Chapter 4 - SHADOWS OF DECEPTIONZ

The rain had stopped by the time I pulled into Eleanor Vance’s private office building, but the overcast sky hung over Manhattan like a heavy lead shroud. My hands were stiff on the steering wheel. The anonymous text message burned on my phone screen like a digital pipe bomb.
I rushed up the stairs and burst into Eleanor’s inner office without knocking. Eleanor looked up from her computer, her brows furrowing in surprise, while her paralegal hastily backed out of the room.
"Clara, what happened?" Eleanor asked, dropping her pen.
I didn't speak. I simply marched over to her desk and slammed my phone down in front of her, displaying the text message and the photo of Kelly holding the corporate files.
Eleanor picked up the device, her keen eyes scanning the text once, twice, three times. Her expression didn't show panic; instead, it hardened into something icy and ruthless.
"Where did this text come from?" Eleanor asked.
"A burner number," I said, my voice trembling as I paced the Persian rug in front of her desk. "I called it back immediately after leaving Dr. Thorne's office, but it went straight to a dead signal. Eleanor, Dr. Thorne is filing a mandatory CPS report today. Howard told him everything—Jasper locked him outside on a second-story deck in ninety-degree heat so he could fight with Kelly about corporate fraud! That’s how he fell! And now someone is blackmailing me to pull our court motions!"
Eleanor stood up, walking around her desk to grab a physical file folder. "Take a breath, Clara. Think logically. Who benefits from sending you this text?"
"Jasper!" I cried out. "He wants me to back off!"
"Does he?" Eleanor countered, raising an eyebrow. "Look at the text again. The sender is threatening to expose Jasper to federal prosecutors. If Jasper sent this, he’s threatening to blow up his own life just to stop a custody hearing. That doesn't make sense. Jasper is a narcissist; narcissists protect their own comfort above all else."
I stopped pacing, the breath catching in my throat. "Then... Kelly?"
"Bingo," Eleanor said flatly. "Kelly isn't just Jasper's secret assistant or mistress. If she’s sitting on offshore financial documents, she’s either his co-conspirator or his blackmailer. She was at that house because Jasper was trying to buy her silence—or because she was digging for dirt on him. When Howard got hurt, it brought hospital staff, social workers, and police scrutiny right into the middle of their illegal operation. You aren't just in the middle of a messy divorce anymore, Clara. You’ve stumbled into a corporate crime ring."
The room seemed to spin. "What do I do? If Jasper goes to prison for federal financial fraud, Howard’s college fund, his health insurance, our house... everything is tied to Jasper’s income. Jasper’s attorney said they’ll strip me of everything!"
"Richard Sterling is bluffing, and Kelly is playing a high-stakes game of chicken," Eleanor said, her voice like steel. "We do not withdraw the motion. In fact, we escalate."
"Escalate?" I echoed, terrified. "If I push him, what if Jasper flees? What if Kelly releases the documents?"
"If Jasper flees, he loses custody forever and goes to federal prison," Eleanor stated coldly. "If Kelly releases the documents, Jasper’s assets will be frozen, but we will file an emergency petition to liquidate his secured personal assets to fund Howard’s care before the federal government can touch them. But to do that, we need to know who Kelly really is."
Eleanor reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a business card, pushing it across the mahogany surface toward me. The card was stark black with gold lettering: Detective David Miller (Ret.) - Private Investigative Services.
"David is an ex-NYPD detective who specializes in corporate intelligence," Eleanor said. "I called him twenty minutes ago after Dr. Thorne’s office gave me a heads-up about the CPS report. David is already digging into Jasper’s firm. I want you to go see him."
An hour later, I was sitting in a dimly lit, narrow office in Lower Manhattan. Detective David Miller was a stocky man in his mid-fifties with a thick grey beard, a scarred knuckles, and eyes that looked like they had seen every dark corner of human nature.
He didn't waste time with pleasantries. He threw a manila folder onto the coffee table between us.
"Your ex-husband is in deep, Mrs. Miller," David said, his voice gravelly. "Jasper isn't just an associate partner at Hayes & Croft. He’s been operating an unrecorded shell company registered in the Cayman Islands called 'Aegis Capital Management.' For the past eighteen months, he’s been siphoning offshore client funds into this shell company."
I felt a cold sweat break out across the back of my neck. "And Kelly?"
David pulled a high-resolution photograph out of the folder and slid it toward me. It was a mugshot.
"Her real name is Kelly Vance—no relation to your lawyer, obviously. She’s a former forensic accountant who served three years in federal prison for wire fraud in 2019," David explained, leaning back in his chair. "She was hired six months ago by Hayes & Croft’s internal compliance team to conduct a quiet audit. She caught Jasper red-handed."
I covered my mouth with my hand. "So she wasn't his mistress?"
"Oh, she was that too," David smirked grimly. "Jasper tried to sleep his way out of an audit. When that failed, he tried to pay her off. That’s what was happening at his house the day your son broke his leg. Jasper brought her there to negotiate a bribe. They got into a massive fight over the price of her silence. Jasper locked your kid on the porch so he could intimidate her in private. When the kid fell, the whole deal went off the rails."
"And the black-mail text I received today?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"That came from Kelly," David confirmed. "She’s realized that Jasper is out of control and that CPS is involved. She knows the federal authorities are going to get pulled into this the moment family court reviews the evidence. She’s trying to scare you into dropping the legal pressure so she can extract her payout from Jasper and vanish before the FBI steps in."
"I can't drop it," I said, a sudden, cold fury washing over the panic that had consumed me for days. "He locked my son outside like an animal. He made him lie while he lay in a hospital bed with a broken bone."
"Then you have to be ready for the fallout, Mrs. Miller," David warned, his dark eyes staring intensely into mine. "When a cornered animal realizes there's no way out, it doesn't run. It attacks. Jasper is going to court on Thursday morning facing the loss of his child, his career, and his freedom. He has nothing left to lose."
My phone chimed in my purse.
It wasn't a text message this time. It was a notification from my home security app.
ALERT: Motion detected at Rear Patio Door - 2:14 PM.
My heart stopped. My mother was at my house right now, watching Howard while he rested his leg on the couch.
I whipped out my phone, opening the live camera feed.

On the screen, through the misty glass of my back patio, I saw a tall figure dressed in a black raincoat standing on my back porch. He was leaning down, trying the handle of the sliding glass door.
It was Jasper. And he was holding a heavy iron crowbar.
