small black remote detonator with a glowing red LED light.
"Tell them to stop, Clara," Kelly said, her voice dropping into a deadly, monotone whisper. "Or I hit this button, and the oxygen tanks in the pediatric ward where Howard was treated three days ago go off. My associate is standing in the hospital basement right now."
I froze, the air ripped completely out of my lungs. "You... you monsters... he's a child!"
"He’s collateral," Kelly hissed. "Now, tell your FBI friends to back off, get into that elevator with me, and take me to the hospital database. Or a hundred children burn today."
The entire atrium fell into a terrifying standoff. Federal agents lined the balconies above, red laser sights painting Kelly’s chest and head, but no one dared fire.
Through my earpiece, I could hear pure panic erupting at FBI command. "Do not fire! Repeat, do not fire! Bomb threat confirmed at Greenwich Memorial!"

Kelly grabbed my arm with an iron grip, pressing the cold steel of a hidden snub-nosed revolver into my ribs.
"Walk, Clara," Kelly whispered into my ear. "You wanted to save your son? Today, you prove how far you’ll go."
